The biochemical values of 76 patients with suspected cholecystitis were subjected to discriminant analysis. The final diagnoses, i.e. acute cholecystitis, chronic cholecystitis and non-biliary disease, were used as the grouping variable. Cholescintigraphy identified patients with acute cholecystitis. Routine preoperative biochemical tests were found to be of limited value. Only alkaline phosphatase was of help in predicting common-duct stones, especially in patients with acute cholecystitis. The conclusion is that many biochemical tests presently in common use could as well be dispensed with.

A discriminant function obtained in 1978 to separate patients with glaucomatous visual field loss from those without visual field loss was shown to have a predictive value in ocular hypertensive persons as to the subsequent development of visual field loss in five years. We developed a preoperative assessment system to predict surgical workload in hand-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy (HALDNx) using the normal-based linear discriminant rule (NLDR). A total of 128 cases of left HALDNx performed by a single operator were used as training data. Surgical workload was measured by operative time. From 95 subjects imaged with both speed of sound and attenuation ultrasonic computed tomography (UCT), quantitative analyses are presented on 40 cases where unequivocal correlating clinical diagnoses are available. Using four attenuation and speed of sound parameters from different regions of interest in the breast, a linear discriminator detects cancer with approximately 90% sensitivity and specificity. Having obtained disappointing results in a small medical data set despite the fact that our data seemed to be well suited for induction via ID3, we decided to compare the performance of ID3 to discriminant analysis.
