Chronic dacryocystitis caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum.

PURPOSE: To characterize the clinical presentation of Mycobacterium fortuitum dacryocystitis, an unusual microbial cause of this disease. METHODS: The authors present a detailed description of a case of M. fortuitum chronic dacryocystitis and a review of the literature. FINDINGS: Although M. fortuitum is a well-recognized cause of chronic keratitis and corneal ulcer, it has only been reported once previously as a cause of dacryocystitis. Multiple factors that alter the ocular environment of the host may predispose to infection with this organism. The diagnosis requires isolation of the organ…

[Congenital bilateral dacryocystitis and craniofacial dysraphia].

It is presented the observation of a child of 8 years old having a bilateral congenital dacryocyst by the absence of the lacrimonasal duct and multiple facial malformations are: telorbitismus, frontal meningocele, some lesions determined by a craniofacial dehiscence (fissura 2-12) with paramedian dysraphia. The affection has been produced by a disturbance of embryogenesis that occurred during the V-VI intrauterine development weeks, by metrorrhagias and repeated hypoxia that determined a disturbance at the level of the welding frontal buds with meningocele, of the olfactive guttier and the mas

Langerhans cell histiocytosis mimicking acute dacryocystitis.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid neoplasm characterized by clonal neoplastic proliferation of Langerhans-type dendritic cells associated with an inflammatory infiltrate predominantly composed of lymphocytes and eosinophils. In this article, we present an unusual case of LCH with significant swelling in the left lacrimal sac region in a 3-year-old child, clinically mimicking acute dacryocystitis. Microscopically, it showed intense inflammatory infiltrate and histiocytes with irregular nuclei. The tumor cells were positive for S-100 protein, CD1a, and CD207 (langerin). Molecular …

16S rRNA sequencing in chronic dacryocystitis.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The pathogenesis of chronic dacryocystitis (CDC) is associated with a variety of bacteria. Investigating microflora has the potential to provide a theoretical basis for preventing and treating CDC. BACKGROUND: 16S rRNA sequencing is a sequence-based bacterial analysis. The application of 16S rRNA sequencing in CDC is rarely reported. METHODS: A case-control study of infected and healthy eyes diagnosed as CDC patients was conducted. Seventy-eight patients were divided into A (conjunctival sac secretions from healthy eyes), B (conjunctival sac secretions from affected eyes)…

Chronic dacryocystitis due to Mycobacterium abscessus.

Dacryocystitis, inflammation and infection of the lacrimal sac, is most commonly caused by infection from Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. This report highlights a rare case of chronic dacryocystitis due to the atypical pathogen Mycobacterium abscessus. A 62-year-old woman presented with several months of left medial canthal pain, tenderness, and discharge. Exam demonstrated a left tender medial nodule, and imaging showed left lacrimal sac dilation and fluid collection consistent with dacryocystitis. She underwent external dacryocystorhinostomy with drainage and culture of the abscess…

Case report: Congenital dacryocystocele and dacryocystitis.

Congenital dacryocystocele is a uncommon type of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. Differential diagnosis for masses in the medial canthal region of a newborn include encephalocele, hemangioma, nasal glioma, and dermoid cyst. Because of the risk of becoming infected (acute dacryocystitis) and potentially lethal due to septicemia, aggressive management, including admission for intravenous antibiotics and surgical removal, is now advocated by many pediatric ophthalmologists if the cyst cannot be decompressed. Because of the commonly associated nasal cyst, infants with nasolacrimal dacryocyctocele m…

Chronic dacryocystitis in American mucocutaneous leishmaniasis.

PURPOSE: This study describes lacrimal tract involvement and surgical outcome in patients with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis. METHODS: Four patients, ages 20 to 75 years, had nasal lesions resulting from mucocutaneous leishmaniasis and sought treatment for chronic dacryocystitis. Each patient had had lacrimal symptoms since childhood or early adulthood, concomitantly with the development of upper airway lesions. Dacryocystography showed nasolacrimal duct stenosis in all cases on the affected side. Three patients underwent dacryocystorhinostomy (one bilaterally), and one patient had bilateral da…

Dacryocystitis associated with nasolacrimal duct cyst.

