Vitamin A deficiency is frequent in the tropics. It causes xerophthalamia, which, in severe cases, can develop into corneal ulceration, keratomalacia and blindness and increases morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases in infants and children. Vitamin A deficiency can be reduced by the promotion of a nutrition rich in vitamin A, by fortification of food with vitamin A and by high-dose vitamin A supplementation. Other vitamin deficiency disorders are rare or occur only in limited areas or in disadvantaged people. In refugee camps, scurvy, beriberi, pellagra and xerophthalamia occur. Trave

The nutritional problems of developing countries are conditioned by poverty, near exclusive reliance on plant sources of nutrients, and high rates of infections. Common deficiency diseases include protein-energy malnutrition, nutritional anemias, vitamin A deficiency, iodine deficiency, and possibly others. Population subgroups at particularly high risk are the children and women of poor families. Control of these nutritional diseases requires systematic diagnosis of the existing situation and appropriate intervention strategies such as targeted food and specific micronutrient supplementation,…

The problem of antenatal care in developing countries may be considered from two aspects: (a) areas where antenatal facilities are absent or are inadequate, and (b) areas where antenatal facilities are adequate but for some reasons are not adequately utilized. The solution to the first part of the problem would appear to be simple. The governments concerned should provide the required facilities. This obviously is not an easy task in many areas of the world, especially with the present profound economic depression in many developing countries. BACKGROUND: Since the first successful report of surfactant replacement therapy (SRT) in infants with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), numerous randomized clinical trials have shown that SRT reduces mortality and morbidity in RDS. Surfactant is now a standard therapy for RDS. However, the use of SRT in the developing world has been extremely slow.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this paper is to review the published information regarding the usage and barriers encountered in the use of SRT in developing countries.
METHODS: We reviewed the available literature and also gathered information fr…

Malnutrition, with its 2 constituents of protein-energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies, continues to be a major health burden in developing countries. It is globally the most important risk factor for illness and death, with hundreds of millions of pregnant women and young children particularly affected. Apart from marasmus and kwashiorkor (the 2 forms of protein- energy malnutrition), deficiencies in iron, iodine, vitamin A and zinc are the main manifestations of malnutrition in developing countries. In these communities, a high prevalence of poor diet and infectious disease regu…
