Management of ectopia lentis in children.

The medical management of ectopia lentis involves refractive correction as well as co-management of any associated systemic disease. Surgical management remains a challenge, as inherent defects in the lens capsule make implantation of an intraocular lens (IOL) difficult. Multiple visual rehabilitative measures are available such as aphakic contact lenses or spectacles, capsular bag fixation with implantation of in-the-bag IOL, iris-fixated, and scleral-fixated IOL. It depends on the surgeon's expertise and discretion whether the capsular bag needs to be preserved or compromised.

Management of ectopia lentis in children.

Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria, trauma, and simple ectopia lentis are the most common causes of pediatric lens subluxation. Many patients are best treated with a careful refraction of the phakic or aphakic pupillary axis. For those patients not achieving satisfactory refractive results, endocapsular lensectomy using modern automated vitreous cutting devices is relatively safe and successful. Given the lack of postoperative capsular support and our current level of intraocular lens technology, postoperative optical correction is most safely achieved with aphakic contact lenses or spectacles.

New Management Strategies for Ectopia Lentis.

Ectopia lentis refers to displacement of the crystalline lens in the setting of various systemic and metabolic disorders. A literature review was conducted to investigate the management of non-traumatic ectopia lentis in the pediatric population, particularly focusing on surgical intervention. Both limbal and pars plana approaches for lensectomy are well established in the literature. Surgical options for intraocular lens implantation in pediatric eyes with ectopia lentis include anterior chamber intraocular lenses and iris-fixated or scleral-fixated posterior chamber intraocular lenses. Recen…

[Ectopia lentis et pupillae: case report].

The main purpose of this report is to describe a case of ectopia lentis et pupillae syndrome, highlighting the secondary ocular complications and their differential diagnoses. A 27-year-old man presented with complaint of low visual acuity. No evidence of the syndrome was found at presentation. The results of supplementary tests were normal. On ophthalmologic examination, visual acuity was finger count at 2 meters in the right eye and finger count at 1 meter in the left eye. Exotropia of 25 dioptrics. Corneal diameters of 10 mm and 9 mm in the horizontal and vertical meridians, respectively. K…

Retinal degeneration associated with ectopia lentis.

Two brothers had retinal degeneration, lens subluxation, and myopia since early life. There was no evidence of Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria, or other systemic disease. They had nystagmus, myopia, inferior dislocation of the lens, and posterior subcapsular opacities in both eyes. Fundus examination showed attenuated retinal vessels, macular atrophy with occasional pigment accumulation as clumps, and perivascular sleeves. Electroretinography revealed decreased photopic and scotopic responses. The visual fields were constricted. We believe this to be the first report of retinal degeneration wi
