Interventions for pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: With the legalization of new forms of gambling there are increasing numbers of individuals who appear to have gambling related problems and who are seeking help. The individual and societal consequences are significant. Pathological gambling can result in the gambler jeopardizing or losing a significant relationship or job and committing criminal offences. Pathological gamblers may develop general medical conditions associated with stress. Increased rates have been reported for mood disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, substance abuse or dependence. There is a high

Impulsive conditions in Parkinson's disease: A pharmacosurveillance-supported list.

BACKGROUND: "Impulse Control Disorders" are behavioral conditions (e.g., gambling, hypersexuality), which are increasingly reported as reactions to dopamine agonists in Parkinson's disease. The Questionnaire for Impulsive-Compulsive Disorders in Parkinson's disease focuses only on 6 behaviors. Nonetheless, impulsivity could affect the entire range of human practices. Because of their heterogeneity and undefined boundaries, it is not clear what conditions should be considered as Impulse Control Disorders. This results in poorly standardized scientific literature and underdiagnosis. OBJECTIVE:

Impulsivities and addictions: a multidimensional integrative framework informing assessment and interventions for substance use disorders.

Impulse control is becoming a critical survival skill for the twenty-first century. Impulsivity is implicated in virtually all externalizing behaviours and disorders, and figures prominently in the aetiology and long-term sequelae of substance use disorders (SUDs). Despite its robust clinical and predictive validity, the study of impulsivity is complicated by its multidimensional nature, characterized by a variety of trait-like personality dimensions, as well as by more state-dependent neurocognitive dimensions, with variable convergence across measures. This review provides a hierarchical fra

The self-regulation of automatic associations and behavioral impulses.

The distinction between automatic processes and controlled processes is a central organizational theme across areas of psychology. However, this dichotomy conceals important differences among qualitatively different processes that independently contribute to ongoing behavior. The Quadruple process model is a multinomial model that provides quantitative estimates of 4 distinct processes in a single task: the likelihood that an automatic response tendency is activated; the likelihood that a contextually appropriate response can be determined; the likelihood that automatic response tendencies are

Impulse control in Parkinson's disease: Distinct effects between action and choice.

Aside from typical motor symptoms, impulse control issues related to engaging in actions or decision-making can manifest in Parkinson's disease (PD). The lack of direct comparisons between impulsive action and impulsive choice domains hinders a comprehensive understanding of impaired impulse control in this population. Therefore, the current review integrates findings across behavioural measures of impulsive action and choice in PD samples, both on and off dopaminergic medication. The qualitative review of studies revealed a distinction between the two impulsivity domains in the context of PD.

Neurobehavioral and self-awareness changes after traumatic brain injury: Towards new multidimensional approaches.

Neurobehavioral and self-awareness changes are frequently observed following traumatic brain injury (TBI). These disturbances have been related to negative consequences on functional outcomes, caregiver distress and social reintegration, representing therefore a challenge for clinical research. Some studies have recently been conducted to specifically explore apathetic and impulsive manifestations, as well as self-awareness impairments in patients with TBI. These findings underlined the heterogeneity of clinical manifestations for each behavioral disturbance and the diversity of psychological

Neural correlates of risky decision making in Parkinson's disease patients with impulse control disorders.

Some patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience impulse control disorders (ICDs), characterized by deficient voluntary control over impulses, drives, or temptations regarding excessive hedonic behavior. The present study aimed to better understand the neural basis of impulsive, risky decision making in PD patients with ICDs by disentangling potential dysfunctions in decision and outcome mechanisms. We collected fMRI data from 20 patients with ICDs and 28 without ICDs performing an information gathering task. Patients viewed sequences of bead colors drawn from hidden urns and were instru

Pathological gambling: an impulse control disorder? Measurement of impulsivity using neurocognitive tests.

Pathological gambling is classified in the DSM-IV-TR (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) and in the ICD-10 (International Classification of Disease) as an impulse control disorder. The association between impulsivity and pathological gambling remains a matter of debate: some researchers find high levels of impulsivity within pathological gamblers, others report no difference compared to controls, and yet others even suggest that it is lower. In this review we examine the relationship between pathological gambling and impulsivity assessed by various neurocognitive tests. The

A systematic review of the etiology and neurobiology of intermittent explosive disorder.

Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is characterized by repeated inability to control aggressive impulses. Although the etiology and neurobiology of impulsive anger and impulse control disorders have been reviewed, no systematic review on these aspects has been published for IED specifically. We conducted a systematic search in seven electronic databases for publications about IED, screened by two authors, and retained twenty-four studies for the review. Our findings highlight a multifactorial etiology and neurobiology of IED, emphasizing the role of the amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex in

Should pathological gambling be considered an addictive disorder?

Although pathological gambling is a relatively common disorder, there are only limited data available about the validity of its diagnosis as an impulse control disorder. Interestingly, there is no single conceptual widely accepted model that adequately accounts for the multiple biological, psychological and ecological variables contributing to the development of pathological gambling. In this paper, the authors demonstrate aspects of addictive behavior of pathological gambling. It is suggested that despite conceptual difficulties associated with the variable of self-control, contemporary resea

[Kleptomania: clinical and legal aspects].

Kleptomania is characterized by repetitive and irresistible impulses to steal objects, with growing excitement before, and relief after the incidents. The thefts are not planned, carried out without confidants and regarded as illegal by the offenders who often feel guilty for it. The objects are stolen not for monetary gain or personal use, but are mostly discarded, given away or hoarded. Though there is a debate going on for more than 100 years, the nosological position of kleptomania remains unclear. On the one hand the clinical picture is observed as an isolated disorder in otherwise health

[Gambling disorder and alcohol use disorder -- similarities and differences].

Gambling disorder has been listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) for more than three decades. During this time, its diagnostic set of criteria has gone through significant changes. In the DSM-5, gambling disorder has been moved from Disruptive, Impulse-Control and Conduct Disorders to Substance- Related and Addictive Disorders, which acknowledges and expresses that gambling disorder has similar features compared to substance related disorders. The aim of the present review is to reveal the reasons behind this category replacement, and to examine the similari

Hidden storms within: Psychiatric comorbidity in intermittent explosive disorder: A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is characterised by sudden, disproportionate outbursts of aggression. High rates of psychiatric comorbidity suggest that IED represents a complex transdiagnostic profile, yet its comorbidity profile has not yet been synthesised quantitatively. OBJECTIVE: This meta-analysis aimed to (1) estimate the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities among individuals with IED, (2) quantify the odds ratios for these comorbidities relative to non-IED populations and (3) identify contextual and methodological factors that may shape the strength and nature of
