The aim of the study was to estimate the frequency of dry eye syndrome and to analyze the risk factors of this disease. We examined a group of 140 patients aged 24-93, suffering from dry eye syndrome. The patients were treated in the Ophthalmology Clinic in Lublin in 1999-2001. A larger number of dry eye syndrome cases was identified in female patients, especially aged over 50 (80% of female and 20% of male). Average age female cases was 67.5 and male 58.5. OBJECTIVE: To examine risk factors for the prevalence of dry eye syndrome in a population-based cohort.
METHODS: The prevalence of dry eye was determined by history at the second examination (1993-1995) of the Beaver Dam Eye Study cohort (N = 3722).
RESULTS: The cohort was aged 48 to 91 years (mean +/- SD, 65 +/- 10 years) and 43% male. The overall prevalence of dry eye was 14.4%. Prevalence varied from 8.4% in subjects younger than 60 years to 19. 0% in those older than 80 years (P<.001 for test of trend). Ophthalmic state of 18 women patients between 40 and 69 years of age with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) was studied. Tear secretion was studied by Schirmer I., break up time and conjunctival and corneal bengal rose staining tests. In 15 cases serious degree of keratoconjunctivitis sicca has been revealed. CD25 deficiency (Interleukin-2 receptor alpha deficiency) is a rare subtype of combined B- and T-cell immunodeficiency. Recurrent infections and lymphocyte infiltration of multiple tissues are the main clinical presentations. Only four patients have been reported in whom ophthalmological findings were not described. Dry eye (DE) is a chronic ocular condition with high prevalence and morbidity. It has a complex pathophysiology and is multifactorial in nature. Dry eye syndrome and blepharitis are diseases that affect many patients from different age groups. There is not only a great variability in the manifestation between patients but they also show a mixture of associated symptoms. Thus, very different ocular and systemic diseases have to be included in the differential diagnosis of a primary dry eye disorder. This article provides a structured overview of these differential diagnoses and their characteristic appearance as well as the pitfalls and therapeutic options.
