The aim of the present paper was to review the most important mechanisms explaining the possible association of vitamin D deficiency and cardiovascular diseases, focusing on recent experimental and clinical data. Low vitamin D levels favor atherosclerosis enabling vascular inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, formation of foam cells, and proliferation of smooth muscle cells. The antihypertensive properties of vitamin D include suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, renoprotective effects, direct effects on endothelial cells and calcium metabolism, inhibition of growth of va

Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) is closely associated with the functions of the nervous, immune and endocrine systems. It also participates in the metabolic processes of proteins, lipids and carbohydrates. Pyridoxine deficiency may result in neurological disorders including convulsions and epileptic encephalopathy and may lead to infant abnormalities. The Intravenous administration of pyridoxine to patients results in a dramatic cessation of seizures. A number of analytical methods were developed for the determination of pyridoxine in different dosage forms, food materials and biological fluids. These

It has been established rather surely that patients with chronic liver disease, Crohn's disease, chronic pancreatis and celiac disease are deficient in zinc and vitamin A. A large number of clinical symptoms can be caused by these deficiencies, due to the fact that these compounds have numerous functions. Zinc deficiency in liver cirrhosis is probably caused by portosystemic shunting, whereas in Crohn's disease abnormalities of protein metabolism are suggested as etiologic factor. Vitamin A deficiency can be considered as a consequence of disturbed zinc metabolism. Some studies in appropriate

Iron deficiency (ID), with or without anemia, is often caused by digestive diseases and should always be investigated, except in very specific situations, as its causes could be serious diseases, such as cancer. Diagnosis of ID is not always easy. Low serum levels of ferritin or transferrin saturation, imply a situation of absolute or functional ID. It is sometimes difficult to differentiate ID anemia from anemia of chronic diseases, which can coexist. In this case, other parameters, such as soluble transferrin receptor activity can be very useful. After an initial evaluation by clinical histo

Recently a number of defects of fatty acid transport and beta-oxidation have been described. Primary carnitine deficiency presents itself as muscle carnitine deficiency, systemic carnitine deficiency or a cardiomyopathic subtype. Another abnormality of fatty acid transport is due to inner carnitine palmitoyl transferase deficiency, usually associated with a myoglobinuric phenotype. Long chain, medium and short chain acyl-CoA-dehydrogenase defects are usually associated to Reye's syndrome, encephalopathy, organic aciduria and secondary carnitine deficiency.

Primary immune deficiency diseases (PIDs) are a heterogeneous group of inherited diseases characterized by variable genetic immune defects, conferring susceptibility to recurrent infections. They have a vast array of manifestations some of which involve the gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary systems. These complications can be the consequence of five different factors, namely, infection, autoimmune process, unregulated inflammation, malignancies and complications of therapeutic intervention. They may precede the PID diagnosis and, once developed, they pose high risk of morbidity. Untrained cli…

Using isoelectric focusing in polyacrylamide gel, alpha-1-antitrypsin phenotyping was carried out in 1,000 normal Nigerians and in 25 with hepatocellular carcinoma, 17 with cirrhosis of the liver and 193 with neonatal jaundice. The percentage frequency of the homozygous alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency state (PiZZ) in the normal, healthy population was 0.2% compared with 4% in those with hepatoma, 5.9% in those with liver cirrhosis and 0.5% in those with neonatal jaundice. These findings suggest that alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency may be a contributory factor in the pathogenesis of hepatocellula

The term "porphyria cutanea tarda" originally described the dermatological manifestations of various chronic porphyrias. Its usage now is usually restricted to disorders associated with a deficiency of uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD), for which the term "UROD-deficiency" may be more appropriate. Four etiologic agents have been implicated in this condition: alcohol, oral estrogens, halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons, and iron. An inherited deficiency of UROD is also recognized, with increased susceptibility to these agents. Certain halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons can cause UROD-deficienc

Vitamin D is converted to a steroid hormone by 25-hydroxylation in the liver and then by 1-hydroxylation in the kidney to produce the circulating hormone 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D [1,25(OH2D]. This hormone then functions in cells of the intestinal mucosa and in bone to maintain whole-body calcium homeostasis. Classical vitamin D deficiency thus results in defective calcium homeostasis. Yet vitamin D deficiency is often reported in people with various diseases not associated with whole-body calcium homeostasis. Because of these associations with vitamin D deficiency, clinical trials have been un

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITD) are the most prevalent organ-specific autoimmune disorders. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the proper functioning of the immune system. The aim of this study was therefore to investigate the correlation between vitamin B12 deficiency and AITD.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 306 patients (aged 18-65 years, mean - 37.6 ± 11.3 years and comprising 87 males and 219 females) were studied retrospectively (observational study). Patients were divided into groups: with and without vitamin B12 deficiency, and with and without AITD. Differences b
