Sports related to drowning.

Aquatic sports are included in the top list of risky practices as the environment per se carries a possibility of death by drowning if not rescued in time. Not only are aquatic sports related to a high risk of death, but also all sports practiced on the water, over the water and on ice. Whatever the reason a person is in the water, drowning carries a higher possibility of death if the individual is unable to cope with the water situation, which may simply be caused by an inability to stay afloat and get out of the water or by an injury or disease that may lead to physical inability or unconsci…

Haematic silicon in drowning.

The aim of this paper was to evaluate silicon (Si) concentration in human whole ventricular blood as a further potential chemical marker in the diagnosis of drowning. We employed an acidic digestion for the extraction of soluble Si, and an alkaline digestion for the determination of total Si, including particulate matter, both arising from drowning medium. 29 suspected drowning situations, 24 in fresh water (Fw) and 5 in seawater (Sw), were examined. The difference in Si concentration between the left and right ventricular blood (Si ΔL-R) was measured and alkaline Si ΔL-R seems, indeed, a pote…

[Drowning in pediatric patients].

OBJECTIVE: Immersion accidents are still an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children. We performed a retrospective study to identify the prognostic factors associated with outcome in children who experience near-drowning, which could serve to guide decision-making. Our data were compared with other published data. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of children treated for near-drowning in our hospital from January 1995 to April 2003 were reviewed. The data analyzed referred to the patient, the accident, the patient's clinical status in the emergency unit, the unit to whic…

Child abuse by drowning.

Drowning as a form of subtle fatal child abuse is difficult to distinguish from accidental immersion or from sudden unexpected natural death when the circumstances of immersion are concealed. Homicidal drownings are unwitnessed, usually occurring in the home, and the victims are young, either infants or toddlers. Accidental drownings are more likely to involve toddlers or older children in public areas such as swimming pools, drainage ditches, lakes, and rivers. This is especially true in rural areas. In cities, bathtubs remain a major site of accidental childhood drownings. Perpetrators of de…

Spleen findings in drowning.

A retrospective study of spleen findings in 42 victims of drowning and a comparison group of 42 cases of asphyxiation due to other causes (hanging, ligature strangulation and manual strangulation), that were matched for sex, age, body weight and build, was performed. Significantly smaller spleen weights (P < 0.05), spleen weight:body weight ratios (P < 0.01) and spleen weight:liver weight ratios (P < 0.01) were found in the victims of drowning. The difference in weight was approximately 18%. A significant negative correlation between spleen weight and blood alcohol concentration was found in t…

[Physiopathology of accidental drowning].

The first phase of accidental drowning begins with asphyxia, due to either laryngospasm (10-15 percent of cases) or water aspiration. The second phase is characterized by water and electrolyte changes in the blood. The physiopathological modifications caused by drowning in fresh water differ from those of drowning in sea water. The hypotonic fresh water quickly diffuses in the bloodstream. The consequences are, in many cases, hypervolemia with pulmonary edema, hemolysis, hyperkalemia with risk of ventricular fibrillation, diminution of hemoglobin, and a relative decrease in plasma concentratio…

The Drowning Index: implementation in drowning, mechanical asphyxia, and acute myocardial infarct cases.

Drowning is a diagnosis of exclusion based on circumstantial and autopsy correlation. Sugimura proposed a threshold value of 14.1 for the Drowning Index (DI), the ratio of lung and pleural fluid to spleen weight, as a surrogate marker to diagnose drowning. We questioned the use of DI in diagnosing drowning. We compared DI between three groups--drowning, mechanical asphyxia, and myocardial infarct--seen at Broward MEO from 2008 to 2009. Only 9.4% of 53 drownings exceeded the DI threshold of 14.1, while 30% of 10 mechanical asphyxias and 40% of 10 myocardial infarcts had DI >14.1. Sensitivity fo…

Risk factors for drowning and near-drowning among children in Hillsborough County, Florida.

