The first aim of this study was to collect a large sample of radiographs from children with congenitally missing teeth (CMT) in the primary dentition and to analyse the local relationship between agenesis of a primary tooth and the presence/absence of its permanent successor. The second aim was to compare, in the same sample, the pattern of agenesis in the primary dentition with the developmental pattern seen in the permanent dentition. 124 dentists from 72 municipalities contributed to the investigation of a total of 213 children. The dentists were asked to lend existing radiographic material

In the mixed dentition, when there is a discrepancy between the bony structures and the teeth, in certain cases, serial extractions are performed in order to guide the eruption of permanent teeth and obtain a correct occlusal function. The treatment consists in the extraction of primary teeth and then of first bicuspids. The choice of the first tooth to be extracted is based upon the position of the crowns of the permanent teeth and their degree of root maturation. Then the first bicuspid is extracted as soon as or prior to its eruption. This interceptive treatment has limited indications whic

Tooth agenesis is one of the most common congenital anomalies seen in humans. Although absence of one or more teeth is common but absence of multiple teeth is rare. Oligodontia is a rare developmental anomaly, involving agenesis of six or more permanent teeth, excluding the third molars. The reported prevalence of oligodontia in permanent dentition is 0.14%. Oligodontia can present as an isolated condition or as a part of a syndrome. The present case report highlights a unique case of non syndromic oligodontia, with agenesis of four permanent incisors, left permanent canine and right second pr

Maxillary canine premolar transposition is the most frequently reported transposition type, which many orthodontists face. Although correcting the transposed tooth order is not advised after the eruption of the permanent tooth, several articles published in the last decade demonstrated nonextraction treatment of transposition using fixed mechanics. This article describes the nonextraction treatment of a complete transposition between a maxillary left canine and a first premolar, using similar mechanics as suggested earlier. The correct tooth order was established with a functional Class I cani

Congenital aplasia (agenesis) is an important development dental anomaly. There is a big discrepancy between the data on the prevalence of aplasia in dental literature. The authors analyzed orthopantomograms of 1875 children and adolescents at the Department of Dentistry for Children and Orthodontics of Semmelweis University. The prevalence of congenital aplasia was found 15.68% (294 subjects). There was no difference between the sexes. The most frequently missing teeth were the upper lateral incisors, the lower second premolars, the upper second premolars and the lower central incisors. The h

Variations in size, form and morphology of the teeth can result in anomalies such as macrodontia, microdontia, hyperdontia, hypodontia, double tooth, dens evaginatus, dens invaginatus, and talon cusp. A trait may occur more commonly in certain ethnic groups. Among these traits are shovel-shaped incisors, lingual tubercle, Carabelli's trait and protostylid of the molars. Because people are traveling more frequently than ever before, and there are many migrants in different parts of the world, it is increasingly important for dental professionals to be aware of the characteristics and prevalence

The purpose of the study was to investigate primary and permanent tooth anomalies of 5-year-old children in Taranaki; 1,680 children were examined by school dental therapists, and the presence of hypodontia, hyperdontia, and double teeth recorded. Panoramic radiographs were taken of those children with anomalies of the primary teeth. Anomalies of the primary teeth were detected in 23 children (1.4 percent). Six children (3 boys and 3 girls) had hypodontia, 3 children (2 boys and 1 girl) had a supernumerary tooth, and 14 children (9 boys and 5 girls) had double teeth. Six of the affected teeth

Multiple stepwise regression was used in the selection of mixed dentition variables capable of predicting the total breadth of the unerupted permanent canine and premolars. The material consisted of 77 children. Stone casts were made before and after eruption of the canine and premolars. At the first examination when the children were, on the average, 10 years old, intraoral roentgenograms were obtained of the canine and the premolars. To predict the total breadth of the upper canine and premolars the buccolingual breadth of the upper first permanent molar and measurements on roentgenograms of
