Auditory neurophysiological characteristics in unilateral deafness: influence of deafness side.

BACKGROUND: The characteristics of auditory processing and reorganization after unilateral deafness remain unclear. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine subcortical and cortical auditory neurophysiological features in young adults with unilateral deafness according to the side of deafness. METHODS: Patient group: A total of 27 men (25.93- ± 3.64-year old) with unilateral deafness [15 right-sided and 12 left-sided deafness (L-SD)] were included. Twenty-one adult males (29.90 ± 3.05 years) with normal bilateral hearing were included in the Normal Control group. Neurodiagnostic Auditory

Deafness following mumps: the possible pathogenesis and incidence of deafness.

Mumps is thought to be the most common cause of unilateral acquired sensorineural deafness in children. Mumps deafness is usually sudden in onset, profound or complete, and may be associated with vestibular symptoms. The authors' clinical survey of 55 patients with unilateral deafness which could reasonably be ascribed to mumps indicates that the hearing loss is exclusively unilateral, severe or total and permanent, and that approximately 45% of the patients experienced dysequilibrium of vestibular origin. An analysis of the present series of mumps deafness also suggests that the primary route

Congenital Deafness and Deaf-Mutism: A Historical Perspective.

Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit and one of the most common congenital abnormalities. The estimated prevalence of moderate and severe hearing loss in a normal newborn is 0.1-0.3%, while the prevalence is 2-4% in newborns admitted to the newborn intensive care unit. Therefore, early detection and prompt treatment are of utmost importance in preventing the unwanted sequel of hearing loss on normal language development. The problem of congenital deafness is today addressed on the one hand with hearing screening at birth, on the other with the early (at around 3 months of age) appli

Deaf, blind or deaf-blind: Is touch enhanced?

When someone looses one type of sensory input, s/he may compensate by using the sensory information conveyed by other senses. To verify whether loosing a sense or two has consequences on a spared sensory modality, namely touch, and whether these consequences depend on the type of sensory loss, we investigated the effects of deafness and blindness on temporal and spatial tactile tasks in deaf, blind and deaf-blind people. Deaf and deaf-blind people performed the spatial tactile task better than the temporal one, while blind and controls showed the opposite pattern. Deaf and deaf-blind participa

Etiology of deafness at the Yeditepe School for the deaf in Istanbul.

OBJECTIVE: The etiology of deafness can be classified as genetic, acquired and unknown. An unknown etiology was a high incidence in previous reports. The aim of this study is to explore the etiology of deafness and to reduce the cases in the unknown group. METHODS: This study was conducted on 162 students at the Yeditepe School for the deaf. Otologic, physical and psychological examinations were performed by a team of doctors including four otologists, a geneticist, a dentist, an ophthalmologist and an audiologist. RESULTS: A genetic cause was identified in 41.35%, acquired 37.65% and unknow

Etiology of deafness in Afyon school for the deaf in Turkey.

OBJECTIVE: Otolaryngologists play an important role in the evaluation of children with a hearing impairment. The group of unknown cause still has a high incidence. The purposes of this study were to determine the etiology of deafness in Afyon School for the Deaf in Turkey and to compare the results with the other studies from Turkey and other countries. METHODS: This study was a retrospective analysis of 130 deaf students, aged 5-16 years. Medical and family histories of the children were obtained. Clinical and laboratory examinations were carried out. RESULTS: Etiological groups showed the

Geriatric sudden deafness.

PURPOSE: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss, briefly sudden deafness (SD), in the elderly remains less investigated despite rapidly aging population in most countries around the world. This study investigated whether aging process affects the treatment outcome of SD in the elderly. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty patients with SD, comprising 40 geriatric patients aged >65 years and 40 non-geriatric patients aged 55-64 years, were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent an inner ear test battery including audiometry, and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potential (cVEMP), ocular VEMP (oV

[Prevention of deafness].

About 17% of the population is affected by deafness. Etiologies may vary but the result is often the degeneration of the hair cells and the auditory neurons induced by factors present in environment of the individual. Therefore, the modification of this environment is crucial to preserve the neurosensory structures of the inner ear. In this paper, we will review two major causes of deafness: drug induced and sound trauma induced hearing loss for which a protective strategy can be available. Aminoglycosides and platin derivatives are toxic for the inner ear and the understanding of the pathophy

[Aging and deafness].

The hearing loss that appears with ageing or presbyacusis should not lead to withdrawal from communication an elderly person. The disorder should be recognised early. The first warning sign is difficulty for understanding in a noisy environment. When an individual indicates this problem, measurements of auditory functions should first be made and regular followed-up should be scheduled or therapeutic measures taken. Such measures generally include a hearing aid that amplifies the affected frequencies and speech therapy to learn lip reading. Some patients may profit from psychological follow-up

[Hereditary sensorineural deafness].

Deafness is the most common sensory defect. The investigation of the cause of deafness is critical for genetic counselling, and sometimes for appropriate management of associated pathologies. About two thirds of cases of congenital deafness are genetic forms, and the proportion is probably similar concerning the forms of deafness that appears during childhood. Some of the genetic forms are syndromic and the associated signs are sometimes inapparent or may appear during childhood. Consequently, a systematic search for the most frequent syndromes is necessary in each deaf individual. In the majo

Deafness and vertigo.

This review follows closely on the publication of significant handbooks and symposia concerned with neuro-otology, pharmacology of emesis, imaging, cochlear prostheses and aspects of vertigo which reflect the considerable advances that have been made in clinical and basic neuroscience in these areas in recent years. The value of the cochlear prosthesis has been demonstrated convincingly and may well be a model for the future of brain implantations in diverse disorders of the central nervous system. Imaging of the inner ear has made spectacular advances to provide invaluable aids to diagnosis.

Pedophilia and deafness.

Data from 22 cases of deaf individuals suffering from pedophilia are presented along with a tabular summary of recent articles from the deaf press, about deaf victims of pedophilia and deaf pedophiles. Results indicate a number of factors that distinguish deaf pedophiles from hearing pedophiles. First is the prevalence of Primitive Personality Disorder in the deaf group. Corollary to this, with a significant number of pedophiles, competence to stand trial is a major issue. Other significant differences include a high rate of brain damage, illiteracy, poor communication skills, and other psychi
