Resilience Mediates the Association Between Discrimination and Psychological Distress Among Rural, Black Women in South Carolina: A Structural Equation Model.

INTRODUCTION: The marginalization of intersecting racial, gender, and rural identities compounds the structural vulnerabilities (e.g., discrimination, stigma, health disparities) experienced by Black women in South Carolina's rural areas. Discriminatory experiences can deteriorate mental health; however, resilience can potentially reduce the ill effects of discrimination by decreasing associated psychological distress. This study examines the mediating role of resilience in the association between discrimination and psychological distress among rural, Black women in South Carolina in the post-

Perceived workplace discrimination and recovery of people with mental illness: The mediating roles of self-stigma, organizational justice, and psychological capital.

This study aims to examine the impact of perceived workplace discrimination (PWD) on the recovery of people with mental illness (PMI). Grounded in social cognitive theory, it was hypothesized that PWD is associated with poorer clinical, functional, and personal recovery through the underlying mechanisms of self-stigma, organizational justice, and psychological capital (PsyCap). A total of 265 employed PMI in Hong Kong, diagnosed with anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or other psychotic disorders, completed a structured questionnaire assessing PWD, self-stigma, organizationa

Intersectional social control: The roles of incarceration and police discrimination in psychological and HIV-related outcomes for Black sexual minority men.

RATIONALE: Although Black gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men face disproportionately high levels of incarceration and police discrimination, little research examines how these stressors may drive HIV and psychological health inequities among these men. OBJECTIVE: In this study we examined associations between incarceration history, police and law enforcement discrimination, and recent arrest with sexual HIV risk, Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) willingness, and psychological distress among Black sexual minority men. METHOD: Participants were a U.S. national sample of 1172 Black sex

Gender-based discrimination shapes psychological safety and professional identity in clinical settings: a qualitative study of nursing, midwifery, and medical students.

BACKGROUND: Gender-based discrimination remains a persistent structural challenge in health professions education and may shape students' access to learning opportunities, sense of belonging, and professional identity formation. Psychological safety is essential for participation in clinical learning; however, little is known about how gendered experiences are perceived to influence psychological safety, professional identity, and resilience among nursing, midwifery, and medical students. METHODS: This qualitative study explored how nursing, midwifery, and medical students experience gender-b

Associations among discrimination, psychological functioning, and substance use among US Black adults aged 18-28: Moderation by racial attribution and sex.

INTRODUCTION: Discrimination is associated with poor mental health and substance use among Black Americans, but research is needed on mediators and moderators of these relationships. This study tested whether: 1) discrimination is associated with current alcohol, tobacco (cigarette or e-cigarette), and cannabis use among US Black emerging adults; 2) psychological distress (PD) and positive well-being (PW) are mediators of discrimination-substance use relationships; and 3) these relationships are moderated by sex and attributions to discrimination (racial vs. nonracial). METHODS: Using data fr

Social Class-Based Discrimination and Psychological Symptoms Among Socioeconomically Disadvantaged College Students: The Moderated Mediation Role of Stress Mindset and Rumination.

Discrimination as a crucial stressor damages the mental health of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals through increased ruminative thinking. A "stress-is-enhancing" mindset may protect the mental health of socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals under the pressures of perceived discrimination and rumination. This study examined the mediating role of rumination and the moderating role of stress mindset in the relationship between perceived discrimination and psychological symptoms among socioeconomically disadvantaged college students. A total of 919 socioeconomically disadvantaged

Talent Identification in Elite Adolescent Ice Hockey Players: The Discriminant Capacity of Fitness Tests, Skating Performance and Psychological Characteristics.

