Förster Resonance Energy Transfer-Enhanced Detection of Minute Amounts of DNA.

This article presents a novel approach to increase the detection sensitivity of trace amounts of DNA in a sample by employing Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between intercalating dyes. Two intercalators that present efficient FRET were used to enhance sensitivity and improve specificity in detecting minute amounts of DNA. Comparison of steady-state acceptor emission spectra with and without the donor allows for simple and specific detection of DNA (acceptor bound to DNA) down to 100 pg/μL. When utilizing as an acceptor a dye with a significantly longer lifetime (e.g., ethidium bromid

[Fluorescence resonance energy transfer between gentamycin and water-soluble CdTe QDs].

The water-soluble CdTe quantum dots (QDs) were prepared by using mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) as stabilizer in the aqueous system. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system was constructed between gentamycin (acceptor) and water-soluble CdTe QDs (donor). The maximal emission wavelength was 690 nm, and the line width of the fluorescence spectrum was very narrow (with the full width at half-maximum about 10 nm) and symmetric. The transfer of resonance energy from the CdTe QDs to gentamycin (GT) resulted in the fluorescence quenching of the QDs, corresponding to the increase in the con

NIR lanthanide luminescence by energy transfer from appended terpyridine-boradiazaindacene dyes.

Mononuclear trivalent lanthanide complexes with formula [Ln(L)(NO(3))(3)] [in which L=4,4-difluoro-8-(2':2'';6'':2'''-terpyridin-4''-yl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-2,6-diethyl-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (Boditerpy)] are reported for Ln=Yb, Nd, Er, La and Gd. According to the crystal structure of the Yb complex, the lanthanide ion is bound to the terdentate terpyridine and the inner coordination sphere of the nine-coordinate lanthanide ion is completed by three bidentate nitrate anions. The coordination polyhedron can be described as a distorted tricapped antiprism. The terpyridine chelate is almos

Energy transfer in reactive movements as a function of individual stretch load.

Background: By directly recording electromyographic activity profiles and muscle-tendon interaction, this study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms why well-trained track and field athletes (experts) are able to outperform untrained individuals without former systematic experience in reactive jump training (novices). In particular, reactive power output and the elastic recoil properties of the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) were of special interest. For this purpose, stiffness regulation on muscle and joint level, energy management in terms of storing or dissipating elastic energy were compared betwee

Efficiency of energy transfer, but not external work, is maximized in stunned myocardium.

There is no evidence regarding the effect of stunning on maximization of regional myocardial external work (EW) or efficiency of energy transfer (EET) in relation to regional afterload (end-systolic stress, sigma(es)). To that end, we studied these relationships in both the left anterior descending coronary artery (LADCA) and left circumflex coronary artery regions in anesthetized, open-chest pigs before and after LADCA stunning. In normal myocardium, EET vs. sigma(es) was maximal at 75.4 (69.7-81.0)%, whereas EW vs. sigma(es) was submaximal at 12.0 (6.61-17.3) x 10(2) J/m(3). Increasing sigma

Dexter Energy Transfer Photocatalytic Microdissection of Amyloid Plaques in Alzheimer's Disease.

Amyloid plaque is a pathological hallmark in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain with its composition associated with disease etiology. Here, we report a photocatalyst, namely, AmyCAT, that selectively binds to amyloid fibrils in AD brain tissues and undergoes Dexter energy transfer (DET) to catalyze carbene production for amyloid proximity labeling. First, we designed the AmyCAT photocatalyst to universally bind different types of amyloids. Second, we energetically match the DET effect in a 12 × 4 photocatalyst-substrate array to activate the diazo substrate into reactive carbene species by visibl

Energy-Transfer Catalysis Enables the Birch-Type Reduction of 2-Pyridones.

Partially saturated heteroarenes are key intermediates in drug development, as their increased C(sp3) character and inherent synthetic versatility enable the rapid generation of improved lead structures. Despite their value, direct access from their aromatic precursors under Birch conditions remains limited due to safety, as well as chemoselectivity challenges. In this context, energy-transfer (EnT)-enabled Birch-type reductions have emerged as a powerful strategy for (chemo)selective product formation. However, it has been largely confined to bicyclic (hetero)arenes, while their more prevalen

Low-cost highlighter nanoparticles for highly efficient multistep excitation energy transfer.

Efficient excitation energy transfer (EET) is essential for energy harvesting, optoelectronics, luminescence bioimaging and photothermal medicine. Recent advances in optimised multistep EET systems have expanded the potential of these applications, offering large Stokes shifts, long-range energy transfer, and a broader tuning range for excitation and emission. However, the energy transfer efficiency of these systems rarely exceeds 90%, suggesting room for further improvement. Seeking low-cost solutions to this global problem, we show that a worldwide commercial orange highlighter ink produces

Energy-Transfer-Mediated Radical-Relay Brook Rearrangement of Electron-Deficient Ketones.

