Drug fever is a little known side effect and should be considered as a differential diagnosis in the presence of fever. Its early recognition is important to avoid unnecessary investigations. Among the 70 most prescribed drugs in primary care in Switzerland, 8 have been linked to drug fever : amoxicillin, atorvastatin, rosuvastatin, esomeprazole, pantoprazole, rivaroxaban, salbutamol and trazodone. There are no specific criterias to distinguish a drug-induced fever. The diagnosis is confirmed with a positive rechallenge test. If a drug fever is suspected, it is recommended to stop the offendin…

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tuberculosis is a major global health problem. However, anti-tuberculosis drug treatment has many adverse effects, such as drug-caused fever. The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical features and treatments of anti-tuberculosis drugs-induced fever.
METHODS: A total of 78 inpatients and outpatients with pulmonary tuberculosis accompanied by drug fever during the anti-tuberculosis treatment were analysed retrospectively from April 2006 to March 2013.
RESULTS: Among the anti-tuberculosis drugs that caused the drug fever, rifampicin was the most common one, foll…

This case report describes a sternoclavicular infection in an IV drug user. The history and physical exam suggested an abscess. In the emergency department (ED) the patient refused incision and drainage but did consent to simple needle aspiration. Subsequent culture of the aspirate revealed Pseudomonas aeruginosa. He was admitted for IV antibiotics. After admission, a bone scan suggested the presence of osteomyelitis. The patient refused operative débridement, but ultimately did consent to bedside incision and drainage. By day five, the fever had resolved and the patient signed out AMA. He was

Cases of extensively drug-resistant (XDR) typhoid fever have been reported in the United States among patients who did not travel internationally. Clinicians should consider if and where the patient traveled when selecting empiric treatment for typhoid fever. XDR typhoid fever should be treated with a carbapenem, azithromycin, or both.

In 28 children, with bacteriologically and/or serologically diagnosed typhoid fever treated at CMH, Rawalpindi in 2003, first one of the three recommended drugs (viz. chloramphenicol, amoxycillin or co-trimoxazole) was given for 7 days for defervescence to occur. In those who failed to respond a second trial of therapy with one of the other two drugs was initiated, after excluding the first drug. A second failure of therapy was taken as an indication to use pefloxacin singly. Finally, 18 (64.3%) cases responded to chloramphenicol or amoxycillin or co-trimoxazole. Pefloxacin was used in 10 (35.

We report the first ever report of multiple drug resistant salmonella typhi epidemic from Asia. The outbreak started in April 1988 and virtually ended by June 1988. The outbreak occurred in Baramullah town of Kashmir valley. In an epidemiological survey 230 cases were diagnosed as enteric fever. 46 cases (20%) were culture positive. A very rare multiple drug resistant strain of S. typhi was identified as phage type biotype II untypeable (UVS2). The strain was sensitive to Norfloxacin. This outbreak of S. typhi has many similarities with Mexico epidemic. Ingestion of contaminated water seems to

The use of intramuscular injections of streptomycin sulfate for the ablation of vestibular function in patients with bilateral Meniere's disease is well established. Although hypersensitivity reactions to streptomycin are documented, frank drug fevers are rare. Our patient, with no previous history of drug allergies, was treated with parenteral streptomycin for disabling bilateral Meniere's disease. The patient's hospital course was complicated by severe hypotension and spiking fevers, which were temporally related to the streptomycin injections, and which resolved on cessation of the drug the…

During 1979 4 patients were observed who developed short episodes of fever as high as 104 degrees F after oral intake of 25--100 mg nomifensine (Alival). In all four cases a clear fever spike was produced by reexposure to the drug. The reaction time was 4--6 hours. this drug-induced fever appeared initially 2--4 weeks after the commencement of Alival therapy. No other cause for the fever was identifiable. In one patient an allergic alveolitis was suspected to be a further reaction. In another patient a concomitant granulomatous hepatitis was possibly also due to this drug. It is probable that

Although proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are generally well tolerated, with most adverse effects being minor and self-limiting, there are singular reports on hypersensitivity immune reactions triggered by a PPI or its metabolites. Here we report a case of acute drug-induced fever with leukocytosis and a transient increase in CRP due to pantoprazole. This was apparently an idiosyncratic reaction (inflammatory fever), showing no cross-sensitivity towards esomeprazole.

Propafenone is an antiarrhythmic drug used in the treatment of life-threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Adverse reactions necessitating discontinuation of the medication are common. Propafenone-induced drug fever has not been definitively proven. We present a case report of drug fever secondary to propafenone, confirmed with rechallenge.

RATIONALE: The application of Xingnaojing injection is widespread; however, drug-induced fever associated with this medication is challenging to diagnose. Previous literature rarely reports cases of drug-induced fever resulting from the use of Xingnaojing injection.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 46-year-old male patient, who underwent surgery for cerebral hemorrhage, presented with fever. The condition is considered to be drug fever induced by the administration of Xingnaojing.
DIAGNOSES: Considering the potential for drug fever associated with the administration of Xingnaojing injection.
