[Use of nonparametric statistical criteria in epidemiological research].

The article deals with the possibility of using two nonparametric statistical methods (sign criterion, Wilkonson's paired criterion) in epidemiological investigations. Examples illustrating the use of these methods are presented and their advantages in comparison with commonly used methods are shown.

A comprehensive approach of the gender bias in occupational cancer epidemiology: A systematic review of lung cancer studies (2003-2014).

BACKGROUND: In occupational epidemiology, a male-centered perspective often predominates. We aimed to describe current research practices in terms of gender consideration at different stages of epidemiological studies. METHODS: A systematic review of occupational lung cancer publications indexed in PubMed was conducted over the period 2003-2014. Articles were described according to the sex composition of their study sample. RESULTS: In 243 studies, 7 (3%) were women-only, 101 (41%) were mixed, with a disproportionate men-to-women ratio (P50 = 3.5; P75 = 12.4). A shift was observed from mixed

Current Gaps in Ovarian Cancer Epidemiology: The Need for New Population-Based Research.

With recent ovarian cancer screening studies showing no clinically significant mortality benefit, preventing this disease, identifying high-risk populations, and extending survival remain priorities. However, several challenges are impeding progress in ovarian cancer research. With most studies capturing exposure information from 10 or more years ago, evaluation of how changing patterns of exposures, such as new oral contraceptive formulations and increased intrauterine device use, might influence ovarian cancer risk and survival is difficult. Risk factors for ovarian cancer should be evaluate

Estimating direct effects in cohort and case-control studies.

Estimating the effect of an exposure on an outcome, other than through some given mediator, requires adjustment for all risk factors of the mediator that are also associated with the outcome. When these risk factors are themselves affected by the exposure, then standard regression methods do not apply. In this article, I review methods for accommodating this and discuss their limitations for estimating the controlled direct effect (ie, the exposure effect when controlling the mediator at a specified level uniformly in the population). In addition, I propose a powerful and easy-to-apply alterna

Prevalence of childhood epilepsy in Kaunas, Lithuania.

The prevalence of epilepsy in children aged 0-15 years of Kaunas city, Lithuania, was evaluated on 1 January 1995. Multiple sources for case identification were used, i.e. medical records at the university hospital, regional outpatient clinics and consultation centres, institutions, schools and kindergartens for the handicapped. Active epilepsy was defined as two or more unprovoked epileptic seizures with at least one seizure occurring within the previous 5 years, regardless of the antiepileptic drug treatment. Prevalence was found to be 4.25 (3.42, if age-standardized) in 1000. The highest ra

[Metals, air pollution, and health: mosses to the rescue of epidemiology].

While evidence has accumulated about the links between long-term exposure to air pollution and health, little is known about the health effects of airborne metals. In France, the law makes it mandatory to monitor atmospheric concentrations and deposition of some airborne metals, through measurements or modelling. But the available data are either too scarce or irregular, making them difficult to use in large-scale epidemiology: using mosses in the wild offers a welcome alternative. Mosses belong to the few vegetal organisms able to accumulate airborne metals. As such, they have been used for d

International Olympic Committee consensus statement: methods for recording and reporting of epidemiological data on injury and illness in sport 2020 (including STROBE Extension for Sport Injury and Illness Surveillance (STROBE-SIIS)).

Injury and illness surveillance, and epidemiological studies, are fundamental elements of concerted efforts to protect the health of the athlete. To encourage consistency in the definitions and methodology used, and to enable data across studies to be compared, research groups have published 11 sport-specific or setting-specific consensus statements on sports injury (and, eventually, illness) epidemiology to date. Our objective was to further strengthen consistency in data collection, injury definitions and research reporting through an updated set of recommendations for sports injury and illn

The rationale and design of the national peripartum cardiomyopathy registries in Turkey: The ARTEMIS-I and ARTEMIS-II studies.

OBJECTIVE: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is left ventricular (LV) systolic dysfunction with an ejection fraction of ≤45% occurring in the later stages of pregnancy or soon after delivery. Although various risk factors have been identified, the exact cause of the disease is unknown. Unlike most countries in the European region, Turkey has yet to determine the current PPCM burden. A registry for this purpose does not exist. To close this gap, the A RegisTry of pEripartuM cardIomyopathy in Turkish patientS (ARTEMIS-I and ARTEMIS-II), was planned and endorsed by the Turkish Society of Cardiolog

The estimation of direct and indirect causal effects in the presence of misclassified binary mediator.

Mediation analysis serves to quantify the effect of an exposure on an outcome mediated by a certain intermediate and to quantify the extent to which the effect is direct. When the mediator is misclassified, the validity of mediation analysis can be severely undermined. The contribution of the present work is to study the effects of non-differential misclassification of a binary mediator in the estimation of direct and indirect causal effects when the outcome is either continuous or binary and exposure-mediator interaction can be present, and to allow the correction of misclassification. The use of United States vital statistics in perinatal and obstetric research.

Vital statistics data have been used to track maternal and child health in the United States since the early 1900s. The breadth of information collected on birth and death certificates coupled with advances in computer processing have made possible critical perinatal and obstetric research. These enhancements also facilitate potentially problematic uses of the same data. This commentary explores characteristics of the United States Vital Statistics System and presents some thoughts with regard to the appropriate use of these data. The advantages of vital statistics include representativeness a

Estimating numbers of injecting drug users in metropolitan areas for structural analyses of community vulnerability and for assessing relative degrees of service provision for injecting drug users.

This article estimates the population prevalence of current injection drug users (IDUs) in 96 large US metropolitan areas to facilitate structural analyses of its predictors and sequelae and assesses the extent to which drug abuse treatment and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) counseling and testing are made available to drug injectors in each metropolitan area. We estimated the total number of current IDUs in the United States and then allocated the large metropolitan area total among large metropolitan areas using four different multiplier methods. Mean values were used as best estimates,

Do men become infertile after having sexually transmitted urethritis? An epidemiologic examination.

OBJECTIVE: To critically assess the possibility that gonorrhea or chlamydia causes male infertility. DESIGN: Comprehensive literature review structured to evaluate the epidemiologic tenets for causality, including biologic plausibility, strength of association, dose response, consistency, temporality, and treatment effect. RESULT(S): It is biologically plausible that gonorrhea and/or chlamydia could cause male infertility. There is clinical and pathologic evidence linking these pathogens to urethritis, linking urethritis to epididymo-orchitis, and linking epididymo-orchitis to infertility. R

Research priorities in the evolving demographic landscape of Alzheimer disease and associated dementias.

The rapid increase of ethnically diverse late onset dementia-affected persons is bringing a special urgency to Alzheimer disease and associated disorders research. By this decade's end, non-European heritage ethnically diverse persons will account for 25% of the dementia-affected cohort and 33% by mid-century. These populations have received some attention in both dementia-focused basic biomedical and social-behavioral research. However, studies differ greatly with regard to the constructs of culture used, the methodologies used, and representativeness of the populations sampled. Moreover, soc

Alzheimer's disease and environmental exposure to lead: the epidemiologic evidence and potential role of epigenetics.

Several lines of evidence indicate that the etiology of late-onset Alzheimer's disease (LOAD) is complex, with significant contributions from both genes and environmental factors. Recent research suggests the importance of epigenetic mechanisms in defining the relationship between environmental exposures and LOAD. In epidemiologic studies of adults, cumulative lifetime lead (Pb) exposure has been associated with accelerated declines in cognition. In addition, research in animal models suggests a causal association between Pb exposure during early life, epigenetics, and LOAD. There are multiple
