Supratentorial neurofibroma unassociated with cranial nerves.

A rare case of a solitary neurofibroma occurring in a 42-year old female is described. It was attached to the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus. The literature of previously described intracranial nerve sheath tumours not obviously associated with cranial nerves is briefly reviewed.

Acupuncture points of the cranial nerves.

An attempt is made to name most of the acupuncture points in the face and forehead region using anatomic nomenclature known to western medicine. All acupuncture points in the face and forehead region are located along terminal or cutaneous branches of the trigeminal nerve and the motor points formed between muscular branches of the facial nerve to the muscles of facial expression. It is believed such nomenclatures will be comprehensible to basic medical scientists and clinical practitioners who have knowledge of anatomical sciences.

Monitoring surgery around the cranial nerves.

Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) of cranial nerve (CN) function is an essential component in multimodality monitoring of surgical procedures where CNs are at risk for injury. In most cases, IONM consists of localizing and mapping CNs and their pathways, and monitoring of CN motor function during surgery. However, CN VIII, which has no motor function, and is at risk for injury in many surgical procedures, can be easily and accurately monitored using brainstem auditory evoked potentials. For motor CNs, the literature is clear that function can be safely and adequately performed

Cranial Pair II: The Optic Nerves.

The optic nerves (ONs), one of the 12 pairs of cranial nerves (Pair II), together with the olfactory and the cochlear nerves, are devoted to transmit sensory inputs. In particular, ONs convey visual information from the retina to the brain. In mammals, the ONs are bilateral structures that extend from the optic disc to the optic chiasm containing glial cells and retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) axons. RGCs are the only retinal neurons able to collect visual information and transmit it to the visual centers in the brain for its processing and integration with the rest of sensory inputs. During emb…

Disorders of the lower cranial nerves.

Lesions of the lower cranial nerves (LCN) are due to numerous causes, which need to be differentiated to optimize management and outcome. This review aims at summarizing and discussing diseases affecting LCN. Review of publications dealing with disorders of the LCN in humans. Affection of multiple LCN is much more frequent than the affection of a single LCN. LCN may be affected solely or together with more proximal cranial nerves, with central nervous system disease, or with nonneurological disorders. LCN lesions have to be suspected if there are typical symptoms or signs attributable to a LCN…

Denervation atrophy of motor cranial nerves.

Muscles undergoing denervation demonstrate a variety of imaging appearances in the various stages. It is incumbent on the radiologist to be aware of these changes so as not to interpret these muscles as harboring a tumor or being involved by an inflammatory process. Knowledge of cranial nerve anatomy and the muscles they innervate enables identification of denervation patterns that could implicate more than one nerve and directs the search for the causative lesion.

Arterial vascularization of the cranial nerves.

We discuss the arterial supply of the cranial nerves from their exit out of the brain stem to their exit from the skull base. Four distinct groups can be differentiated from an embryologic and phylogenetic standpoint. Understanding the arterial supply to the cranial nerves and the potential anastomoses is paramount in the endovascular treatment of dural AV shunts and highly vascularized tumors of the skull base to avoid neurologic deficits.

Imaging of the lower cranial nerves.

This article discusses the normal anatomy and pathologic entities that involve the lower cranial nerves. Normal anatomy is described and correlated with line diagrams and MR images. Distinct pathologic processes that involve the individual nerves along their various components are discussed. The imaging characteristics of these lesions are provided. Knowledge of the nuclear origins, the normal course of the cranial nerves, their func-tional components, and the imaging characteristics of pathologic lesions involving the nerves are important in any evaluation of cranial neuropathy.

Rehabilitation of the lower cranial nerves.

Brain stem lesions frequently cause dysfunction of the lower cranial nerves. Even with successful treatment, dysfunction may remain. Various methods for rehabilitating the patient with persistent lower cranial nerve dysfunction are presented.

Gadolinium enhancement of cranial nerves: Implications for interstitial fluid drainage from brainstem into cranial nerves in humans.

Drainage of interstitial fluid and solutes from the brainstem has not been well studied. To map one drainage pathway in the human brainstem, we took advantage of the focal blood-brain barrier disruption occurring in a multiple sclerosis brainstem lesion, coupled with intravenous injection of gadolinium, which simulates an intraparenchymal injection of gadolinium tracer within the restricted confines of this small brain region. Using high-resolution MRI, we show how it is possible for interstitial fluid to drain into the adjacent trigeminal and oculomotor nerves, in keeping with a pathway of co
