We have studied the effects of enflurane on intracranial pressure (ICP) in 9 neurosurgical patients, whose ICP was continuously monitored for therapeutic or diagnostic purposes. The control ICP was under 15 Torr in 5 cases, under 20 Torr in 3 cases and of 25 Torr in one case. In order to achieve stable ventilatory conditions, the patients were kept under controlled ventilation, breathing a mixture of 60 to 70% nitrous oxide and oxygen. The effect of pretreatment with barbiturates or diazepam on the in vivo metabolism of halothane or enflurane (92 ppm) was investigated upon application by inhalation. An 8-year-old asthmatic child on theophylline was anesthetized with enflurane in nitrous oxide and oxygen. He developed a generalized muscle rigidity after intravenous succinylcholine. Although the maximum rectal temperature was 37.9 degrees C, a marked elevation in muscle-derived enzymes and myoglobinuria were observed. The relations among theophylline which is a derivative of xanthines, inhalation anesthetics, and myoglobinuria are discussed.

Seventy-seven patients presenting for outpatient cystoscopy participated in a trial to assess postoperative recovery when either alfentanil, halothane, or enflurane were used in combination with nitrous oxide/oxygen anaesthesia. Sixty male patients undergoing limb surgery were anaesthetised using a drawover technique with the Triservice apparatus. They were randomly allocated to receive trichloroethylene and one of three other volatile agents (halothane, enflurane or isoflurane) after thiopentone induction. Signs of inadequate anaesthesia were noted. The incidence of such signs was not significantly different in the three groups. Similarly, no qualitative difference could be demonstrated in the immediate recovery, but the recovery time was significantly shorter with enflurane.
