[Juvenile dermatomyositis].

Basic aim of this paper is presentation of probable epidemiological characteristics of juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) in children of Croatia, due to the fact that severity of condition in majority of patients require treatment in our Department of Pediatrics, KBC Zagreb. Our intention is to present guidelines of current diagnostic approach from recent literature, with special accent on therapy. JDM was previously considered as infaust disease, while current therapy has favourable prognosis for complete resolution, as the only one mesenchymopathy with such prognosis. In period between 1988 and …

Juvenile dermatomyositis.

The clinical profile of 7 children and their follow-up is described. There was female preponderance with mate to female ratio of 1:6. The median age of onset was 6 years. All the patients had skin rash, muscle weakness and abnormal enzyme profile. Muscle biopsy was performed in 6 and was abnormal in all of them. The electromyogram (EMG) was performed in 6 and was found abnormal in five. All the children responded well to corticosteroids. Two children received intravenous dexamethasone bolus and showed good response.

Juvenile dermatomyositis.

Juvenile dermatomyositis is a relatively rare, multisystem disease characterized by a nonsuppurative myositis which causes symmetrical weakness, rash and vasculitis; this last can affect the gastrointestinal tract and the myocardium. Late development of calcinosis is seen in approximately two thirds of patients. Its etiology is unknown, although there are clues that it may be an unusual response to a viral infection. Some 50% of children will have a very acute, rapidly progressive disease, while the remainder may present subacutely with rash and a gradually progressive weakness of muscles, joi…

Juvenile dermatomyositis.

Juvenile dermatomyositis is a multisystem disease characterized by muscular inflammation affecting primarily the skin and muscle; it presents as a nonsuppurative myositis causing symmetrical weakness and typical skin rashes that affect the face and hands in particular, but can occur at any site. [Juvenile dermatomyositis].

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a chronic multisystem inflammatory disease that primarily involves skin and muscles. The clinical picture is mainly characterized by the typical cutaneous rash and by skeletal muscle weakness. Nevertheless the vasculitic process may extend in some cases to other organs such as lung, joints or gastrointestinal system. Calcinosis represents a relatively frequent complication of JDM and occurs in most cases during the late stage of the disease. Usually serum levels of muscle enzymes are elevated and electromyography shows signs of myositis. Muscle biopsy is gener…

[Bullous dermatomyositis].

The authors present a case of bullous dermatitis with clinical and biological polymyositis. The cause of the blisters can be found in an intense oedema of the superficial and middle dermis and is favoured by liquefaction of the basal layer and fibrinoid degeneration of the superficial dermis. It is diagnosed as dermatomyositis with malignancy even though it has been impossible to confirm the nature of the tumor. The diagnosis is being argued with other diseases that occasionally are vesiculobullous.

Paraneoplastic Dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis and its association with malignancy is well known. Though many tumors like breast, ovary, lung carcinomas are reported to be associated with it, cervical carcinoma is a very rare one. Tumors in these patients are usually unmasked by abnormal findings in the medical history and physical examination. Here we report case of a postmenopausal female who presented with subacute onset of weakness of all four limbs. Treatment of the underlying tumor relieved the symptoms of dermatomyositis in our patient.
