[Biochemical and endocrinological analysis of breast cyst fluid].

The gross cystic disease (breast cyst < 3 mm in diameter) is common benign disease of the breast. The relations GCD with breast cancer remain the fundamental problem. Although the cysts itself only exceptionaly degenerates into cancer, the presents of macrocystic disease multiplies by 3 to 4 the risk of cancer. A lot of interesting examinations were performed on cyst fluids aspirated from patients to identify women with benign breast disease and particular risk for breast cancer. There are two groups of breast cysts: these lined by apocrine epithelium and those lined by flattened epithelium. I…

Calcium oxalate crystals in benign breast cyst fluid.

We have recently observed a strongly birefringent material of varying shapes and sizes in a benign breast cyst fluid specimen from a 52-yr-old woman with suspicious mammographic microcalcifications. The finding of calcium oxalate crystals in the breast cyst fluid should be regarded as a recognition of a particular type of calcification, easily overlooked with the conventional light microscopy. To date, we are unaware of any cytologic reports of this type of calcification in the breast.

Echinococcus granulosus cyst fluid enhances epithelial-mesenchymal transition.

Cystic echinococcosis is characterized by fluid-filled hydatid cysts in the liver and lungs. The cysts are surrounded by a host fibrous layer (the pericyst) which acts to isolate the parasite from surrounding tissues. Previous studies in liver cysts have indicated that the parasite may be a stimulating fibrosis. The aim of this study was to investigate whether hydatid cyst fluid (HCF) could influence the potential for fibrosis to occur in lung tissue by stimulating epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) in a human lung epithelial cell line. An adenocarcinoma-derived alveolar basal epitheli…

Growth inhibitory substances in human breast cyst fluid.

Women who have breast cysts with intracystic Na/K < 3 may have a higher risk of breast cancer than those with intracystic Na/K > 3. Low/undetectable concentrations of TNF alpha and IL-4, both of which have been shown to inhibit growth of human breast cancer cell lines, were found in the majority of breast cyst fluid samples. Intracystic oestradiol concentrations were significantly higher in the low electrolyte ratio group than in the high electrolyte ratio group. Imbalance between growth stimulatory and growth inhibitory substances in cystic breast disease may be an explanation for the higher …

Improved "electrophoretic map" of breast cyst fluid proteins.

Human breast cyst fluid (BCF) proteins were evaluated by sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) after protein denaturation in the presence or absence of 2-mercaptoethanol. Both electrophoretic techniques yielded characteristic and reproducible banding patterns and achieved a high degree of resolution. The known four major protein bands were identified; silver-staining procedure resulted in more discrete bands (at least 13). Crossed-immunoelectrophoresis analyses of BCF allowed an improved protein mapping of this pathological fluid, presenting the opportunity of sim…

Endothelin-like immunoreactivity in human breast cyst fluid.

Immunoreactive endothelin has been detected in 21 of 43 samples of breast cyst fluid (21 cases; 3.5 +/- 0.6 pmol/l, mean +/- SEM. Other 22 cases; not detectable, less than 0.5 pmol/l). Fast protein liquid chromatographic analysis of the immunoreactive endothelin of pooled breast cyst fluid showed two immunoreactive peaks; one in the void volume and the other in the position of endothelin-1. It is probable that endothelin-1 is produced by the epithelial cells lining breast cysts, but significance of the presence of endothelin-1 in breast cyst fluid remains to be elucidated.

Steroid hormone accumulation in human breast cyst fluid.

Elevated concentrations of peptide hormones have been described previously in human breast fluid. In the current study, the levels of cortisol, progesterone, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, androsterone, androsterone sulfate, dehydroisoandrosterone, dehydroisoandrosterone sulfate, estradiol, estrone, estradiol sulfate, and estrone sulfate were measured. The levels of the four 17-ketosteroids and the two estrogen sulfates were markedly elevated over the plasma level, while that of the other compounds was the same or only slightly higher than the plasma levels of the same compounds.

Retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst with fluid‑fluid level: A case report and literature review.