BACKGROUND: The process of talent identification in ice hockey occurs during middle adolescence when players are selected to participate in "off-season" evaluation camps, where coaches observe their fitness levels and status of development. Recently, the Quebec ice hockey federation opted for a holistic approach by evaluating players based on three criteria: (1) fitness, (2) skating abilities and (3) personality traits and psychological assets. This study aimed to analyze the discriminant validity of a multi-dimensional talent identification testing protocol in competitive ice hockey. METHOD:

Screeners vs. Non-screeners for Colorectal Cancer among People over 50 Years of Age: Factual and Psychological Discriminants.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most frequent form of cancer worldwide, and approximately one third of cases have a positive family history of CRC or associated cancers. Colonoscopy is one of the most effective methods of screening for CRC. Uptake of colonoscopy is suboptimal, and many countries lack a national screening programme. Our study aims at exploring and ranking several factual and psychological variables according to their accuracy in discriminating between screeners and non-screeners for CRC in a convenience sample of people over 50 years of age. METHODS:

Exploring discrimination, social acceptance, and its impact on the psychological well-being of older men who have sex with men: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The exploration of discrimination, social acceptance, and their impact on the psychological well-being of older men who have sex with men (MSM) is a critical area of study within the broader field of LGBTQ+ research. This demographic, comprising individuals who identify as both male and homosexual and are aged in the older spectrum of the population, faces unique challenges that intersect age, sexual orientation, and societal attitudes. Objectives This study aimed to explore the relationship between social acceptance and isolation with discrimination and the impact on the psycholog

Psychological distress mediates the association between COVID-19-related discrimination and subsequent PTSD symptom severity in healthcare workers: a two-year follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Past research has suggested a cross-sectional association between COVID-19-related discrimination and PTSD symptom severity. However, no cohort study has examined the longitudinal association that better supports causal interpretation. Also, even if such an association genuinely exists, the specific pathway remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a two-year follow-up study, obtaining data from healthcare workers in a hospital setting. We first evaluated how COVID-19-related discrimination in 2021 was associated with subsequent PTSD symptom severity in 2023. Thereafter, we conducted

Association between perceived discrimination and depressive symptoms among male and female mining workers in Chile: a sex-stratified analysis and the mediating role of psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Workplace discrimination is a recognised social determinant of mental health. However, evidence regarding its impact in highly masculinised and demanding industries, such as mining, remains limited, particularly in Latin America. This study aimed to estimate the association between perceived and observed workplace discrimination and depressive symptoms among mining workers in Chile, and to evaluate the mediating role of psychological distress. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 712 employees from a large-scale mining company, including both principal and subcontr

Further evidence regarding the convergent and discriminant validity of Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) scores in the preoperative psychological evaluation of patients seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery.

BACKGROUND: Psychological testing is used in some preoperative psychological evaluations of patients seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) contains new norms, updated item content, and new scales such as Eating Concerns and Impulsivity, which are relevant to the assessment of patients seeking metabolic and bariatric surgery. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this investigation was to establish convergent and discriminant properties of the MMPI-3 scales with relevant clinical interview and medical record data from electronic medical records.

Distinct early-life mechanisms of quantity discrimination in domestic chicks.

In research on animal numerical cognition, newly hatched domestic chicks have been shown to rely on distinct strategies when confronted with quantitative choices. In some conditions, such as after imprinting on a specific set of objects, chicks preferentially approach the larger set of familiar items, indicating sensitivity to magnitude. In other conditions, however, their responses are governed not by magnitude per se, but by the degree of similarity between the test objects and a previously experienced set, where similarity is defined in terms of conformity to specific perceptual constraints

Cognitive strategies involved in the discrimination of geometric angles.

Participants were trained and tested on their ability to discriminate among geometric angles presented to them as freestanding three-dimensional objects located within a larger experimental room. Three different angle sizes were used during training and participants were grouped based on their assigned training angle (110°, 135° or 160° angle), which they learned to discriminate from the remaining two angles. Following a learning phase, participants experienced test trials in which their training angle was paired with a novel test angle, and they made a choice between the two angles. Participa

The mediating role of psychological distress in the association between migration experiences and stigma and coping strategies: a cross-sectional study on Ethiopian migrant returnees.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopian migrants to the Middle East and South Africa are exposed to dangerous traveling and working conditions and their experiences are mostly tragic. They are unwelcomed not only by the situation in the destination but also by the community at home which is an important indicator of stigma and discrimination. However, there is lack of evidence on how psychological distress is associated with migration experiences, stigma and coping strategies. Therefore, it was aimed to determine the mediating effect of psychological distress in the association between migration experiences and
