[Test method of methanol content in detergent].

A test method of methanol content in detergent using a headspace-GC method was established. A 1 g aliquot of test sample was mixed with 0.4 mg of 2-propanol and made up to 20 mL with water. Then, 5 mL of test solution was placed in a headspace vial. The vial was sealed and incubated for 30 min at 60°C, then the headspace gas was analyzed by GC-FID. The recovery from spiked 1 mg/g of methanol was 95.6-100.6%. The determination limit was 0.1 mg/g. Using this method, the methanol content in 14 kinds of detergents was quantified. Methanol was detected from two detergents at the levels of 0.13 and …

Detergent induced lysis of erythrocytes in kwashiorkor.

The effect of the non-ionic detergent Nonidet P40 on lysis of erythrocytes in children suffering from kwashiorkor was studied. The concentration of the detergent causing 50% haemolysis was significantly reduced in these patients. Detergent haemolysis was more sensitive than osmotic fragility (which was reduced). The abnormality was only slight in marasmic children.

Detergents without a drain: the evolutionary logic (and liability) of sphingolipids.

Sphingolipids are evolutionarily conserved lipids that, I contend, emerged as a solution to a fundamental biochemical problem: cells require fatty acids, yet these molecules are potent detergents. In higher metazoans, a metabolic asymmetry amplifies this physical threat: unlike most macronutrients, fatty acids cannot be readily converted into nonlipid forms of biomass. Thus, when their supply exceeds energetic demand, they remain chemically committed lipids with the capacity to destabilize membranes and disrupt cellular organization. The emergence of sphingolipid metabolism offered an elegant …

Risk assessment of common household detergents: hazard identification and safety classification.

Household detergents are widely used for cleaning and sanitation, yet their complex chemical compositions can pose significant risks to human health and the environment due to the presence of toxic and poorly regulated ingredients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the safety profile of commercially available household detergents by identifying their primary ingredients, assessing their potential environmental and human health hazards, and proposing a classification scheme based on their associated risk levels. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to identify the potent…

Occurrence and concentrations of isothiazolinones in detergents and cosmetics in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the frequency of contact allergy to isothiazolinones has increased alarmingly in Europe, but only limited data are available on concentrations of isothiazolinones in consumer products. OBJECTIVES: To examine the current frequency of isothiazolinones [methylisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI), benzisothiazolinone (BIT), and octylisothiazolinone (OIT)] in a wide array of detergents and cosmetics relevant for the Swiss population. METHODS: By means of a market survey, the occurrence of isothiazolinones was investigated in 1948 consumer products. …

Irritancy potential of 17 detergents used commonly by the Indian household.

BACKGROUND: Detergents are used by almost every household in the developed and developing world. Soap and most detergents are anionic surfactants and attack the horny layer of the skin and increase its permeability with little or no inflammatory change and may result in hand eczema, which is very distressing and incapacitating. AIM: To evaluate the irritant potential of common household detergents (laundry and dish wash) used by the Indian population using a 24-hour patch test and to convincingly educate the patients on the detergents less likely to cause irritation in the particular individu…

Allergic contact dermatitis to detergents: a multicenter study to assess prevalence.

BACKGROUND: Allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) to optical brighteners and enzymes in laundry detergents was the focus of numerous reports in the early 1970s. Subsequently, there has been little published on the incidence of allergic reactions to chemicals in laundry detergents. Nonetheless, consumers and physicians continue to ascribe allergic contact reactions to laundry detergents. OBJECTIVE: This article reports the findings of a multicenter study on the prevalence of patch test reactions to a liquid and a granular laundry detergent provided by Procter & Gamble Company (Cincinnati, Ohio). …

Bile salts: natural detergents for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases.

The development of new, safe, topical microbicides for intravaginal use for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases is imperative. Previous studies have suggested that bile salts may inhibit human immunodeficiency virus infection; however, their activities against other sexually transmitted pathogens have not been reported. To further explore the potential role of bile salts in preventing sexually transmitted diseases, we examined the in vitro activities and cytotoxicities of select bile salts against Chlamydia trachomatis, herpes simplex virus (types 1 and 2), Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a

Allergies Come Clean: The Role of Detergents in Epithelial Barrier Dysfunction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The prevalence and incidence of allergic disease have been rising in Westernized countries since the twentieth century. Increasingly, evidence suggests that damage to the epithelium initiates and shapes innate and adaptive immune responses to external antigens. The objective of this review is to examine the role of detergents as a potential risk factor for developing allergic disease. RECENT FINDINGS: Herein, we identify key sources of human detergent exposure. We summarize the evidence suggesting a possible role for detergents and related chemicals in initiating epithelial…

Detergents and bleaches are sources of chromium contact dermatitis in Israel.

Total chromium levels were determined in 38 detergents and 12 bleaches on the market in Israel (45 locally produced, 5 imported). The samples were analyzed by Zeeman-corrected graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Chromium levels were higher than 5 ppm in 28 (56%) of the 50 products, from 1 to 5 ppm in 16 (32%), and lower than 1 ppm in only 6 (12%). Among the 5 imported products, only 1 had a chromium level below 1 ppm and the other 4 (1 from Germany, 3 from the USA) had high levels. Since a most 90% of the detergents and bleaches examined contained chromium levels higher than …

Anionic Detergents as Eluents for Microscale Isolation of Antigen-Specific Serum Immunoglobulins.

The detailed characterization of antigen-specific serum antibodies is hindered by the lack of efficient, gentle isolation methods. In this context, standard column affinity chromatography, although a powerful purification tool, presents practical challenges, including high antigen consumption and elution conditions that risk inducing antibody polyreactivity, while conventional acidic elution often compromises antibody integrity. This study introduces a novel microscale method for isolating specific immunoglobulins using anionic detergents as mild eluents. We employed antigen-functionalized hyd…

Potential of Essential Oil-Based Pesticides and Detergents for Bed Bug Control.

The bed bug, (Cimex lectularius L.), is a difficult pest to control. Prevalence of insecticide resistance among bed bug populations and concerns over human-insecticide exposure has stimulated the development of alternative bed bug control materials. Many essential oil-based pesticides and detergent insecticides targeting bed bugs have been developed in recent years. We evaluated the efficacy of nine essential oil-based products and two detergents using direct spray and residual contact bioassays in the laboratory. Two conventional insecticides, Temprid SC (imidacloprid and β-cyfluthrin) and De…

Immunoreactive proteins of Acanthocheilonema viteae (Nematoda: Filarioidea) adults: solubilization in various detergents.

For optimal solubilization of immunoreactive proteins of filarial parasites, adult worms of Acanthocheilonema viteae were extracted in different detergents including anionic, cationic, nonionic and zwitterionic agents under varying incubation periods. Each preparation was then analysed by SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting using pooled sera from Mastomys natalensis infected with A. viteae. Amongst the detergents used, maximum immunoreactive proteins were exposed by sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), closely followed by sodium deoxycholate (DOC). Nevertheless, a few additional protein bands were recognized…

Elimination of Mycoplasma contaminants from virus stocks by treatment with nonionic detergents.

Five nonionic detergents (Tweens 20, 40, 60, and 80, and Triton WR-1339) were tested for their ability to inactivate four Mycoplasma species which are common contaminants of animal cell cultures. Tween 20 was found to be the most effective, in that a concentration of 2.5 mg/ml completely inactivated cultures of M. hominis, M. hyorhinis, and Acholeplasma laidlawii within 1 hr and a culture of M. orale within 3 hr. The other detergents exhibited various degree of activity against the different mycoplasmas, with Triton WR-1339 being the least effective. The virucidal activity of the detergents wa…
