Thermal burn and electrical injuries among electric utility workers, 1995-2004.

This study describes the occurrence of work-related injuries from thermal-, electrical- and chemical-burns among electric utility workers. We describe injury trends by occupation, body part injured, age, sex, and circumstances surrounding the injury. This analysis includes all thermal, electric, and chemical injuries included in the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) Occupational Health and Safety Database (OHSD). There were a total of 872 thermal burn and electric shock injuries representing 3.7% of all injuries, but accounting for nearly 13% of all medical claim costs, second only to t

Electrical and lightning injuries.

The aim of this study was to explore the mechanisms, complications, morbidity, and mortality associated with electrical injuries. Of 5053 acute burn admissions during a 5-year period, 202 patients (4%) had electrical burn injuries. Their mean age was 27.5 years (range, 3-71 years). Ninety-eight percent were male, and the extent of burn ranged from 1% to 70% TBSA (mean, 10.5 +/- 10.7% TBSA). High-voltage electricity caused 54% of the electrical injuries. Forty-two percent were caused by low-voltage currents and 4% by lightning. A total of 217 surgical procedures were performed on 202 patients F

[Injuries caused by electricity].

We review a patient material consisting of cases with electrical injuries submitted to Sentralsykehuset i Akershus, Norway over a period of ten years. 18 cases were treated during the period 1 January 1978 to 31 December 1987. All were men, with a mean age of 33 years. All injuries were caused by AC current; seven were low voltage, and 11 high voltage injuries. The low voltage injuries proved to be relatively innocent, but 2/11 with high voltage injuries died. Many of the high voltage patients had severe deep tissue, mainly muscular, damage. The two who died had respiratory arrest, were uncons

Ocular injuries associated with two-wheeled electric transportation devices and motorcycle accidents.

Electric bicycles and scooters have gained popularity among riders; studies assessing these device-related injuries have not specified ocular trauma. Our study examined the types and risk factors for ocular and periocular injuries associated with electric devices compared to motorcycle accidents. The study was conducted on the National Trauma Registry database from 20 trauma centers, including patients involved in accidents with electric bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles between 2014 to 2019. Injured riders were assigned into two groups: motorcycle group (M) and electric bicycle & scooter gr

Alcohol and electric scooter injuries in an emergency department: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Variable prevalences of alcohol use have been reported among injured electric scooter (e-scooter) riders in emergency departments (ED) worldwide. The studies indicate a relationship between alcohol and injuries, especially at nighttime. A better understanding would guide the prevention of these injuries. The study objectives were to investigate the relationship between alcohol and injury patterns as well as the impact of restriction policies on ED presentations. METHODS: A prospective observational study at an urban level 2 trauma centre ED, where all patients presenting with e-sc

Comparing the characteristics of electric scooter and bicycle injuries: a retrospective cohort study.

Electric scooters (e-scooters) and bicycles are used for similar purposes as transportation. Few studies have shown that e-scooter and bicycle accidents differ in terms of user-profiles and injury characteristics. Still, there is missing information comparing the specific injury types, the overall incidence, and the relative risk of these accidents. We aimed to compare the characteristics, severity, and rate of e-scooter and bicycle injuries and assess their relative risk. We conducted a retrospective register study comparing e-scooter and bicycle injuries treated in emergency departments in H

Electrical injuries of the upper extremity.

Although electrical burns of the upper extremity comprise a small percentage of all thermal injuries, they present formidable clinical problems. The physician must not be lulled into a false sense of security because the visible cutaneous burn is not great. Sound surgical principles, such as the control of bacterial proliferation with topical chemotherapy, débridement of dead tissue, and timely wound closure, in conjunction with the expertise necessary in caring for thermally injured patients, are necessary for a maximally rehabilitated patient.

Rhabdomyolysis following electrical injury.

Severe electrical injury is often associated with acute rhabdomyolysis, evident from massively elevated serum creatine (CK) levels, along with presence of other muscle fiber constituents in the serum and urine, resulting specifically in hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and myoglobinuria. The acute medical care of the patient with electrical injury must include addressing supportive therapy for the rhabdomyolysis (more fully reviewed in other articles in this issue of Seminars), but understanding the underlying pathophysiology of rhabdomyolysis may allow for the future development of improved t

A clinical study of electrical injuries.

Over a period of 10 years (January 1983 to December 1992), 173 patients with electrical burns were admitted to our Burn Center, constituting 6.8 per cent of acute admissions. There is a relative abundance of data in the medical literature concerning electrical burns, clearly depicting the local characteristics and peculiarities in different countries or societies. Our purpose is to present some statistical, epidemiological data from a Burn Center in China which has a multitudinous population, as well as to compare our data with that from other countries. Our data show that prevention and early
