Diaphragmatic eventration in children: laparoscopy versus thoracoscopic plication.

AIM: To determine the best way to perform diaphragmatic plication for diaphragmatic eventration (DE) using minimally invasive surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric cases of DE treated between 2007 and 2012. Thoracoscopic plication (TP) is performed using single-lung ventilation with three 5-mm ports; laparoscopic plication (LP) is performed using three or four 5-mm ports. The choice of technique was determined preferentially by the treating surgeon. RESULTS: There were 20 subjects (13 treated by LP and 7 treated by TP). Etiology of DE was phrenic ne…

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformation in association with diaphragmatic eventration.

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformations are uncommon anomalies, and their association with diaphragmatic eventration is rare. This report presents 2 cases with this association. Embryologically, a simultaneous disturbance in the development of pulmonary vessels and developing esophagotracheal septum may explain the etiopathogenesis of this association. Abnormal budding along the developing foregut tube may lead to foregut cysts. In both cases, the bronchopulmonary foregut malformations were excised, and the diaphragm was repaired. The results of surgery were gratifying in both cases.

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration associated with massive hiatal hernia.

Congenital eventration of the diaphragm is uncommon. Its association with a hiatal hernia has not been reported earlier. We report a case of such an association in a 2-month-old boy who presented with tachypnea aggravated by feeding and recurrent vomiting. Diagnostic uncertainty and a unique course of postoperative recovery complicated by gastric volvulus are described. The patient underwent surgical plication of the right diaphragm, followed by an emergency hiatal repair on the first postoperative day. Timely recognition, and repair of the hiatal hernia averted a fatal complication.

Diaphragmatic eventration as a first sign of Scimitar syndrome.

Diaphragmatic eventration is an anomaly of the diaphragm. In Scimitar syndrome, a curved-shaped anomalous pulmonary venous drainage is seen. Association between these conditions is rare. We present a newborn with diaphragmatic eventration, whose diagnosis of Scimitar syndrome was made after surgical repair. Scimitar syndrome is a congenital disorder often associated with other heart and lungs anomalies. Diagnosis can be fortuitous but with important prognostic features.

Spontaneous rupture of a congenital diaphragmatic eventration in an infant.

Rupture of the diaphragm may be traumatic or spontaneous. A spontaneous rupture occurring in a congenital eventration of the diaphragm is extremely rare. Only one such case has been reported previously. We report a case of a 5-month-old male infant who presented with acute life-threatening respiratory distress secondary to spontaneous rupture of a congenital diaphragmatic eventration.

Organo-axial volvulus of the stomach with diaphragmatic eventration.

Gastric volvulus occurs when the stomach rotates about its longitudinal axis (organo-axial volvulus), or about an axis joining the lesser an … y. The authors present a case of chronic organo-axial volvulus of the stomach secondary to left hemidiaphragmatic eventration with a review of the relevant literature.

Diaphragmatic eventration associated with megacolon: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Diaphragmatic eventration is a rare condition classified as acquired or congenital. Diaphragmatic eventration associated with megacolon is a clinical finding that does not fit the existing principles of treatment. This study aimed to review this association in order to update the knowledge available on diaphragmatic eventration. METHOD: We included articles about diaphragmatic eventration associated with megacolon. The search databases included PubMed, Google Scholar, and African Journal Online, which were added to other articles obtained by manual search. RESULTS: We included 21…

[Thoracoscopic Plication for Congenital Diaphragmatic Eventration in an Adult].

Thoracoscopic plication for congenital diaphragmatic eventration in an adult. Diaphragmatic eventration is known to be abnormal elevation of diaphragm and congenital causes are due to abnormal diaphragm muscle development. Here we report surgical treatment of congenital diaphragmatic eventration. A 45-year-old woman who complained of cough was admitted to our hospital. She had history of cough and was diagnosed as diaphragmatic eventration in childhood. Chest X-ray showed elevated left hemidiaphragm with a bowel gas underneath. Under the diagnosis of congenital eventration of left hemidiaphrag…

Diaphragmatic eventration complicated by gastric volvulus with perforation.

Eventration of the diaphragm with gastric volvulus is uncommon. Gastric perforation in these cases is rare and usually associated with acute gastric volvulus with strangulation. We describe a case of diaphragmatic eventration with chronic gastric volvulus with gastric perforation without strangulation in an elderly man.

Central hypoventilation and diaphragmatic eventration: diagnosis and management.

Congenital central alveolar hypoventilation syndrome (CCAHS) is a disorder of ventilatory control that occurs without neuromuscular blockade or pulmonary disease. It is characterized by a lack of response to habitual respiratory stimulants, especially hypercapnia. In this article, the management of this syndrome by diaphragmatic pacing is discussed. Paralysis of the phrenic nerve in small children usually results from injury during birth or during a cardiothoracic operation and results in eventration of the hemidiaphragm. Alternatively, eventration of the diaphragm may be a congenital conditio

Congenital diaphragmatic eventration complicated with neonatal gastric perforation.

Congenital diaphragm eventration is a rare and usually asymptomatic developmental defect. Neonatal gastric perforation is also a rare but lifethreatening condition. In our knowledge, the association of these two pathologies has been, exceptionally reported. We report a case who illustrates clinical and radiological features of this possible co-morbidity. A full-term male neonate was born from uneventful pregnancy and delivery. The antenatal scan was reported as normal. At birth, clinical exam was normal, no special resuscitation was necessary. The newborn was examined and admitted the 4th day
