BACKGROUND: The Ectodermal Dysplasias (ED) are a group of uncommon genetic disorders characterized by deficient development of tissues derived from ectoderm and mesoderm. Abnormalities of the respiratory epithelium prevent normal mucociliary function. We explored the prevalence and severity of sinonasal features in affected individuals.
METHODS: Thirty-four subjects with ED were evaluated. A focused history and thorough nasal examination including flexible nasopharyngoscopy were performed. Patients and caregivers rated the severity of rhinologic symptoms with a standard scale. Standardized sm…

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome is a rare congenital anomaly that affects tissues of mesodermal and ectodermal origin. Musculoskeletal involvement frequently requires orthopedic intervention. The authors present a review of the literature pertaining to this rare syndrome as well as a case report of a female patient who exhibited the complete clinical triad. A description of the surgical management of her condition is also presented.

The 'problem' of ectodermal dysplasia is discussed in conjunction with a case report and a review of the literature. In a range of hereditary disorders all ectodermal structures can be effected in a variable way: reduction of the amount of hair, sweat glands and sebaceous glands, and a complete or partial anodontia of the deciduous and permanent dentition with malformation of the erupted teeth.

The purpose of this report is to describe a familial observation of EEC syndrome (ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, cleft palate). The two cases, a boy and his mother, had no cleft palate but the teeth malformations were typical of this affection. The variability of the syndrome is discussed.

The frequent occurrence of the clinical picture of ectodermal dysplasia in the family P. is described. The differences between subjects in symptomatology are discussed in detail. The author's experience speaks well for a great variability of the hereditary mode of this disease. Furthermore, advice is given on the detection and regular ambulatory supervision by the stomatologist.

The E. A. D. is a genodermatosis characterised by absence or important diminuation of sweat glands. The study of 3 children of different families allows us to identify the diagnostic elements: typical facial signs, anhidrosis, rarity of teeth "buds", abnormalities of dermatoglyphes. This diagnosis must be established early, to protect the newborn from accidents of overheating caused by perspiration insufficiency. The sweat glands are not affected alone: exocrine glands also, explaining the fragility of the upper respiratory tract in such patients. The teeth abnormalities are important and need

Hereditary hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is typically inherited as an X-linked recessive trait, characterized by deformity of at least two or more of the ectodermal structures - hair, teeth, nails and sweat glands. Two cases of hereditary HED involving identical male twins, is being documented for the rarity of its occurrence with special attention given to genetics, pathophysiology, clinical, intraoral manifestations and to the methods to improve the masticatory function, the facial esthetics and psychology of patients affected by this disease.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a rare hereditary disorder with a characteristic physiognomy. It is a genetic disorder affecting the development or function of the teeth, hair, nails and sweat glands. Depending on the particular syndrome ectodermal dysplasia can also affect the skin, the lens or retina of the eye, parts of the inner ear, the development of fingers and toes, the nerves and other parts of the body. Each syndrome usually involves a different combination of symptoms, which can range from mild to severe. The history and lessons learned from hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) may serve…

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disease characterized by dysplasia of tissues of ectodermal origin. The incidence of ectodermal dysplasia is rare (1 in 100,000 birth). This case report discusses the features, classification and prosthetic treatment plan (upper partial denture and lower complete denture for upper partial and lower complete edentulous arches respectively). This treatment plan would be able to provide psychological and functional boost to the sufferer.

Anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a congenital, generally X-linked dermatosis that associates facial dysmorphy, short stature, and severe blepharitis. The anomalies of the skin are epidermic abnormalities; reduction of the glands of the derm, particularly the sweat glands, explaining the hypohidrosis; onychodysplasia; trichodysplasia; and abnormal dentition. The ophthalmologic manifestations are palpebral anomalies with a reduction in or an absence of Meibomian glands, dysfunction of the Moll and Zeis glands, leading to chronic squamous blepharitis and lacrimal punctal atresia. These anomalie…

OBJECTIVES: To determine the range and prevalence of otologic disorders in patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) and provide a general review of its multiple otolaryngological manifestations.
DESIGN: Case series.
SETTING: Ectodermal dysplasia family conference.
PATIENTS: Sixty-nine individuals with ED were evaluated. The average age was 11 years (range, 1-56 years). Most were male patients (44 [64%]), and most had Christ-Siemens-Touraine syndrome/hypohidrotic ED (42 [61%]), with the remaining having Hay-Wells, Clouston, and ectrodactyly ED clefting syndromes and unclassified types of ED.
