Endurance Training on Congenital Valvular Regurgitation: An Athlete Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Both intense endurance training and valvular regurgitation place a volume load on the right and left ventricles, potentially leading to dilation, but their effects in combination are not well-known. PURPOSE: The purpose of this case series is to describe the combined volume load of intense endurance athletic training and regurgitant valvular disease as well as the challenging assessment of each component's cardiovascular effect. METHODS: In this article, the clinical course of three elite endurance athletes with congenital valvular disease were reviewed. RESULTS: A swimmer with …

[Diagnosis of performance capacity and guided training for physical endurance].

The evaluation of the aerobic capacity is of great importance for athletes as well as for patients with cardiac and pulmonary diseases. For objective measurements of cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses heart rate, lactate concentration in capillary blood and ventilatory gas exchange are determined during incremental exercise tests either on different ergometers in a laboratory or under training conditions in the field. Besides the maximal O2-uptake (VO2max) several ventilatory and lactate thresholds have been proposed as reliable values for assessing the aerobic capacity and giving train

A multidisciplinary approach to overreaching detection in endurance trained athletes.

In sport, high training load required to reach peak performance pushes human adaptation to their limits. In that process, athletes may experience general fatigue, impaired performance, and may be identified as overreached (OR). When this state lasts for several months, an overtraining syndrome is diagnosed (OT). Until now, no variable per se can detect OR, a requirement to prevent the transition from OR to OT. It encouraged us to further investigate OR using a multivariate approach, including physiological, biomechanical, cognitive, and perceptive monitoring. Twenty-four highly trained triathl

Exertional heat illness in a Marine training on the endurance course.

Exercise-induced heat stroke is defined as core temperature greater than 104 degrees F (400 degrees C) accompanied by signs or symptoms of organ system failure, most commonly CNS dysfunction. Exertional heatstroke is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate whole-body cooling for a satisfactory outcome. Cooling should be initiated and, in the absence of life-threatening complications, completed on site prior to evacuation to an emergency department or other facility. Cool-water immersion provides the fastest whole body cooling rate and the lowest morbidity and mortality for exertio

Decreased pituitary sensitivity to glucocorticoids in endurance-trained men.

OBJECTIVE: Muscular exercise induces hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation and when regularly repeated, as in endurance training, leads to HPA axis adaptation. To assess whether non-professional endurance-trained (ET) men with a substantial training load and no clinical or biological features of HPA axis overactivity can present subtle alterations of HPA axis sensitivity to glucocorticoid negative feedback, nine ET men were subjected to HPA axis testing using the dexamethasone-corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) test. DESIGN: Nine endurance-trained men and eight healthy age-m…

Interference of strength development by simultaneously training for strength and endurance.

The purpose of this study was to determine how individuals adapt to a combination of strength and endurance training as compared to the adaptations produced by either strength or endurance training separately. There were three exercise groups: a strength group (S) that exercised 30--40 min . day-1, 5 days . week-1, and endurance group (E) that exercised 40 min . day-1, 6 days . week-1; and an S and E group that performed the same daily exercise regimens as the S and E groups. After 10 weeks of training, VO2max increased approx. 25% when measured during bicycle exercise and 20% when measured du…

Dose-response to endurance training: a longitudinal study of training load and biomarkers in elite triathletes.

This study examined the relationships between fatigue-related blood biomarkers, training load distribution, and performance changes in elite triathletes across a structured training season. Twenty athletes (11 international-level and 9 national-level) were monitored. Exercise stimuli were quantified using objective and subjective metrics during the general and specific preparatory periods, with each microcycle classified as heavy, moderate, or low according to accumulated weekly load. Baseline and follow-up blood samples were collected to assess urea and creatine kinase (CK), and an incrementa

Endurance training volume cannot entirely substitute for the lack of intensity.

PURPOSE: Very low intensity endurance training (LIT) does not seem to improve maximal oxygen uptake. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if very high volume of LIT could compensate the lack of intensity and is LIT affecting differently low and high intensity performances. METHODS: Recreationally active untrained participants (n = 35; 21 females) cycled either LIT (mean training time 6.7 ± 0.7 h / week at 63% of maximal heart rate, n = 16) or high intensity training (HIT) (1.6 ± 0.2 h /week, n = 19) for 10 weeks. Two categories of variables were measured: Low (first lactate thr…

Endurance training and sprint performance in elite junior cross-country skiers.

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the relationship between aerobic characteristics and sprint skiing performance, and the effects of high-intensity endurance training on sprint skiing performance and aerobic characteristics. Ten male and 5 female elite junior cross-country skiers performed an 8-week intervention training period. The intervention group (IG, n = 7) increased the volume of high-intensity endurance training performed in level terrain, whereas the control group (CG, n = 8) continued their baseline training. Before and after the intervention period, the skiers were…

Training variability and threshold density: a conceptual comparison of East African and Norwegian endurance training systems.

East African and Norwegian endurance training systems have both produced world-class distance runners, despite substantial differences in how training is organized, regulated, and executed. East African training is commonly characterized by group-based execution, variable pacing, fartlek-style sessions, and internally regulated intensity, often within altitude-associated environments. In contrast, the Norwegian model emphasizes threshold-density training, lactate-guided intensity control, structured interval formats, and repeated moderate-intensity sessions embedded within a high volume of low…

Can Resistance Training-Induced Skeletal Muscle Growth Improve Local Muscular Endurance?

Skeletal muscle growth occurs in response to training with a wide range of loads, despite traditionally being linked to high-load resistance training and maximal strength development. A body of literature suggests that with lower loads, training near fatigue/task failure is an important stimulus for muscle growth. We consider that training-induced adaptations often improve performance in the specific activity that stimulated them (e.g., increased cardiac output and endurance exercise). Accordingly, we explore skeletal muscle growth as a compensatory adaptation to intense fatiguing exercise, po

Effects of different intensity endurance training on atrial fibrillation in rats.

Exercise has a positive effect on various cardiovascular diseases. However, it is not uncommon to experience arrhythmia events during or after exercising. To determine how to maximize the benefits of exercise while ensuring safety. We conducted a study involving 40 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. These rats underwent exercise of different intensities for 8 weeks. We recorded electrophysiological stimulation to track the occurrence and duration of atrial fibrillation and other electrophysiological data. Additionally, we analyzed and observed the histology of cardiomyocytes. The results revealed

Adiposity, lipid levels, and brief endurance training in nonobese adolescent males.

Physical activity during childhood and adolescence may influence the development of childhood obesity and cardiovascular disease later in li … re not accompanied by changes in circulating lipids. In nonobese adolescent males a brief period of endurance training led to reductions in body fat depots without weight change while body fat increased rapidly in the control group. Exercise training did not change lipid levels, the latter may require more sustained alterations in patterns of physical activity.

Oxygen Uptake Kinetics in Endurance Trained Youth and Adult Cyclists.

Previous studies reported faster pulmonary oxygen uptake kinetics at the onset of exercise in untrained youth compared with adults. Whether or not these differences are identical for trained groups have not been examined. The purpose of this study was to compare ˙VO2 kinetics of youth and adult cyclists at moderate and heavy-intensity exercise. Thirteen adult (age: 23.2 ± 4.8 years; ˙VO2peak 68.4 ± 6.8 mL·min-1.kg-1) and thirteen youth cyclists (age: 14.3 ± 1.5 years; ˙VO2peak 61.7 ± 4.3 mL·min-1.kg-1) completed a series of 6-min square wave exercises at moderate and heavy-intensity exercise a