The authors obtained data from 700 households in Hillsborough County, FL, in a telephone random survey to determine risk factors for incidents of drowning and near-drowning among children in the county. The survey was conducted from August through December 1991. A combination of forced-choice and open-ended questions was used to assess adults' drowning-related knowledge, attitudes, and prevention behaviors, as well as the incidence of and the circumstances surrounding drowning and near-drowning among children who lived in those households. The results showed that although most respondents had …

[Resuscitation of a drowned person].

Approximately 170 Finns drown annually. In drowning fluid gets into the victim's respiratory passages so that breathing of air is prevented. The victim may be sunken into the fluid completely or only partially. As a consequence of the sinking, the victim will usually first hold his/her breath, until a laryngeal spasm develops. At this stage, the victim usually swallows large amounts of water. This is followed by loss of consciousness, decreased heart rate and cardiac arrest resulting from hypoxia. The cornerstone of resuscitation of a drowned person is correction of hypoxia.

Prevention and Treatment of Drowning.

Nearly 4,000 drowning deaths occur annually in the United States, with drowning representing the most common injury-related cause of death in children one to four years of age. Drowning is a process that runs the spectrum from brief entry of liquid into the airways with subsequent clearance and only minor temporary injury, to the prolonged presence of fluid in the lungs leading to lung dysfunction, hypoxia, neurologic and cardiac abnormalities, and death. The World Health Organization has defined drowning as "the process of experiencing respiratory impairment from submersion/immersion in liqui…

A quantitative comparison analysis of diatoms in the lung tissues and the drowning medium as an indicator of drowning.

The presence of diatoms in the lung tissues, internal organs and bone marrow is considered as the supportive evidence in the diagnosis of death by drowning. Generally, the diatoms detected in the lung tissues are regarded as insignificant since these diatoms can be detected in the lung tissues of the postmortem immersion bodies. In this study, we analyzed the relationships between the numbers of the diatoms in the lung tissues and the drowning medium. We made a comparison analysis between the diatoms in the lung tissues and the drowning medium using the ratio of diatom numbers in both samples …

"Not waving, drowning". Asphyxia and torture: the myth of simulated drowning and other forms of torture.

The article will give a brief introduction to what we understand by the term Asphyxiation. The main focus will then turn to how Asphyxiation … duced and the notion will be explored that during socalled 'enhanced interrogation' asphyxiation or drowning can be "simulated."

Clinical, laboratory and X-ray findings of drowning and near-drowning in the Gulf of Aqaba.

Clinical, laboratory and X-ray findings in 34 victims of submersion are presented. Five people died and 29 survived (age range 12-60 years). Severe hypoxia was found in all patients (mean PO2 of 58 mmHg with some oxygen support). Arterial blood gas analysis showed significant metabolic acidosis in 19 patients and significant respiratory acidosis in 15 patients. Pulmonary oedema was the most common X-ray finding. Fourteen patients were put on mechanical ventilation on the basis of their clinical picture and blood gases analysis. Clinical and laboratory data are very similar to those reported in

Freshwater drowning and near-drowning accidents involving children: a five-year total population study.

A large total population study of childhood fresh water immersion accidents is reported. The study was undertaken in the City of Brisbane over the five-year period 1971 to 1975 inclusive, and 111 fresh water immersion accidents involving children were studied and analysed. The childhood fresh water immersion accident rate, including drowning and near-drownings, of 10-43 per year per 100,000 at risk (fatality rate of 5-17) is the highest reported. If an unsupervised child gets into difficulties in fresh water and loses consciousness he has a 50% chance of dying. The immersion accident rate has …

Near drowning in cold water.

Drowning and near drowning is a common cause of accidental death all over the world; specially in road traffic accidents over bridges, swimming pool and boat tragedies. Cold water drowning resulting in hypothermia can lead to instant death before actual drowning. Five cases of near drowning (ND) in cold water, who presented with varied clinical picture like coma with decerebrate rigidity and fixed dilated pupils, hypertension with coma and delayed pulmonary oedema (Secondary drowning) are reported. Energetic management with continuous positive airway pressure was very rewarding in all patients…
