The concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is based on evidence-based medicine. By optimizing the treatment measures, the stress response of the body is reduced to meet the body's metabolic changes during the perioperative period, so as to achieve the purpose of accelerating recovery. In the perioperative period, acupuncture can relieve patients' preoperative anxiety, shorten fasting time, reduce the amount of anesthetics, protect organ function, reduce postoperative pain, reduce postoperative nausea and vomiting, and speed up postoperative recovery. The addition of acupuncture inte…

Optimal fluid therapy during perioperative care as part of enhanced recovery after cardiac surgery (ERACS) should improve the outcome. Our objective was finding out the effects of fluid overload on outcome and mortality within a well-established ERACS program. All consecutive patients undergoing cardiac surgery between January 2020 and December 2021 were enrolled. According to ROC curve analysis, a cut-off of ≥7 kg (group M, n = 1198) and <7 kg (group L, n = 1015) was defined. A moderate correlation was shown between weight gain and fluid balance r = 0.4, and a simple linear regression was sig

Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is currently the recommended surgical strategy, the main content of which is to reduce perioperative stress response and postoperative complications through perioperative multimodal analgesia and intensive surgery. Since ERAS was introduced, many rehabilitation medicine teams have been deeply involved, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition therapy and psychological counseling. However, ERAS lacks several powerful means to address perioperative prognostic issues. Therefore, how to further improve the effects of ERAS, reduce perioperat…

PURPOSE: Prior studies of enhanced recovery protocols (ERP) have been conducted at large institutions with abundant resources. These results may not apply at institutions with less resources directed to quality improvement efforts. The purpose of this study was to assess the value of a minimalistic enhanced recovery protocol in reducing length of stay (LOS) following PSF for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. We hypothesized that accelerated transition to oral pain medications and mobilization alone could shorten hospital length of stay in the absence of a formal multimodal pain regimen.

Enhanced Recovery After Cardiac Surgery (ERACS) is a multidisciplinary and multiprofessional treatment approach in cardiac surgery. Recently, a transfer and adaptation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols from other disciplines, such as colorectal surgery, to cardiac surgery has been performed in different settings. First, prehabilitation programs have been established and investigated to improve patients' physical, psychological and nutritional status including treatment of preoperative anemia. Second, intraoperative therapeutic steps are described, such as infection reduction …

Enhanced recovery pathways were first developed in colorectal surgery and have since been adapted to other surgical subspecialties including gynecologic surgery. Mounting evidence has shown that the adoption of a standardized perioperative pathway based on evidence-based literature reduces length of hospital stay, reduces cost, reduces opioid requirements with stable to improved pain scores, and accelerates return to normal function as measured by validated patient reported outcomes measurements. The many elements of enhanced recovery may be distilled into 3 concepts: (1) optimizing nutrition

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) tumors are among the most prevalent malignancies, and surgical intervention remains a primary treatment modality. However, the complexity of GI surgery often leads to prolonged recovery and high postoperative complication rates, which threaten patient safety and functional outcomes. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) principles have been shown to improve perioperative outcomes through evidence-based, multidisciplinary care pathways. Despite its widespread adoption, there is a paucity of research focusing specifically on optimizing ERAS-guided nursing proce…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Many surgical subspecialties have developed enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols that focus on multimodal analgesia to limit opioid use during a hospital stay and improve patient recovery. Unfortunately, ERAS protocols do not extend to post-discharge patient care, and opioids continue to be over prescribed. The primary reason seems to be a lack of good quality research evaluating extended use of a multimodal analgesic approach. This review was undertaken to evaluate available evidence for non-opioid analgesics in the postoperative period after discharge, utilizin…

BACKGROUND: Traumatic injuries are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality amongst pediatric patients; improving outcomes after pediatric abdominal trauma surgery could be quite impactful. Although enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways have been successfully employed in adult trauma patients, there are few studies on pediatric enhanced recovery after abdominal trauma surgery and no consensus post trauma surgery guidelines for children.
AIMS/METHODS: A systematic search of the existing literature for pediatric enhanced recovery after trauma surgery pathways was performed by two …

Digestive and liver disease : official journal of the Italian Society of Gastroenterology and the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver2023eng
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) guidelines are evidence-based recommendations designed to improve patient outcomes and reduce complications after surgery. Although the ERAS guidelines focus primarily on surgical procedures, many of the principles could be applied also to therapeutic endoscopy as well. An extensive literature research on Embase and PubMed was thus made to reviewed articles regarding ERAS protocols applied to therapeutic endoscopy, organized by specific endoscopic field. Out of 214 papers, only 6 were relevant to the topic. Few studies explored in real life and in trial s…

BACKGROUND: Adult cervical spinal deformity (ACSD) correction surgery remains among the most complex interventions in adult spine surgery with historically high morbidity and suboptimal recovery. Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, developed to improve surgical outcomes through multimodal perioperative care, have been established in other surgical models, including orthopedics, but are not well-established in cervical deformity surgery. The purpose of this review paper is to synthesize the current data on ERAS protocols and outcomes in ACSD, focusing on prehabilitation, periopera…