An infant presented with persistent epiphora after successful probing of the lacrimal system. Examination of the nose showed a cystic structure occluding lower portion of the lacrimal drainage system. In cases of recurrent obstruction, nasal examination and endoscopic marsupialization may help guide the clinician towards the most appropriate treatment.

[The ocular optic fiber used in the endoscopic sinus surgery of dacryocystorhinostomy in the treatment of chronic dacryocystitis and recurrent dacryocystitis].

OBJECTIVE: To explore a method for locating the area of lacrimal sac in dacryocystorhinostomy under endoscopy. METHOD: Sixty-eight patients were performed dacryocystorhinostomy under endoscopy. Take light spot of ocular optic fiber as the lacrimal sac projection to the lateral wall of the nasal cavity position. RESULT: With the guiding of ocular optic fiber, lacrimal sac can be located accurately. The operating time of dacryocystorhinostomy under endoscopy was shortened significantly, and the operation procedure was simplified. All patients were followed up for 2 years, only 2 recurrent case

Microbiology and Antimicrobial Susceptibility in Adult Dacryocystitis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the microbiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of dacryocystitis in adults and identify the changing trends over time in Taiwan. METHODS: This is a single-centered, retrospective study. We retrospectively reviewed adult patients with dacryocystitis from January 2012 to December 2021 in a tertiary medical center in Taiwan. The pathogens and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of the pus cultures from the lacrimal sac were collected. RESULTS: Thirty-five cultures in acute and 211 cultures in chronic dacryocystitis were collected. Of the 220 isolates, a similar prop…

Dacryocystitis With Skin Defects Secondary to Septorhinoplasty.

Septorhinoplasty is a surgical procedure frequently performed by surgeons dealing with facial aesthetic surgery and includes various risks. … ervention may also occur. Most injuries to the lacrimal system remain asymptomatic. Postrhinoplasty dacryocystitis usually occurs secondary to soft-tissue edema that compresses the lacrimal system and typically resolves within 1 to 2 weeks. After reviewing the literature and examining possible traumatic mechanisms, we recommend that the infections in the lacrima …

Clinicobacteriological study of chronic dacryocystitis in adults.

Chronic dacryocystitis is the inflammation of lacrimal sac, frequently caused by bacteria. Obstruction of nasolacrimal duct converts the lacrimal sac a reservoir of infection. It is a constant threat to cornea and orbital soft tissue. Moreover, it causes social embarrassment due to chronic watering from the eye. This study was conducted to find out the current clinicobacteriological profile of chronic dacryocystitis in adults. A total of 56 adult patients were selected from ophthalmology OPD. Detail history and clinical examinations were carried out. All patients underwent either dacryocystorh…

An orbital abscess secondary to acute dacryocystitis.

An orbital abscess is an ophthalmic surgical emergency that is typically caused by the spread of bacteria from adjacent structures, such as the sinuses, eyelids, or teeth. Although acute dacryocystitis is commonly associated with preseptal cellulitis, it rarely causes orbital infection. Infection of the lacrimal sac will typically localize in the preseptal space because the lacrimal sac lies anterior to the orbital septum. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of an intraconal abscess secondary to acute dacryocystitis. The key points in the surgical management of this entity are …

[Endonasal surgery of posttraumatic dacryocystitis in children].

Posttraumatic dacryocystitis in children are associated with different anatomic defects of the external nose, nasal cavity, eyelids and adjacent tissues. These injuries may complicate conventional endonasal dacryocystorhynostomy. The first step in the treatment of posttraumatic dacryocystitis should be surgical correction of nasal breathing. It is also necessary to apply bone window at least 1.2 cm in diameter followed by formation of the stoma using intubation tube.
