Ego development in female-to-male transsexual couples.

The ego development of 22 postoperative female-to-male transsexuals and their spouses or lovers with whom they had been living for a year or more was investigated. The transsexuals, their spouses, and a control group of 22 couples were administered the Washington University Sentence Completion Test of Ego Development, a projective measure of ego functioning. Ego development refers to the framework of meaning that the individual brings to an experience. The construct of ego development incorporates a series of sequential stages that integrate various frames of reference including cognitive styl…

Ego development, dragon fights, and chronic drug abusers.

Developmental antecedents of adult behavior are described for four matched groups of chronic drug users (cocaine, amphetamine, opiates, barbiturates, and sedative-hypnotics) and a comparable group of nonusers, each group having been studied intensively for approximately 1.5 years. Integration is provided by a theory that views psychological development as a series of ego transformations, which appear metaphorically in legend and mythology as dragon fights. Each group is characterized theoretically by a core conflict, an upper limit on individuation, and a typical character. Results imply that …

Misclassifying Ego-Syntonic Violence as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR) defines obsessions in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) as recurrent thoughts, urges, or images that are intrusive, unwanted, and distressing. Because the manual does not include an explicit ego-dystonicity requirement, its definition risks conflating anxiety-driven intrusions with gratification-driven impulses. This ambiguity carries significant forensic implications. When violent ideation is emotionally gratifying, it may still be described as distressing or unwanted, in a practical sense. In…

Ego-pathology and common symptom factors in schizophrenia.

The phenomenological construct of ego-pathology in schizophrenia has been widely referred to in psychopathological textbooks but was systematically assessed in very few empirical studies. This study investigated the association between ego-pathology (Ego-Pathology Inventory) and common symptom factors (Positive and Negative Symptom Scale) in paranoid schizophrenia patients within 3 days after admission and after 2 weeks of treatment. The predictive value of ego-pathology for short-term treatment outcome was also assessed. A factor analysis of all subscale scores revealed a four-factor solution…

Dyslexia and self-control. An ego psychoanalytic perspective.

Dyslexia and the self-control problems that frequently accompany it are viewed from an ego psychoanalytic perspective. Dyslexia is conceptualized as resulting from an ego deficit in language processing; this deficit is seen as contributing to the ADHD-type symptoms often seen in dyslexic children. Lacking certain crucial components of linguistic competence, the dyslexic child is therefore also lacking a basic tool of impulse control. As a result, this child may exhibit a type of language deficit based impulsivity that has dynamic characteristics which are diagnostically significant. In additio…

"Ego-dystonic" delusions as a predictor of dangerous behavior.

This paper aims to report a possible warning sign for dangerous behavior in delusional psychotic patients. We demonstrate an association between aggressive or auto-aggressive ideation and "ego-dystonic" grandiose delusions, where the patient believes to possess unique qualities but finds them unbearable. The study is based on the sample of seven interviews with five psychotic in-patients at the Kfar Shaul Mental Health Center, Jerusalem, Israel. All patients experienced an acute psychotic episode, and committed acts of aggression or suicidality. The research method is narrative analysis of sem…

Therapeutic writing as a form of ego-state therapy.

In this paper I describe a special form of ego-state therapy that integrates writing letters to one's self as an internal therapeutic communication among various ego states previously not fully aware of each other or engaged in destructive power struggles. Expressing one's thoughts, feelings, and urges in writing transforms primary process activities of the self into secondary processes that are more mature and adaptive to healthy functioning in day-to-day living. This method also reinforces the idea of patient empowerment in the form of self-healing and utilizing internal resources in the pro…

The Ego Impairment Index and schizophrenia: a validation study.

This study is an extension of our work on a new scale, the Ego Impairment Index (EII; Perry & Viglione, 1991). The index is theoretically based on Beres's (1956) model of ego assessment and was empirically developed on a sample of melancholic, depressed outpatients, diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed. [DSM-III]; American Psychiatric Association, 1980). The EII is derived from the Rorschach Inkblot Test and offers a single composite score of ego impairment. This study validates the use of the EII with a heterogeneous sample of schizophrenic …

Ego functions and psychopathology in narcotics and polydrug users.

The literature reporting on aspects of ego functioning and psychopathology among narcotics and polydrug dependent individuals is reviewed. Data are presented which indicate impairment in ego functioning and evidence of considerable psychopathology in three groups of drug-dependent individuals entering an inpatient detoxification/treatment unit. The data support the view that drug misuse of any sort does not result in a homogeneous group. The Psychiatric Status Schedule of Spitzer and Endicott was the instrument used in gathering the data. Recommendations for discriminate thinking in diagnostic…

Ego- and Geo-Centered References: A Functional Neuroimagery Study.

INTRODUCTION: The integration of vestibular, visual, and somatosensory cues allows the perception of space through the orientation of our body and surrounding objects with respect to gravity. The main goal of this study was to identify the cortical networks recruited during the representation of body midline and the representation of verticality. METHODS: Thirty right-handed healthy participants were evaluated using fMRI. Brain networks activated during a subjective straight-ahead (SSA) task were compared to those recruited during a subjective vertical (SV) task. RESULTS: Different patterns

Detection of Significant Pneumococcal Meningitis Biomarkers by Ego Network.

OBJECTIVE: To identify significant biomarkers for detection of pneumococcal meningitis based on ego network. METHODS: Based on the gene expression data of pneumococcal meningitis and global protein-protein interactions (PPIs) data recruited from open access databases, the authors constructed a differential co-expression network (DCN) to identify pneumococcal meningitis biomarkers in a network view. Here EgoNet algorithm was employed to screen the significant ego networks that could accurately distinguish pneumococcal meningitis from healthy controls, by sequentially seeking ego genes, searchi…

Adolescent Ego-Development Trajectories and Young Adult Relationship Outcomes.

Adolescent ego-development trajectories were related to close-relationship outcomes in young adulthood. An adolescent sample completed annual measures of ego development from ages 14 through 17. The authors theoretically determined and empirically traced five ego-development trajectories reflecting stability or change. At age 25, the sample completed a close-relationship interview and consented for two peers to rate the participants'ego resiliency and hostility. Participants who followed the profound-arrest trajectory in adolescence reported more mundane sharing of experiences, more impulsive …

Estimation of Ligand Binding Free Energy Using Multi-eGO.

The computational study of ligand binding to a target protein provides mechanistic insight into the molecular determinants of this process a … between speed and accuracy of MD simulations, we describe the use of the recently introduced multi-eGO atomic model for the estimation of binding free energies. We illustrate this approach in the case of the binding of benzene to lysozyme by both thermodynamic integration and metadynamics, showing multiple binding/unbinding pathways of benzene. We th …

Object trajectory estimation in the dashcam videos with ego-motion.

In this work, we propose a straightforward and practical object trajectory estimation method for dashboard camera (dashcam) videos with ego-motion. When an object detaches or is launched from a preceding vehicle, its motion under gravity follows a parabolic trajectory in 3D camera coordinates. However, conventional 2D image-plane methods, such as polynomial or exponential models, often yield inaccurate results because they neglect the camera's ego-motion and lack a rigorous physical foundation. To address this, we derive a projection-based model from the 3D parabolic trajectory by incorporatin…
