Case report of an unusual and catastrophic presentation of coral reef aorta.

BACKGROUND: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare condition characterized by atherosclerosis and overt calcification of the aorta leading to severe luminal stenosis of the vessel. Most patients present with hypertension and intermittent claudication at the time of diagnosis. Risk factors associated with this condition are essentially the same as those associated with atherosclerosis. However, no unique condition seems to predispose an individual to develop CRA. CASE SUMMARY: We describe the case of a patient known for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated with long-term systemic corticosteroids who pr

Emergency Endovascular Treatment of Coral Reef Aorta with an Unconventional Technique.

Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare condition featured by rock-hard calcifications that grow into the lumen of the thoracoabdominal aorta. Patients suffering from CRA may present severe downstream ischemic and embolic events involving the viscera and the lower limbs. In these patients, open surgical repair is the first choice of treatment. We present a case of a 70-year-old woman with acute presentation of bilateral limb ischemia and abdominal pain. An angio-computed tomography (CT) scan showed the subocclusion of the distal thoracic aorta due to a severe calcified coarctation with intraluminal t

Repeated exposure to noise increases tolerance in a coral reef fish.

Some anthropogenic noise is now considered pollution, with evidence building that noise from human activities such as transportation, construction and exploration can impact behaviour and physiology in a broad range of taxa. However, relatively little research has considered the effects of repeated or chronic noise; extended exposures may result in habituation or sensitisation, and thus changes in response. We conducted a field-based experiment at Moorea Island to investigate how repeated exposure to playback of motorboat noise affected a coral reef fish (Dascyllus trimaculatus). We found that

Finding the best estimates of metabolic rates in a coral reef fish.

Metabolic rates of aquatic organisms are estimated from measurements of oxygen consumption rates ( ) through swimming and resting respirometry. These distinct approaches are increasingly used in ecophysiology and conservation physiology studies; however, few studies have tested whether they yield comparable results. We examined whether two fundamental measures, standard metabolic rate (SMR) and maximum metabolic rate (MMR), vary based on the method employed. Ten bridled monocle bream (Scolopsis bilineata) were exercised using (1) a critical swimming speed (Ucrit) protocol, (2) a 15 min exhaust

Retroperitoneal trapdoor endarterectomy for paravisceral "coral-reef" aortic plaque.

A 67-year-old woman presented to the emergency room with progressive claudication, chest pain, and flash-pulmonary edema. Her past medical history was significant for poorly controlled hypertension requiring multiple antihypertensive medications, renal insufficiency, and tobacco abuse. Diagnostic evaluation revealed an extensive exophytic plaque localized to the paravisceral aorta resulting in high-grade stenoses of the proximal aorta as well as the celiac, superior mesenteric, and left renal arteries. She underwent surgical revascularization through a retroperitoneal aortic exposure and trapd

Disease incidence is related to bleaching extent in reef-building corals.

Recent outbreaks of coral bleaching and disease have contributed to substantial declines in the abundance of reef-building coral. Significant attention has been paid to both phenomena in order to determine their effect on reef trajectories. Although each is positively correlated with high temperatures, few studies have explored the potential links between bleaching and disease. A longitudinal study of corals in the Florida Keys was therefore conducted during the 2005 Caribbean bleaching event to quantify bleaching extent and disease incidence in corals, and to determine whether they were relat

Tsunami survey expedition: preliminary investigation of Maldivian coral reefs two weeks after the event.

On December 26th 2004, a earthquake west of Sumatra generated a devastating tsunami. Hundreds of thousands of people fell victim. Economic losses were greatest in those countries dependant on tourism. The impact in the Maldives on persons and things was modest. Immediately following the event and notwithstanding the lack of scientific data, the mass media gave catastrophic reports on the state of coral reefs in the area. This paper reports on the first survey on coral reefs in the Maldives after the Tsunami. Ocean walls, passes, inner reefs, and shoals in the North and South Malé atolls, were …

Bottom-up control of coral reef sponges: for better and for worse.

Controversy over whether coral reef sponges are controlled bottom-up or top-down has distracted attention from more nuanced questions about what circumstances promote either bottom-up or top-down control, and how coral reef ecosystems are affected by what controls their sponges. Experiments now suggest that predators do not control coral reef sponges in their home habitat, shifting attention to effects of variations in sponge food supply. Comparing growth and survival of eleven of the most common and ubiquitous Caribbean coral reef sponge species on reefs in Belize and Panama differing in wate

Ultraviolet B radiation impairs coral reef fish development.

Loss of structural habitat complexity associated with habitat degradation in marine systems may expose early life stages of fishes to harsh environmental conditions. Specifically, loss of coral cover means less suitable refuge is available for some reef fish species to lay their eggs, exposing them to pervasive stressors such as ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Here, using laboratory experiments, we exposed embryos of the clownfish Amphiprion ocellaris for 2 h daily to two UVR levels reflective of their depth at settlement; high UVR (280 µW m-2), reflective of shallow depths, and low UVR (80 µW m-

Progressive changes in coral reef communities with increasing ocean acidification.

