Environmental forensic entomology: using carrion arthropods as information sentinels in ecological and forensic contexts.

The use of arthropods in a medicolegal framework is well-known and widely adopted in forensic death investigations. Typically, the life cycl … se methodologies can be leveraged in a forensic context. Further, we propose environmental forensic entomology as an emerging framework and extension of forensic entomology, which currently includes stored products entomology, urban entomology, and medicolegal entomology. Finally, we outline recommendations for future research in this area and propose guidel …

Exploring the ethical dimensions in forensic entomology: From codes of conduct to professional accountability.

This article investigates a critical part of professional careers: adhering to a code of ethics that defines proper behavior within the context of one's specialized practice. It aims to improve the setting of forensic entomology work by highlighting the ethical issues that frequently emerge. The primary goal is to uncover common ethical issues involved in this field's everyday activities and provide informed advice on appropriate resolution options. This investigation dives into the complex interaction of religious beliefs, cultural aspects, and issues of ethics, evaluating their relevance in …

Regional and seasonal patterns of blowfly distribution in southern Korea: implications for forensic entomology.

Blowfly species, which play a crucial role in forensic investigations as primary colonizers of cadavers, are influenced by environmental factors. However, most research conducted on blowfly species in South Korea remains limited to a single province. We investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of forensically relevant blowflies (Diptera: Calliphoridae) in the southern provinces of South Korea to enhance forensic entomology databases and improve postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. Overall, 3,934 adult blowflies representing 14 species across 5 genera were collected from 4 regions (Changny…

Forensic entomology and the estimation of the minimum time since death in indoor cases.

Eight cases that occurred indoors in which the insects played an important role in the mPMI estimation are presented. The bodies of socially isolated people and old people living alone were discovered in central Italy between June and November. mPMI ranged from a few days to several weeks. Insects were collected during the body recovery and the postmortem. Climatic data were obtained from the closest meteorological stations and from measurements performed on the site. Sarcophagidae and Calliphoridae species were present in 75% of the cases with Lucilia sericata and Chrysomya albiceps collected

Characterization of microsatellite loci in Phormia regina towards expanding molecular applications in forensic entomology.

Forensic entomology involves the use of insects and arthropods to assist a spectrum of medico-criminal investigations that range from identifying cases of abuse, corpse movements, and most commonly, post mortem interval estimates. Many of these applications focus on the use of blowflies given their predicable life history characteristics in their larval stages. Molecular tools have become increasingly important in the unambiguous identification of larval blowfly species, however, these same tools have the potential to broaden the array of molecular applications in forensic entomology to includ…

Malaria entomological inoculation rates in western Venezuela.

Over 61,000 anophelines collected between January 1988 and October 1989 in three villages in western Venezuela were assayed by ELISA for Plasmodium vivax circumsporozoite (CS) protein. The six specimens confirmed positive belonged to three species: Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) nuneztovari Gabaldón, 1940, A. albitarsis Arribalzaga, 1878 sensu lato and A. oswaldoi (Peryassu, 1922). The estimated CS protein rate for all species combined was 0.01% (95% confidence limits 0.004-0.02%). This CS protein rate and the mean number of bites received by the collectors indicated a sporozoite inoculation rate o

Bancroftian filariasis in a Philippine village: entomological findings.

Bancroftian filariasis in an isolated Philippine village has been intensively investigated; this paper reports the entomological findings. Surveys were carried out six months apart in the driest and wettest months. Significant transmission was demonstrated only during the wet season. Aedes poicillius was the major vector of Wuchereria bancrofti. Ae. poicilius accounted for 58% of larvae found in the axils of banana plants and 31% of those in abaca axils; negligible numbers of larvae of this species were found in pandanus and gabi axils. Mosquitoes were collected from indoor harbourages twice w

Vector control and entomological capacity for onchocerciasis elimination.

Mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin is currently the main strategy to achieve elimination of transmission (EoT) of onchocerciasis. Modelling suggests that EoT may not be reached in all endemic foci using annual MDA alone. Onchocerciasis and loiasis are coendemic in forest areas of Central Africa where ivermectin treatment can lead to severe adverse events in individuals with heavy loiasis load, rendering MDA inappropriate. Vector control has been proposed as a complementary intervention strategy. Here, we discuss (i) achievements and pitfalls of previous interventions; (ii) epidemiolo

Myiasis of the ear: a review with entomological aspects for the otolaryngologist.

OBJECTIVE: Myiasis is the infestation of live humans (or animals) by fly larvae. Although the diagnosis is relatively straightforward, how to best treat aural myiasis has not been well described in the literature. This comprehensive literature review, therefore, was performed to identify current management principles in aural myiasis, especially with regard to the causative fly family. In addition, we explore the possible relationship between aural myiasis and the highly lethal intracranial myiasis. DATA SOURCES: Literature review using the Medline database (PubMed), Scopus, and Google Schola

Leishmaniasis entomological field studies: ethical issues.

Occupational health remains neglected in developing countries because of competing social, economic and political challenges. Ethical issues in the workplace related to the hazards and risks of becoming infected by Leishmania (Leishmania) mexicana, through the bite of naturally infected sand flies, is another area of concern that has been neglected as well. We report here the results of reviewing two entomological field studies carried out in our research center from 2003 to 2006. Eight students from our School of Biology were invited to catch sand flies. A total of six of the eight (75%) deve

Leishmaniasis in greater Athens, Greece. Entomological studies.

Greater Athens, the largest urban area in Greece, has a population of 3.1 million and is home for most of the human and canine cases of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) reported in Greece. Seven species of sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) were identified in light- and sticky-trap surveys in the area in 1993. Although none of the flies was found in wooded areas or scrub, flies were collected from quarries, corrals, wells, walls, houses and animal shelters. There were small 'island' populations in residential districts and moderate or large populations in the quarries and corrals in the foothills of

Epidemio-entomological survey of Japanese encephalitis in Korea.

In order to determine the seasonal prevalence and population dynamics of Culex tritaeniorhynchus in relation to the epidemics of Japanese encephalitis, and ecology of these vector mosquito in Kyungpook Province, Korea, studies were conducted during the period of 7 years from 1984 to 1990. Cx. tritaeniorhynchus first collected in June between 4th and 28th, and trapped in large numbers during the period from mid-August to early September, showed a simple sharply pointed one-peaked curve. There was a gradual decrease from mid-September, with a very small number of them collected until early Octob

Exploring the impact of xenobiotic drugs on forensic entomology for accurate post-mortem interval estimation.

Forensic entomotoxicology is an emerging field within forensic entomology that investigates the effects of chemicals, drugs, and toxins on insect development and their implications for postmortem interval (PMI) estimation. This systematic overview delves into the influence of drugs such as Morphine, heroin, Opiates, and cocaine on the variables affecting the use of forensically significant insects as evidence tools. Notably, it has been observed that the presence of drugs does not appear to alter the progression of the lifecycle from the first instar to the emergence of flies, indicating that …

Entomological investigations into yellow fever outbreak in northern Ghana.

Arboviruses are pathogens of emerging/re-emerging infectious diseases. Half the world's population is at risk. Recent African epidemics confirmed 19,569 cases with 820 deaths. In Ghana, Savannah Region had yellow fever (YF) outbreak in 2021. Reports revealed 35 deaths, 202 suspected cases (case fatality rate (CFR) = 17%), and 70 confirmed cases (CFR = 50%). This paper presents YF outbreak entomological investigations findings. A team with expertise in YF outbreak response were assembled and tasked to assess, contain and/or control the rapid spread of YF. Immature Aedes aegypti were collected i
