St. Louis encephalitis outbreak in Louisiana in 2001.

A description of the St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) outbreak in Northeast Louisiana is presented. In the fall of 2001 there were 63 cases of St. Louis encephalitis in Monroe and West Monroe and seven additional cases in the neighboring parishes of Richland, Morehouse and Franklin. All cases had a clinical presentation of encephalitis and were confirmed serologically. Clinically most cases presented with fever, meningitis syndrome with altered mental status. Tremors were common (56% of cases). There were three deaths. Age-group distribution showed a predominance among 45 and older. The epidemic c

Reemergence of St. Louis Encephalitis Virus, California, 2015.

St. Louis encephalitis virus infection was detected in summer 2015 in southern California after an 11-year absence, concomitant with an Arizona outbreak. Sequence comparisons showed close identity of California and Arizona isolates with 2005 Argentine isolates, suggesting introduction from South America and underscoring the value of continued arbovirus surveillance.

Reemergence of St. Louis Encephalitis Virus in the Americas.

We summarize and analyze historical and current data regarding the reemergence of St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV; genus Flavivirus) in the Americas. Historically, SLEV caused encephalitis outbreaks in the United States; however, it was not considered a public health concern in the rest of the Americas. After the introduction of West Nile virus in 1999, activity of SLEV decreased considerably in the United States. During 2014-2015, SLEV caused a human outbreak in Arizona and caused isolated human cases in California in 2016 and 2017. Phylogenetic analyses indicate that the emerging SLEV in

The neurobehavioural consequences of St. Louis encephalitis infection.

BACKGROUND: St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) is a relatively common cause of neurological illness, yet little is known about its cognitive and psychosocial consequences. PURPOSE: To describe the cognitive, emotional, psychophysiological, and psychosocial consequences of SLE infection. METHOD: A comprehensive neuropsychological and psychophysiological evaluation of a high functioning woman 6 weeks and 1 year after acute SLE infection is presented. The focus and course of rehabilitation is also examined. RESULTS: The primary cognitive consequences of SLE infection involved attention, working memo

St Louis encephalitis. The 1975 epidemic in Mississippi.

In 1975, 229 laboratory-documented cases of St Louis encephalitis, 36 of which resulted in death, occurred in Mississippi. A total of 58% of these persons had encephalitis, 15% had aseptic meningitis, 21% had a febrile illness with no known CNS involvement, and 6% had other syndromes. Attack rates and case-fatality ratios increased with age. Although 60% of the cases occurred in a four-county area of northwest Mississippi, cases occurred in 42 of the 82 counties throughout the state. The epidemic erupted almost simultaneously, with variable intensity, in widely separated areas. Mosquito-contro

St. Louis encephalitis: lessons from the last decade.

In 1980 Reeves wrote that epidemics of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) are preventable by means of surveillance and vector abatement. This view is examined in the light of epidemic activity during the last decade (1977-1986), in which 9 discrete outbreaks occurred. In addition, 5 interactive factors (virus, vector, viremic host, human immunity, environmental temperature) described by Reeves as essential to the development of an SLE epidemic are reviewed in the light of recent research. Although much progress has been achieved, many questions remain about SLE epidemiology and ecology. Among the mo

St Louis encephalitis. Quantitative histologic and immunofluorescent studies.

Using techniques of stereology, we measured the severity of lesions in ten cases of acute St Louis encephalitis (SLE) from the 1975 epidemic in northern Illinois. Percentage of fractional volume and numerical profile density on area (N/A) of cellular nodules and N/A of blood vessels with perivascular inflammatory cellular infiltration were significantly correlated in 17 anatomic regions of the CNS. Ranking of the severity of lesions in these regions agreed with subjective estimates of other cases of SLE. Immunofluorescent tests established the presence of SLE viral antigen in cell bodies of ne

Provenance and geographic spread of St. Louis encephalitis virus.

St. Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is the prototypic mosquito-borne flavivirus in the Americas. Birds are its primary vertebrate hosts, but amplification in certain mammals has also been suggested. The place and time of SLEV emergence remain unknown. In an ecological investigation in a tropical rainforest in Palenque National Park, Mexico, we discovered an ancestral variant of SLEV in Culex nigripalpus mosquitoes. Those SLEV-Palenque strains form a highly distinct phylogenetic clade within the SLEV species. Cell culture studies of SLEV-Palenque versus epidemic SLEV (MSI-7) revealed no growth

Seasonal forecast of St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission, Florida.

Disease transmission forecasts can help minimize human and domestic animal health risks by indicating where disease control and prevention efforts should be focused. For disease systems in which weather-related variables affect pathogen proliferation, dispersal, or transmission, the potential for disease forecasting exists. We present a seasonal forecast of St. Louis encephalitis virus transmission in Indian River County, Florida. We derive an empiric relationship between modeled land surface wetness and levels of SLEV transmission in humans. We then use these data to forecast SLEV transmissio