Ocean acidification from increasing atmospheric CO2 is progressively affecting seawater chemistry, but predicting ongoing and near-future consequences for marine ecosystems is challenging without empirical field data. Here we quantify tropical coral reef benthic communities at 37 stations with varying exposure to submarine volcanic CO2 seeping, and determine the aragonite saturation state (ΩAr) where significant changes occur in situ. With declining ΩAr, reef communities displayed progressive retractions of most reef-building taxa and a proliferation in the biomass and cover of non-calcareous

Intravascular Lithotripsy-Enhanced Treatment of Paravisceral Coral Reef Aorta.

Background: Coral reef aorta (CRA) is a rare and therapeutically challenging condition characterized by heavily calcified paravisceral aortic stenosis, leading to severe clinical manifestations. Open surgery is associated with substantial perioperative morbidity and mortality, while standard endovascular approaches often face technical limitations. This multicentre study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and safety of intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) combined with aortic and/or reno-visceral vessel (RVV) stenting for the treatment of paravisceral CRA. Patients and methods: Patients with paravis

Challenging Endovascular Treatment of Coral Reef Aorta and a Literature Review.

Coral reef aorta is a rare type of atherosclerotic disease that causes severe calcification in the abdominal aorta. We present a case of coral reef aorta with hemodynamically significant symptomatic aortic stenosis causing intermittent claudication and bilateral cyanosis of the toes. Despite the challenging anatomy for endovascular treatment, the patient underwent successful transfemoral endovascular stent-graft placement. The endovascular intervention with stents is a viable alternative method and, in many cases, constitutes the first choice for the treatment of coral reef aorta.

Fishing degrades size structure of coral reef fish communities.

Fishing pressure on coral reef ecosystems has been frequently linked to reductions of large fishes and reef fish biomass. Associated impacts on overall community structure are, however, less clear. In size-structured aquatic ecosystems, fishing impacts are commonly quantified using size spectra, which describe the distribution of individual body sizes within a community. We examined the size spectra and biomass of coral reef fish communities at 38 US-affiliated Pacific islands that ranged in human presence from near pristine to human population centers. Size spectra 'steepened' steadily with i

Congestive heart failure due to coral reef thoracoabdominal aorta.

Acquired coarctation due to coral reefs is a rare and unique entity characterized by extensively calcified thrombus of the entire aorta. There are few reports of coral reef aorta resulting in severely congestive heart failure in the literature. We describe a 60-year-old female with acute heart failure. Computed tomography (CT)-scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed that the cause of the heart failure was cardiac after-load mismatch due to serious stenosis of the aorta. In order to prevent cardio-respiratory failure, an axillofemoral bypass was performed to release the cardiac after…

Coral reef aorta: a long-term study of 21 patients.

Coral reef aorta is a rare calcifying disease of the juxtarenal and suprarenal aorta. We report here our surgical experience in treating 21 patients, with a mean follow-up of 4 years and 7 months. Both genders were equally affected. Ten male (48%) and 11 female (52%) patients with a mean age of 54.6 years (range 42-76 years) underwent surgery. The main symptoms were limb claudication (n = 11, 52%), renovascular stenosis (n = 9, 43%) with concurrent renovascular hypertension (n = 5, 24%), and angina abdominalis (n = 7, 33%). Most patients had multiorgan vascular disease such as iliofemoral arte

Biogeochemical cycling and fate of PAHs in coral reef ecosystem: Associations with coral holobiont microbial functional profiles.

Current understanding of the distribution, bioaccumulation, and trophic transfer patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coral reef ecosystem remains limited, particularly regarding their potential associations with coral-associated microbial communities. This study investigated PAH occurrence, bioaccumulation, and apparent trophic distribution patterns across ecological compartments within the coral reef ecosystem of the Weizhou Island, northern South China Sea (SCS). PAHs were detected in multiple environmental and biological compartments, with zooplankton and coral tissue exh

Overfishing and nutrient pollution interact with temperature to disrupt coral reefs down to microbial scales.

Losses of corals worldwide emphasize the need to understand what drives reef decline. Stressors such as overfishing and nutrient pollution may reduce resilience of coral reefs by increasing coral-algal competition and reducing coral recruitment, growth and survivorship. Such effects may themselves develop via several mechanisms, including disruption of coral microbiomes. Here we report the results of a 3-year field experiment simulating overfishing and nutrient pollution. These stressors increase turf and macroalgal cover, destabilizing microbiomes, elevating putative pathogen loads, increasin…

High microbial diversity, functional redundancy, and prophage enrichment support the success of the yellow pencil coral, Madracis mirabilis, in Curaçao's coral reefs.

UNLABELLED: Coral reefs have undergone extensive coral loss and shifts in community composition worldwide. Despite this, some coral species appear naturally more resistant, such as Madracis mirabilis (herein Madracis). Madracis has emerged as the dominant hard coral in Curaçao, comprising 26% of coral cover in reefs that declined by 78% between 1973 and 2015. Although life history traits and competitive mechanisms contribute to Madracis's success, these factors alone may not fully explain it, as other species with similar traits have not shown comparable success. Here, we investigated the pote…
