Mercury exanthem as occupational dermatitis.

A patient developed an exanthem after inhalation of mercury vapors. Clinically and histopathologically the exanthem resembled an erythema exudativum multiformelike drug eruption.

The epidemiology of occupational contact dermatitis.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) ranks first of all occupational diseases in many countries. The incidence rate is believed to be around 0.5-1.9 cases per 1000 full-time workers per year. Epidemiological studies play an important role in observing disease trends, analysing risk factors, and monitoring the effect of preventive measures. In this review article the lack of truly epidemiologic data on OCD and the difficulties of those studies are illustrated. The following issues are highlighted: case ascertainment and bias, the distribution of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in the

The prognosis of occupational contact dermatitis.

Despite the development of new drugs and improvements in working conditions, the prognosis for recovery from contact dermatitis has not changed significantly over the past 50 years. This chapter reviews the prognosis for both irritant and allergic contact dermatitis and discusses the main reasons that contact dermatitis persists, including misdiagnosis and continued exposure to irritants and allergens.

Occupational dermatitis in bakers: a clue for atopic contact dermatitis.

6 patients are described who developed contact dermatitis after cereal contact on atopic skin for periods of 2 to 20 years. 2 patients were wheat flour patch-test-positive. They had punch biopsies taken for standard histological and immunohistochemical investigation by labeling with monoclonal antibodies, anti-DR and anti-IgE. Sections showed features of contact dermatitis. There were many dendritic cells located perivascularly in the papilla and in the epidermidis, intensely positive for monoclonal anti-IgE antibody. In control atopic subjects, there were a few perivascular IgE positive cells

Occupational contact dermatitis in a manicurist.

We report a case of a manicurist who developed an allergic skin reaction to acrylates, manifested by itchy erythema, papules, vesicles and fissures on her hands, fingertips, forearm and eyelids. Patch tests showed positive reactions to three nail products used: ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate in (meth)acrylate series. By using gel nail products, our patient became sensitized to 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. We assume that this had been the trigger, leading to the occurrence of cross-reactions between numerous acrylates incl

Occupational Contact Dermatitis Caused by Artichokes.

Introduction: Few cases of skin diseases caused by exposure to artichokes have been published. Artichokes contain sesquiterpene lactones, which are known to be sensitizing. Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) has also been diagnosed. To our knowledge, no protein contact dermatitis (PCD) has yet been reported to be induced by artichoke. Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify the different types of contact dermatitis that may be due to occupational exposure to artichokes and the professions concerned. Materials and Methods: We conducted a descriptive study, retrieving data from the Fren

Jet Fuel-Associated Occupational Contact Dermatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Occupational contact dermatitis is a ubiquitous problem. Sailors onboard U.S. Navy vessels are at high risk given the multitude of potential workplace exposures. Solvents, petrochemicals, and fuels are abundant and can cause irritant or allergic contact dermatitis. Symptoms of contact dermatitis can cause inability to work and, if chronic, may require a change in rating or job. Prevention of this issue requires patient education about the risks and correct personnel protective equipment. Even with preventative strategies in place, exposures and cases of contact dermatitis will oc

Recent Trends in Occupational Contact Dermatitis.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) remains prevalent among workers and impacts quality of life and workability. The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent advances in occupational contact dermatitis as well as potential hazardous agents in the workplaces causing OCD. The review covers new developments in the epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, and management of occupational contact dermatitis. This article also provides updated information on the prevalence of work-related skin symptoms and on new contact allergens among working population. It is emphasized that in the context of

Occupational contact dermatitis from a grease.

BACKGROUND: Contact allergy to grease is rare and often not even suspected. We investigated such a case in which the detected allergen was the stabilizer in the grease, which is rarely found as an allergen. OBJECTIVE: Thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was used in a novel way and helped detect the allergen. METHODS: Patch testing with our standard series, a metal-working series, the different substances individually, the grease in serial dilution and extracts of personal objects, the TLC plate. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was also used. RESULTS: Test results indicated contact allergy

Occupational issues of irritant contact dermatitis.

Occupational irritant contact dermatitis (ICD), a non-immunological cutaneous inflammatory response to a workplace substance, comprises a major portion of occupational dermatoses in industrialized societies, resulting in considerable social and economic implications. The sheer morphological variety of ICD presents a diagnostic and classification challenge; ideotypes identified to date include acute, chronic and cumulative irritant dermatitis, delayed acute irritant dermatitis, irritant reaction, pustular irritant dermatitis, suberythematous irritation, sensory irritation, friction dermatitis a

[Occupational dermatitis in health care personnel].

Occupational dermatosis are frequent among healthcare workers. Irritant hand dermatitis is more common than allergic contact dermatitis. It is enhanced by the exposure to irritants: water, detergents, disinfectants and a history of atopic dermatitis. Natural rubber latex contained in rubber gloves can induce contact urticaria or generalized immediate allergic reactions. Contact eczema can be induced by rubber accelerators such as thiurams, disinfectants (glutaraldehyde, dodecyldimethylammonium). Nurses can become sensitized to handled drugs (antibiotics, propacetamol...). These occupational al
