Mapping climate change-driven epidemics.

The recent analysis by Mora and colleagues revealed that over 277 diseases can worsen due to climatic hazards resulting from greenhouse gas … limate-driven outbreaks. This study seeks to identify outbreaks of specific diseases categorized as epidemics, whose incidence is strongly correlated with global warming. The focus of this analysis is on (1) organizations responding to climate-related diseases to decelerate the incidence rates; (2) to call for a new disciplines in epidemiology that focuses …

Hormonal contraceptives and autism epidemics.

This paper defends the hypothesis of a potential causal link between increased usage of hormonal contraceptives (HCs) and significant rises in instances of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) worldwide. It develops a background theory that supports this hypothesis through analysis of: observed correlations between increased usage of HCs and increased instances of ASDs; consistent evidence from independent studies linking "birth spacing" intervals and ASD-risk; evidence from studies on the effects of HCs on folate and B12 absorption; and hypotheses concerning disruptions to mechanisms of delivery

The Zika epidemics and transplantation.

In the last few months an epidemic of Zika virus (ZIKV) has affected several countries, and it continues to spread rapidly. This virus was initially thought to cause only a mild febrile illness; however, the current epidemic has shown that it is associated with serious complications. Increasing reports are linking ZIKV to devastating conditions such as microcephaly in newborns and important neurologic syndromes. Although ZIKV infection has not yet been reported in transplant recipients, it is likely that it will be reported soon because of the number of transplants performed in affected areas

A note on heroin epidemics.

We show that the steady states of the White and Comiskey [E. White, C. Comiskey, Heroin epidemics, treatment and ODE modelling, Math. Biosci. 208 (2007) 312-324.] model of heroin epidemics are stable.

Transients and attractors in epidemics.

Historical records of childhood disease incidence reveal complex dynamics. For measles, a simple model has indicated that epidemic patterns represent attractors of a nonlinear dynamic system and that transitions between different attractors are driven by slow changes in birth rates and vaccination levels. The same analysis can explain the main features of chickenpox dynamics, but fails for rubella and whooping cough. We show that an additional (perturbative) analysis of the model, together with knowledge of the population size in question, can account for all the observed incidence patterns by