Herein, we report an energy transfer (EnT)-mediated radical-relay Brook rearrangement starting from commercially available electron-deficient ketones and silanes. This method eliminates the need for pre-installed α-silyl groups by employing an engineered N-O reagent that mediates a cascade of silane activation, regioselective carbonyl addition, and radical-radical cross-coupling. The orchestrated radical-involved cascade sequence exhibits a broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance. Moreover, this protocol enables the late-stage diversification of complex drug molecules, o

Dissociation of adsorbates via electronic energy transfer from aromatic thin films.

Photofragment translational spectroscopy has been used to characterize the energetics and the cross sections for photodissociation of CH3I and CF3I adsorbed on thin films of a variety of aromatic molecules, initiated by near-UV light. Thin films (nominally 10 monolayers) of benzene, five substituted benzenes and two naphthalenes have been employed to study systematic changes in the photochemical activity. Illumination of these systems with 248 nm light is found to result in a dissociation process for the CH3I and CF3I mediated by initial absorption in the aromatic thin film, followed by electr

Luminescence properties and energy-transfer behavior of Y2-x-yBixEuyMgTiO6 phosphors.

In recent years, double perovskite has become a research hotspot of luminescent matrix materials due to its flexible structure, easy doping and good thermal stability. By using a high temperature solid-state technique, Bi3+ and Eu3+ co-doped Y2-x-yBixEuyMgTiO6 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.1, 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.5) phosphors were made. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis shows that the crystal structure of all samples is monoclinic system, P21/n; Bi3+ and Eu3+ can be doped into the position of Y3+ in the substitution system of Y2MgTiO6. Both photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) and X-ray excitation luminescence spectroscopy (

Robust voltage-controlled transcutaneous energy transfer system for artificial anal sphincter.

BACKGROUND: The artificial anal sphincter (AAS) system has gained significant attention as a solution for treating fecal incontinence (FI). It relies on transcutaneous energy transfer (TET) as its primary energy source. However, changes in posture or biological tissue can cause misalignment of the coil, resulting in unstable power reception. Inadequate power affects charging efficiency, while excessive power leads to excessive heating at the receiver side. Consequently, achieving safe and constant voltage charging for the AAS becomes a complex challenge. METHODS: To maintain a consistent char

Near-infrared light-triggered prodrug photolysis by one-step energy transfer.

Prodrug photolysis enables spatiotemporal control of drug release at the desired lesions. For photoactivated therapy, near-infrared (NIR) light is preferable due to its deep tissue penetration and low phototoxicity. However, most of the photocleavable groups cannot be directly activated by NIR light. Here, we report a upconversion-like process via only one step of energy transfer for NIR light-triggered prodrug photolysis. We utilize a photosensitizer (PS) that can be activated via singlet-triplet (S-T) absorption and achieve photolysis of boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY)-based prodrugs via tripl

Using nonfluorescent Förster resonance energy transfer acceptors in protein binding studies.

The purpose of this article is to highlight the versatility of nonfluorescent Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) acceptors in determination of protein equilibrium dissociation constants and kinetic rates. Using a nonfluorescent acceptor eliminates the necessity to spectrally isolate the donor fluorescence when performing binding titrations covering a broad range of reagent concentrations. Moreover, random distribution of the donor and acceptor chromophores on the surface of proteins increases the probability of FRET occurring on their interaction. Three high-affinity antibodies are prese

Electrochemiluminescence determination of pipemidic acid using sulfite as energy transfer mediator.

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) based on energy transfer from electro-generated triplet sulfur dioxide to pipemidic acid (PPA) was studied. A weak ECL from triplet sulfur dioxide (3)SO2 * was observed when sulfite was electrochemically oxidized in sulfuric acid solution on a Pt electrode. When PPA was present, the weak ECL was enhanced. The enhanced ECL was attributed to energy transfer from (3)SO2 * to PPA. Based on the enhanced ECL, a flow-injection (FIA) ECL method for the determination of PPA was proposed. The proposed method allowed the measurement of PPA over the range of 1.0x10(-7) to

Energy Homeostasis Disruption in Neurological Disorders: Mitochondrial Dysfunction, High-Energy Phosphate Transfer, and Extracellular ATP-Dependent Purinergic Dysregulation.

Mitochondrial dysfunction and impairment of high-energy phosphate transfer are increasingly recognised as shared pathogenic features across neurological disorders. Because neurons require large amounts of ATP to sustain synaptic transmission, ion gradients, axonal transport, and intracellular signalling, they are especially vulnerable to disturbances in energy metabolism. Neurological dysfunction, therefore, cannot be explained solely by reduced mitochondrial ATP production. It also involves failure of the creatine kinase/phosphocreatine (CK/PCr) and adenylate kinase/AMP-activated protein kina

Biarticular energy transfer mechanisms of the gastrocnemii muscles are associated with managing body energy during hole negotiation gait.

In this study, the energy transfer potential between the ankle and knee joints via the biarticular gastrocnemius medialis and lateralis muscles was investigated, as well as its association with changes in total centre of mass (CoM) energy during hole negotiation - a common task in daily life locomotion - and level walking. Whole-body kinematics and activation patterns of the gastrocnemii and vasti muscles were measured during the preparation, hole, and recovery steps in 18 participants. During hole negotiation, we found a significant (p < 0.001) increase in the peak-to-peak range of total CoM