Bronchogenic cyst is a benign lesion with congenital dysplasia. Although the occurrence of this type of cyst is rare in the retroperitoneum, the presence of fluid-fluid levels is an even rarer phenomenon in bronchogenic cysts. Therefore, it can be easily misdiagnosed due to the lack of a universal guideline of specific imaging manifestations. The present report describes the case of a patient with a bronchogenic cyst with fluid-fluid levels whilst also performing a brief literature review to summarize the findings of previous reports on this condition. A 48-year-old male individual presented w

Prenatal diagnosis of a placental cyst: comparison of postnatal biochemical analyses of cyst fluid, amniotic fluid, cord serum, and maternal serum.

A 4 x 4 cm placental cyst was diagnosed prenatally by ultrasonography. At delivery, simultaneous samples of cyst fluid, amniotic fluid, cord blood, and maternal blood (collected 3 hours before delivery) were obtained. Biochemical measurements of cyst fluid, amniotic fluid, cord serum, and maternal serum suggest that the solutes of cyst fluid do not originate exclusively from a single source. In addition, X-cell synthesis and secretion into the cyst fluid may occur.

Differentiation of Pancreatic Cyst Types by Analysis of Rheological Behavior of Pancreatic Cyst Fluid.

Differentiation between mucinous and non-mucinous pancreatic cysts is exceedingly important and challenging, particularly as the former bears malignant transformation potential. Pancreatic cyst fluid (PCF)-based diagnostics, including analyses of biochemical markers, as well as cytology, has shown inadequate accuracy. Herein, a preliminary single-center study of 22 PCF samples, collected by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA), assessed the rheological behavior of PCF and its correlation with lesion type. The dependence of PCF shear viscosity on shear rate was found to…

Giant abdominal cerebrospinal fluid pseudo cyst: A case report.

The cerebrospinal fluid pseudocyst is an uncommon complication of the ventriculoperitoneal shunt used to treat hydrocephalus. It manifests as the accumulation of fluid around the distal end of the catheter, surrounded by a fibrous wall lacking epithelium. Its exact origin remains uncertain. We present here a case of a large peritoneal pseudocyst, filling the abdominal cavity and exerting pressure on adjacent structures. Management involved external drainage followed by the implantation of a new ventriculo-atrial shunt.

Diagnostic potential of tumor DNA from ovarian cyst fluid.

We determined whether the mutations found in ovarian cancers could be identified in the patients' ovarian cyst fluids. Tumor-specific mutations were detectable in the cyst fluids of 19 of 23 (83%) borderline tumors, 10 of 13 (77%) type I cancers, and 18 of 18 (100%) type II cancers. In contrast, no mutations were found in the cyst fluids of 18 patients with benign tumors or non-neoplastic cysts. Though large, prospective studies are needed to demonstrate the safety and clinical utility of this approach, our results suggest that the genetic evaluation of cyst fluids might be able to inform the …

Cerebrospinal echinococcosis: serodiagnosis using different hydatid cyst fluid antigens.

Cerebrospinal hydatid disease diagnosis may impose some problems, as ultrasonography is not applicable and serology may not detect the low antibody titre often associated with intracranial or orbital cystic echinococcosis. Serological tests were performed on 14 cases with intracranial or spinal cystic lesions, out of which 9 were cases of hydatidosis, in addition to 26 cases with other parasitic diseases as detected by stool examination. The sensitivity of all tests and antigens used did not exceed 6 out of the 9 positive cases, and achieved by the Eg1 and Eg2 when applied in the ELISA. The sp

Allopregnanolone, pregnenolone sulfate, and epitestosterone in breast cyst fluid.

The risk of breast cancer is 2 to 5 times higher in patients suffering from gross cystic disease. Breast cysts are categorized into two groups (type I and type II) according to the concentration of electrolytes in the cyst fluid. The two types also differ with respect to accumulation of steroids and steroidogenic enzyme activity. In type I cysts a higher risk of breast carcinoma could be expected. Here, we studied a possible relationship between the type of cyst and levels of epitestosterone (an endogenous antiandrogen), allopregnanolone (a product of 5alpha-reductase activity), and pregnenolo…
