Pulmonary cryptococcosis.

Cryptococcus neoformans is a ubiquitous soil fungus that rarely causes pneumonia in normal hosts but is a common cause of opportunistic infe … re common in immunocompromised patients. Establishing the diagnosis can be difficult, but pulmonary cryptococcosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients in the proper clinical setting and with compatible radiographic findings.

[Pulmonary cryptococcosis].

The authors present the clinical history of a 61 year old woman who was treated in the Metropolitan Hospital Complex Arnulfo Arias Madrid of the Social Security. The patient had experienced weight loss, chills and pain in the left chest for a period of one month. The chest X-ray showed an irregular oval shaped pulmonary infiltrate, 5 x 5 cm, in the upper one third of the left lung field. Fiberoptic bronchoscopy revealed an endobronchial lesion in the superior division of the left upper lobe bronchus. Transbronchial biopsy and bronchial brushings showed Crytpcoccus neoformans. Clinical evaluati

Pulmonary cryptococcosis.

Observation of an unusual pulmonary distribution of cryptococci in a patient at autopsy prompted a review of 36 patients with pulmonary cryptococcosis listed in the autopsy files of The Johns Hopkins Hospital. The patients ranged in age from 2 to 89 years (mean, 49 years), 19 were female, and 18 were black. All but three patients had underlying debilitating diseases, and 23 patients had received steroids and/or chemotherapy. In 25 patients (69 per cent) cryptococcosis was a major factor contributing to death, through pulmonary disease in ten, systemic involvement in seven, and central nervous …

Skeletal cryptococcosis.

We reviewed the published reports of skeletal cryptococcosis and added three cases to the fifty-six in the literature. Eight of the patients in the reported cases probably did not have primary skeletal cryptococcosis. The potential toxicity of antifungal drugs in current use and the apparent effectiveness of surgical treatment for patients who only have a single focus of infection in bone, without involvement of other tissues, should be noted. The association of cryptococcosis with other diseases and the difficulty in differentiating purely skeletal involvement from more extensive disease are …

Pediatric Cryptococcosis.

BACKGROUND: Seroprevalence studies have shown that 70% of children are exposed to Cryptococcus , the most common cause of meningitis in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), but reported pediatric disease prevalence is much lower than in adults. METHODS: PubMed and Ovid Global Health databases were searched with the terms "cryptococcosis," "cryptococcal meningitis," " Cryptococcus neoformans " or " Cryptococcus gattii ." All studies reporting pediatric specific data in the English language from 1980 up until December 2022 were included. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-eight publi…

Pulmonary Cryptococcosis.

Pulmonary cryptococcosis describes an invasive lung mycosis caused by Cryptococcus neoformans or Cryptococcus gattii complex. It is often a high-consequence disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent populations, and may be misdiagnosed as pulmonary malignancy, leading to a delay in therapy. Epidemiology follows that of cryptococcal meningoencephalitis, with C. gattii infection more common in certain geographic regions. Diagnostic tools include histopathology, microscopy and culture, and the detection of cryptococcal polysaccharide antigen or Cryptococcus-derived nucleic acids. All …

Cutaneous Cryptococcosis.

Cutaneous cryptococcosis is classified either as primary or secondary based on the route of infection. The disease can also be classified either as localized cutaneous cryptococcosis or cutaneous manifestations of disseminated cryptococcosis. However, from a physician's point of view, whether lesions are localized to the skin or are disseminated/systemic is more important than the route of infection. The Clinical Practice Guidelines for Diagnosis and Treatment of Cryptococcosis, which was established in 2019 by the Japanese Society for Medical Mycology, adopted the latter classification. Local…
