The authors demonstrate some pitfalls of the diagnosis of foreign bodies wedged in the hypopharynx (drawing instrument) and oesophagus (beef bone) in two children who developed extensive retropharyngeal abscesses. Both foreign bodies were endoscopically extracted on the eighth day after the event. The affected area recovered without sequelae.

An account of a rare mucosal form of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica in a 26-year-old female patient. The mucosal manifestations involved severe stenosis of the oral portion of the oesophagus. After exhausting all conservative therapeutic procedures (corticoids, transfer factor, dilatation), the stenosis of the oesophagus was successfully operated by resection of the stenotic portion and a plastic operation.

Cine-endoscopy was used to study the deglutition reflex in 2 apparently normal horses. Closure of the nasopharyngeal sphincter was brought about by a lowering of the pharyngeal roof and an elevation of the soft palate caudal to the pharyngeal ostia of the auditory tubes. The medial cartilages of the ostia were not directly involved in bringing about closure of the sphincter. It is postulated that the opening of the ostia of the auditory tubes is brought about during deglutition by the combined action of the palatopharyngeus, pterygopharyngeus and tensor veli palatini muscles.

The deglutition of amniotic fluid in utero by the anencephalic fetus is a controversial subject. We have studied 7 anencephalic pregnancies complicated by hydramnion in their third trimester of gestation. Fetographies revealed that 6 out of 7 anencephalic monsters showed signs of swallowing of the contrast material after only 3 h. The baby which was born dead could not swallow at all. Despite centuries of investigation, questions and controversies remain regarding the fundamental genesis and motor pattern of swallow. Two significant topics include inspiratory muscle activity during swallow (Schluckatmung, i.e., "swallow-breath") and anatomical boundaries of the swallow pattern generator. We discuss the long history of reports regarding the presence or absence of Schluckatmung and the possible advantages of and neural basis for such activity, leading to current theories and novel experimental directions.

Surgical treatment of pharyngeal carcinoma implies different reconstructive procedures. Despite primary healing, in some cases cicatricial shrinkage occurs, resulting in dysphagia. Of 113 patients with carcinoma of the oro- and hypopharynx in the last 4 years, 35 patients were studied in a specific follow-up examination.
