Attitudes and knowledge about drinking: relationships with drinking behavior among pregnant teenagers.

Data were collected on the drinking behavior of 415 pregnant adolescents from 1990 to 1994. The relationships between knowledge and attitudes about drinking and drinking behavior were examined. Knowledge about drinking was not related to average daily volume of alcohol before or during pregnancy. Those with specific knowledge about fetal alcohol effects drank less before pregnancy, and in the first trimester, and were also less likely to drink to intoxication. Among drinkers, general knowledge about drinking was significantly related to a decrease in drinking between pre-pregnancy and first tr…

Drinking in college: consumption patterns, problems, sex differences and legal drinking age.

Data from 606 (75.8%) undergraduate respondents drawn from a random sample (N = 800) at Rutgers University demonstrate that, although fewer college students may be drinking when compared to some previous estimates, there is still a large number of heavy drinkers. In addition, traditional demographic variables continue to predict alcohol consumption levels. Students also report a similar variety of drinking related problems as in previous college drinking studies. Women constitute half as many heavy drinkers as men, but report an equal amount of alcohol-related problems in this sample. When con…

Understanding hazardous drinking: The role of anxiety sensitivity and mediating drinking motives.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety sensitivity (AS)-the tendency to fear anxiety-related sensations-has been consistently associated with risky drinking, yet the motivational mechanisms underlying this link remain unclear. This study examined whether specific drinking motives (DMs) mediate the association between AS and hazardous drinking, and explored the moderating effects of age and gender. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional, survey-based design was used. METHODS: Data were collected through an anonymous online questionnaire completed by 372 adults (69 % women; mean age = 25.3 years), including the Alcohol…

Algae impacted drinking water: Does switching to chloramination produce safer drinking water?

Harmful algal (cyanobacterial) blooms (HABs) are increasing throughout the world. HABs can be a direct source of toxins in freshwater sources, and associated algal organic matter (AOM) can act as precursors for the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water. This study investigated the impacts of algae on DBP formation using treatment with chloramine, which has become a popular disinfectant in the U.S. and in several other countries because it can significantly lower the levels of regulated DBPs formed. Controlled laboratory chloraminations were conducted using live field-c…

Drinking cholera: salinity levels and palatability of drinking water in coastal Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the salinity levels of common water sources in coastal Bangladesh and explore perceptions of water palatability among the local population to investigate the plausibility of linking cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh with ingestion of saline-rich cholera-infected river water. METHODS: Hundred participants took part in a taste-testing experiment of water with varying levels of salinity. Salinity measurements were taken of both drinking and non-drinking water sources. Informal group discussions were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of water sources and water uses.…

Drinking through the pain.

A feature of abusive alcohol drinking has been modeled successfully in experiments with rats. The experiments show that changes in NMDA signaling in specific neural circuits accompany the transition to aversion-resistant drinking.

Drinking water and cancer.

Epidemiologic evidence on the relation between contaminants in drinking water and cancer is reviewed. The reviewed studies cover exposure to: disinfection byproducts; nitrate; arsenic and other metals; volatiles and contaminants from hazardous waste sites; asbestiform fibers; radionuclides; and fluoride. Most investigations are ecologic, with some confirmation of elevated risk from individual-based studies. In the case of waterborne arsenic, and possibly chlorination byproducts, there is a consistent but small body of epidemiologic evidence of an association with one or more types of cancer. N…

[Drinking water and parasites].

Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, Cryptosporidium parvum, Isospora belli, Balantidium coli, and Microsporidia spp. are cosmopolitan parasites. They often cause diarrheal diseases. The waterborn transmission of all these parasites is possible (41). Surface water supplies used for drinking water are potential sources of contamination. Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium spp. have received great attention in industrialized countries during the last years because they are the etiological agents of waterborne diseases. The life cycles of Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium are described with …

Genotoxicity of drinking waters.

Drinking waters in many countries have been shown to contain non-volatile polar mutagenic compounds as well as trihalomethanes. Their nature is uncertain, but one compound, a chlorinated furanone (3-chloro-4-(dichloro-methyl)-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone;MX) seems to be responsible for one third to over one half of the mutagenicity. Its concentration seems to correlate rather well also with the total bacterial mutagenicity. Animal toxicity studies are being used to evaluate the possible carcinogenicity risk of this compound as a first stage in complete risk assessment of the whole complex mixture.…

Fatal compulsive water drinking.

In two cases of psychogenic polydipsia, water intoxication developed and contributed to the patient's death. The treatment of the patient with psychogenic polydipsia has been based on the presumed reversibility of the condition. Treatment of such patients must be reconsidered in light of these deaths.

Problem drinking in adolescence.

Diagnostic criteria for the early stages of alcoholism are unclearmaccordingly, especially in young problem drinkers, emphasis should be on symptomatic treatment and shifting environmental support away from drinking. Alcohol use is frequently a precursor and a corollary of other drug use. Active intervention by the family physician can be very effective. Starting at age 15, the medical history should include a survey of alcohol consumption.

Making decisions one drink at a time and the "just one drink" effect: A fuzzy-trace theory model of harmful drinking.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the decision factors that drive harmful alcohol use among young adults is of practical and theoretical importance. We apply fuzzy-trace theory (FTT) to investigate a potential danger that may arise from the arguably correct notion that a single drink carries no meaningful risk. Decisions that are mentally represented as one drink at a time could contribute to excessive drinking. METHODS: College students (N = 351) made a series of decisions to take or decline eight hypothetical drinks presented one at a time. Outcome measures included each decision, recent alcohol co…

Botulism from drinking pruno.

Foodborne botulism occurred among inmates at 2 prisons in California in 2004 and 2005. In the first outbreak, 4 inmates were hospitalized, 2 of whom required intubation. In the second event, 1 inmate required intubation. Pruno, an alcoholic drink made illicitly in prisons, was the novel vehicle for these cases.
