Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are well-recognised as an extended disease spectrum. This study hypoth … amination (ACE) scale, behavioural function on the motor neuron disease behavior scale (MiND-B) and cortical excitability using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) were documented. Cortical resting motor threshold (RMT), lower threshold indicating hyperexcitability, was lower in ALS-FTD (50.2 ± 6.9) compared to controls (64.3 ± 12.6, p < 0.005), while ALS-Cog (63.3 …

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with migraine exhibit heightened sensitivity to visual input that continues beyond their migraine episodes. However, … -related potentials (ERPs) with greater chromaticity separation, which is consistent with increased cortical excitability. However, individuals with migraine rated gratings as being disproportionately uncomfortable and exhibited greater effects of chromaticity separation in ERP amplitude across occipital and parietal electrodes. Ratings of discomfort and ERPs were smal …

AIM: The aim of this work was to analyse how writer's cramp patients coordinate each element of the proximal to distal upper arm muscle chain during voluntary movement.
METHODS: Using transcranial magnetic stimulation, we have assessed motor cortex excitability properties in patients by recording motor-evoked potentials and silent periods in both the extensor carpi radialis (ECR) and the first dorsal interosseus muscles (FDI), activated either in isolation, or in conjunction with voluntary medial deltoid (MD) co-activation during performance of precise tasks. Ten dystonic patients and ten hea

Synesthesia is an unusual condition characterized by the over-binding of two or more features and the concomitant automatic and conscious experience of atypical, ancillary images or perceptions. Previous research suggests that synesthetes display enhanced modality-specific perceptual processing, but it remains unclear whether enhanced processing contributes to conscious awareness of color photisms. In three experiments, we investigated whether grapheme-color synesthesia is characterized by enhanced cortical excitability in primary visual cortex and the role played by this hyperexcitability in …

Short-term deprivation of sensory input by ischaemic nerve block (INB) leads to functional reorganization in the deafferented motor cortex. Here, we show that INB also elicits functional changes in homotopic regions of the cortex contralateral to the deafferented one. We measured motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitudes elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in small hand and biceps brachii muscles before, during and after INB of the right hand. INB increased excitability of the cortical representation of (i) the intact hand and (ii) body parts proximal to the deafferented hand (up

Body ownership, the sense that the body belongs to oneself, can be altered by inducing body manipulations in Virtual Reality, such as by increasing the visual discontinuity between the avatar's hand and body. Body representation manipulations can also influence motor cortex excitability. We hypothesized that the degree of body continuity between one's body and the observed virtual body would affect ownership feelings and impact motor cortex excitability during action observation. Participants observed virtual hand movements from a first-person perspective with the virtual hand presented with d

BACKGROUND: Tics can be voluntarily inhibited. However, the neurophysiology of voluntary tic inhibition remains underexplored. The objective of this study was to explore state-dependent effects of voluntary tic inhibition on M1 excitability.
METHODS: Neurophysiological assessments (single motor-evoked potentials, corticospinal recruitment curves, short-interval intracortical inhibition, H-reflex) were performed in 14 adults with Tourette syndrome during voluntary tic inhibition and free ticcing. Regressions between behavioral performance and neurophysiological measures were also performed.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been reported to be a promising technique for consciousness improvement for patients with disorders of consciousness (DOC). However, there has been no direct electrophysiological evidence to demonstrate the efficacy of tDCS on patients with DOC. Therefore, we aim to measure the cortical excitability changes induced by tDCS in patients with DOC, to find electrophysiological evidence supporting the therapeutic efficacy of tDCS on patients with DOC. In this study, we enrolled sixteen patients with DOC, including nine vegetative state (VS) and sev…

There is great interest about the therapeutic potentialities of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (tVNS) applied to neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the mechanisms of action of tVNS and its impact on cortical excitability are unclear. To this regard, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can be useful because it is able of evaluating non-invasively excitatory and inhibitory circuitry of the human cortex. Aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of tVNS on cerebral cortex excitability in healthy volunteers by means of TMS. Ten healthy subjects participated in this rando…

We studied interictal cortical excitability with magnetic stimulation in controls, in patients with migraine with aura, and in patients with familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM), in which ictal hemiparesis occurs. Amplitudes (p < 0.05) and amplitude ratios (p < 0.01) revealed heightened excitability in migraine with aura when compared to controls. In patients with FHM, mean thresholds were higher (p < 0.001) and conduction times longer (p < 0.01) than in controls. In FHM, amplitudes were lower on the ictally paretic side of the body than on the other (p < 0.05). Patients with FHM may have increa…

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) and strength exercise (SE) induce corticospinal plasticity in exercised and non-exercised muscles. While HIIT's systemic neuromodulatory effects are well-established, SE's comparable remote responses remain unclear. This study investigated changes in corticospinal, intracortical, and spinal excitability, as well as motor performance, in non-exercised flexor carpi radialis following single-session HIIT and plantar flexion SE. Using a randomised crossover design, eighteen participants completed: (1) 20-minute high-intensity interval cycling, (2) high-inten
