I Do Not Like Green Eggs.

Shells of pinworm ova contain chitin, which stains bright green when exposed to chlorazol black E. The objective was to determine whether chlorazol black E could assist in identification of pinworm ova from skin scrapings. Skin scrapings were stained using chlorazol black E and pinworm ova were more easily recognized, staining a blue-green color.

[Egg allergy].

Egg is one of the most important allergen in childhood feeding. The pathogenic mechanism in egg allergy is immediate, type I, IgE-mediated h … complete removal of hen egg from the child's diet, yet considering cross-reaction with other birds' eggs, while cross- reaction with poultry and/or other birds' meat has been signalled only in 5% of cases. From this review it is clear how egg allergic children can be vaccinated against measles-mumps rubella.

Egg-laying.

C. elegans hermaphrodites are self-fertile, and their rate and temporal pattern of egg-laying are modulated by diverse environmental cues. Egg-laying behavior has served as an important phenotypic assay for the genetic dissection of neuronal signal transduction mechanisms. This chapter reviews our current understanding of the neuronal and neurochemical mechanisms underlying the control of egg-laying in C. elegans. The roles of specific neurons in the egg-laying motor circuit, which release multiple neurotransmitters affecting distinct parameters of egg-laying muscle activity, and the possible

Creation of a standardized egg ladder for IgE-mediated egg allergy.

BACKGROUND: A food ladder is a step-wise progression from extensively heated to unheated food. Heating decreases the allergenicity of food proteins by modifying conformational epitopes. Progressing from extensively baked to less heated foods offers a progression from a less-allergenic to a more-allergenic form. Currently available food ladders lack standardization and often lack recipes and clear instructions, and nutritional content and palatability are not always considered. OBJECTIVE: We have created an egg ladder (EL) for IgE-mediated egg allergy. METHODS: We adapted toddler-friendly rec

Schistosoma "Eggs-Iting" the Host: Granuloma Formation and Egg Excretion.

Schistosomiasis is a major cause of morbidity in humans invoked by chronic infection with parasitic trematodes of the genus Schistosoma. Schistosomes have a complex life-cycle involving infections of an aquatic snail intermediate host and a definitive mammalian host. In humans, adult male and female worms lie within the vasculature. Here, they propagate and eggs are laid. These eggs must then be released from the host to continue the life cycle. Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma japonicum reside in the mesenteric circulation of the intestines with egg excreted in the feces. In contrast, S. h…

Salmonella in eggs and egg-laying chickens: pathways to effective control.

Eggs contaminated with Salmonella have been internationally significant sources of human illness for several decades. Most egg-associated illness has been attributed to Salmonella serovar Enteritidis, but a few other serovars (notably S. Heidelberg and S. Typhimurium) are also sometimes implicated. The edible interior contents of eggs typically become contaminated with S. Enteritidis because the pathogen's unique virulence attributes enable it to colonize reproductive tissues in systemically infected laying hens. Other serovars are more commonly associated with surface contamination of eggshel…

Cracking the shell on egg-hypersensitive patients and egg-containing vaccines.

Hens' eggs are a common food in the American diet. They are consumed as a primary food source and added as an ingredient to other foods. In individuals who are hypersensitive to eggs, egg-containing foods can cause mild to severe allergic reactions if ingested. These individuals may also have adverse reactions to vaccines produced on egg media. Vaccines that are created on egg media include those for measles, mumps, and rubella; rabies; yellow fever; and influenza. The authors discuss recent developments in the use of egg-containing vaccines in hypersensitive patients.

Administration of egg-derived vaccines in patients with history of egg sensitivity.

A history of a prior hypersensitivity reaction to egg has precluded patients from receiving egg-derived vaccines. We present three cases of successful administration of egg-derived vaccines; specifically influenza and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) to patients with egg hypersensitivity. Two were given influenza vaccine without incident and one was successfully desensitized to MMR. Skin testing and desensitization protocols are described. Desensitization to all three components of MMR has not been reported previously.
