Use of Urine Electrolytes and Urine Osmolality in the Clinical Diagnosis of Fluid, Electrolytes, and Acid-Base Disorders.

We discuss the use of urine electrolytes and urine osmolality in the clinical diagnosis of patients with fluid, electrolytes, and acid-base disorders, emphasizing their physiological basis, their utility, and the caveats and limitations in their use. While our focus is on information obtained from measurements in the urine, clinical diagnosis in these patients must integrate information obtained from the history, the physical examination, and other laboratory data.

Reversible ionic aggregation kinetics in concentrated electrolytes.

Here we develop a formalism for reversible ionic aggregation kinetics in an example concentrated electrolyte, building on previous equilibrium work of McEldrew and co-workers, and thermoreversible polymers and patchy particle systems. This is achieved through solving a macroscopic rate equation of open/occupied association sites, shown to be a solution of the reversible Smoluchowski aggregation equation, which predicts how ionic associations in electrolytes change subject to a step-change in conditions. We tested the derived equations against atomistic molecular dynamics simulations of a salt-…

Antiviral drug-induced kidney and electrolytes disorders.

HIV patients are at a high risk for nephrotoxicity (HIV-induced nephrotoxicity, HIVAN). As a result, renal insufficiency, tubular dysfunction and renal-related biological disorders are frequently observed in those patients. However, in some cases those defects or anomalies in renal function may be related to antiviral therapies rather than the disease itself. This article reviews the incidence, presentation, prevention and management of antiviral drug-induced renal dysfunction.

Fetal urinary electrolytes in bladder outlet obstruction.

Ultrasound findings and urinary electrolytes in the fetus were correlated with fetal outcome and postmortem findings in 8 cases of fetal bladder outlet obstructions. One of the two fetuses, suggesting normal renal function according to urinary electrolytes, displayed renal dysplasia at birth. Six fetuses were predicted to have poor renal function, 5 of these were found to have renal dysplasia at autopsy. The interpretation of fetal urinary electrolytes as a prognostic indication for the presence or absence of renal dysplasia needs to be clarified.

Muscle electrolytes in malnutrition syndromes of children.

Muscle electrolyte composition has been studied in 10 infants with marasmus and eight children with kwashiorkor. The presence of altered muscle salt and water concentrations was confined in the latter nutritional syndrome. The marasmic infant, with equivalent or more severe nutritional wasting than the child with kwashiorkor, maintained a more normal muscle electrolyte concentration as indicated by a number of criteria. The pathophysiology of the altered muscle composition in kwashiorkor remains unclear; however, it appears to be more specific than due just to a depletion of available fat and

Electrodeposition of indium from non-aqueous electrolytes.

The electrochemical behaviour and deposition of indium in electrolytes composed of 0.4 mol dm-3 In(Tf2N)3 and 0.4 mol dm-3 InCl3 in the solvents 1,2-dimethoxyethane and poly(ethylene glycol) (average molecular mass of 0.400 kg mol-1, PEG400) was investigated. Indium(i) was identified as the intermediate species that disproportionated to indium(iii) and indium(0) nanoparticles. The presence of nanoparticles was verified by TEM analysis. SEM analysis showed that deposits obtained at room temperature from 1,2-dimethoxyethane were rough, while spherical structures were formed in PEG400 at 160 °C.

Urine electrolytes as markers of bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of bulimia nervosa (BN) is often delayed because patients are frequently secretive about the illness. Prior work has examined several potential diagnostic markers, none of which has been both highly sensitive and specific. Little is known about the utility of urine electrolytes in detecting BN symptoms. METHOD: Seventy-seven women with BN and 53 control women participated in the study. Urine and serum electrolytes and urine phenolthalein screens were obtained. Subjects with BN also completed a self-report instrument (the Eating Behaviors IV) regarding vomiting during …

Electrolytes in the cornea: a therapeutic challenge.

