[Coeliac disease and dentistry].

Coeliac disease is a chronic autoimmune enteropathy, which is caused by exposure to dietary gluten in genetically pre-disposed individuals. -Approximately 0.5-1% of the Dutch population has coeliac disease, diag-nosed at both younger and older age. Treatment consists of a strict gluten-free diet. Symptoms can be diverse, including dental and oral manifestations. These dental and oral manifestations are often seen in patients with coeliac disease, although most of them are nonspecific. This is not the case for the symmetric enamel defects described by Aine and colleagues, which are very specifi

Significance of biofilms in dentistry.

In the past decades significant scientific progress has taken place in the knowledge about biofilms. They constitute multilayer conglomerate … d necessitating sometimes removal of the implant or prosthesis. Biofilms play an increasing role in dentistry as a result of more and more broad use in dental practice of plastic and implantable materials. Biofilms are produced on the surfaces of teeth as dental plaque, in the para-nasal sinuses, on prostheses, dental implants, as well as in waterlines of a …

Biomaterials in Relation to Dentistry.

Dental caries remains a challenge in the improvement of oral health. It is the most common and widespread biofilm-dependent oral disease, re … rmance. Amalgam, the silver grey biomaterial that has been widely used as a restorative material in dentistry, is currently in throes of being phased out, especially with the Minimata convention and treaty being signed by a number of countries (January 2013; http://mercuryconvention.org/Convention/) that aims to control the anthropogenic release of mercury …

[Vaccinations in dentistry. An update].

The purpose of this current paper is to give a simple update and overview about vaccinations for dental health care workers considering the new guidelines published in February 2014 by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health. It is recommended to have at least a valid protection against hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, influenza, varicella, diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis and pertussis. Dental health care workers are highly exposed and high risk carriers for inoculable diseases, therefore regular refreshment of vaccinations is necessary for public health and their own health.

Antimicrobial prophylaxis in dentistry.

Use of antibiotics both in humans and animals runs along with effects that can contribute to the spread of antibiotic resistance. Although several available guidelines for antibiotic treatment have been published to date, clinical practice in dentistry and particularly in oral surgery is not free from controversies regarding antibiotic prophylaxis. Antibiotic coverage to prevent infectious endocarditis, joint prostheses infections or local infections requires a careful evaluation of the patient condition, associated risks and other aspects that could influence the decision. It is of great rele…

Complications in implant dentistry.

The mainstream use of dental implants has allowed millions of patients to benefit from the predictability of dental implant therapy and, in many instances, dental implants have become the standard of care. Even though success rates in implant dentistry are well above 90 percent, complications do occur. Most complications are preventable with proper planning and execution. Others are inherent to the risks of surgery and may require intervention. The purpose of this paper is to classify the possible complications that may occur and to discuss their prevention and management.

Macroabrasion in pediatric dentistry.

One of the most frequent reasons for seeking dental care is discolored anterior teeth. Macroabrasion is a technique used for the removal of localized superficial white spots and other surface stains. This article has compiled three case reports with relevant clinical photographs of discolored teeth where the treatment regimen included macroabrasion alone as well as macro-abrasion in combination with anterior composite restorations.

Erbium lasers in dentistry.

Erbium hard tissue lasers have the capability to prepare enamel, dentin, caries, cementum, and bone in addition to cutting soft tissue. The ability of hard tissue lasers to reduce or eliminate vibrations, the audible whine of drills, microfractures, and some of the discomfort that many patients fear and commonly associate with high-speed handpieces is impressive. In addition, these lasers can be used with a reduced amount of local anesthetic for many procedures. Today, these instruments have evolved from their initial use for all classes of cavity preparations to their ability for removing sof

Dentistry in ancient mesopotamia.

Sumer, an empire in ancient Mesopotamia (southern Iraq), is well known as the cradle of our modern civilization and the home of biblical Abraham. An analysis of skeletal remains from cemeteries at the ancient cities of Ur and Kish (circa 2000 B.C.), show a genetically homogeneous, diseased, and short-lived population. These ancient Mesopotamians suffered severe dental attrition (95 percent), periodontal disease (42 percent), and caries (2 percent). Many oral congenital and neoplastic lesions were noted. During this period, the "local dentists" knew only a few modern dental techniques. Skeletal

Cancer awareness and dentistry.

Dentists have the prime responsibility to screen for cancer of the oral cavity. A history, head and neck examination, and intraoral examination including the pharynx should be performed on all new dental patients and at all recall appointments. Patients with lesions that appear clinically to be cancer are best managed by immediate referral to a head and neck surgeon or cancer treatment center for biopsy and treatment. Lesions that may be cancerous can be biopsied by the general dentist or oral surgeon. Dentists also should be prepared to talk with patients at risk for cancer of the breast, col

Dentistry and tuberculosis in the 1900s.

The number of new cases--or incidence--of tuberculosis is increasing in nearly every region of the world. A number of forces have resulted in the increased incidence of TB in developed countries, including the HIV epidemic, homelessness, and emigration from highly endemic regions. Although the number of new cases in Canada is relatively constant, the TB experience in the United States serves as a reminder that this situation could change rapidly. The appearance of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis has added to the urgency of situation. The basic methods of preventing TB transmission include pre

Therapeutics and sedation in dentistry.

Sedation can help to overcome the fear that prevents many Canadians from accepting dental treatment. This article discusses the indications and contraindications for oral, intramuscular, and inhalation sedation as used by the general dental practitioner for both adult and child patients, with a note on the growing number of specialist dental anesthetists who provide intravenous out-patient sedation. Local anesthesia is discussed with reference to allergic reactions, malignant hyperthermia, and the use of epinephrine as a vasoconstrictor in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