BACKGROUND: Reported here are the results of electrolyte measurements in different layers of 70 apparently normal human corneas. METHODS: Samples were examined by energy-dispersive X-ray analysis under calibrated conditions in a scanning electron microscope. The method allows the simultaneous quantitative analysis of, among others, sodium (Na), chloride (Cl), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). The results are related to the dry weight of the analyzed samples. Four distinct layers, subepithelium, middle stroma, posterior stroma and Descemet's membrane, were analysed in each cornea. RESULTS: In

Familial meconium ileus with normal sweat electrolytes.

Meconium ileus (MeI) is the presenting symptom in 10 to 15 percent of infants with cystic fibrosis (CF), but it is a rare phenomenon in patients who do not have this disease. We report four Bedouin siblings who had MeI with no laboratory evidence of CF.

Jejunoileal bypass and electrolytes. A follow-up study of intra- and extra-cellular electrolytes with special emphasis on magnesium.

It is generally believed that patients operated on for gross obesity with jejunoileal shunt develop electrolyte malabsorption. In follow-up studies electrolyte abnormalities have been reported in 6-37% of the cases. We have not been able to find any description of simple diagnostic tools to help indicate which patients should be treated with electrolyte supplements. The aim of this study was to evaluate different diagnostic tools to determine whether they would identify which patients to treat. Ten patients with end-to-side jejunoileostomies were investigated. Our attempt failed. We were not a

Supporting-electrolyte-free electrosynthesis of hydroquinone in solid polymer electrolyte electrolyzers.

The electrification of chemical manufacturing requires electrochemical processes that are not only selective, but also simple in composition, energy-efficient, and scalable. In organic electrosynthesis, however, the use of supporting electrolytes often complicates product isolation and reduces process practicality. Herein, we demonstrate the supporting-electrolyte-free electrochemical synthesis of hydroquinone (HQ) from benzoquinone (BQ) in solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) electrolyzers coupled with water oxidation. In a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, BQ was efficiently reduced to…

Electrochemical corrosion accompanies dendrite growth in solid electrolytes.

Charging rates, cycling performance and safety of solid-state batteries using metal negative electrodes are often limited by dendrites1-3, the growth of which depends on coupling between electrochemical and mechanical driving forces. Previously, it has been assumed that dendrites propagate when plating-induced stresses reach the fracture stress of the solid electrolyte. Here we show that dendrites can propagate at far lower stresses. Using operando birefringence microscopy4, we directly measure stresses around growing dendrites in garnet Li6.6La3Zr1.6Ta0.4O12, a highly stable solid electrolyte

Dynamic Response of Concentrated Electrolytes to Chirp Signals.

Electrolytes, chirp signals, Brownian dynamics, conductivity, Maxwell-Wagner relaxation This study investigates the dynamic response of electrolyte/macroion solutions to time-varying electric fields, which is vital for applications from water desalination to neuromorphic computing and sensor technologies. Using large-scale Brownian dynamics simulations coupled with Poisson's equation, we examined the frequency-dependent conductivity of symmetric and binary electrolytes/nanoparticles across various concentrations. We reveal a comprehensive picture of charge transport mechanisms by employing chi…

Designing Fluorine-Free Electrolytes for Lithium Metal Batteries.

Fluorination of electrolytes has been a widely used strategy to enable stable cycling in lithium metal batteries. However, a move toward fluorine-free electrolytes is desirable given the safety and environmental concerns surrounding fluorinated materials. Designing these electrolytes requires a comprehensive understanding of bulk electrolyte and interfacial properties in the absence of fluorine, particularly the solvation structures surrounding Li+ and the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) composition. Among fluorine-free Li salts, lithium nitrate (LiNO3) is often used to obtain highly ion-con…

Fluid, electrolytes and nutrition: physiological and clinical aspects.

Fluid and electrolyte balance is often poorly understood and inappropriate prescribing can cause increased post-operative morbidity and mortality. The efficiency of the physiological response to a salt or water deficit, developed through evolution, contrasts with the relatively inefficient mechanism for dealing with salt excess. Saline has a Na+:Cl- of 1:1 and can produce hyperchloraemic acidosis, renal vasoconstriction and reduced glomerular filtration rate. In contrast, the more physiological Hartmann's solution with a Na+:Cl- of 1.18:1 does not cause hyperchloraemia and Na excretion followi
