INTRODUCTION: Only the organic and cryptogenic forms of frontal lobe epilepsy have been admitted by the ILAE, but according to several reports in the literature, it probably exists also an idiopathic form, at present not well recognized.
OBJECTIVE: To study the differences between the organic and the cryptogenic forms of frontal epilepsy in our patients, that might indicate the presence of idiopathic cases within the presumed cryptogenic group.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All patients diagnosed of frontal lobe epilepsy, EEG registered, at the neuropediatric clinic of our hospital during 1993-1996,

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common chronic neurological disease with an estimated prevalence of 1% in the UK. Approximately one third of these people continue to have seizures despite drug treatment. In order to try to improve outcomes a number of new antiepileptic drugs have been developed and pregabalin is one of these. This review is an update of a previous Cochrane review (Pulman 2008); no further studies have been added since the previous update in 2012 and only one study has been identified as an ongoing trial.
OBJECTIVES: To summarise evidence from randomised controlled trials regarding

BACKGROUND: The majority of people with epilepsy have a good prognosis and their seizures are well controlled by a single antiepileptic drug, but up to 30% develop drug-resistant epilepsy, especially those with partial seizures. In this review we summarise the current evidence regarding the antiepileptic drug gabapentin, when used as an add-on treatment for drug-resistant partial epilepsy.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of gabapentin when used as an add-on treatment for people with drug-resistant partial epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Epilepsy is a common neurological condition, affecting almost 0.5 to 1% of the population. Nearly 30% of people with epilepsy are resistant to currently available drugs. Tiagabine is one of the newer antiepileptic drugs and its effects as an adjunct (add-on) to standard drugs are assessed in this review.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of add-on treatment with tiagabine upon seizures, adverse effects, cognition and quality of life for people with drug-resistant localisation related seizures.

BACKGROUND: Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) is a rare neurocutaneous syndrome characterized by the presence of multiple congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) and the proliferation of melanocytes in the central nervous system, usually involving the leptomeninges. Chronic partial epilepsy as a sole manifestation is rare in NCM.
CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old man suffering from chronic partial epilepsy presented with multiple CMN on his trunk and scalp. Brain MRI demonstrated a focal lesion in the right amygdala that was consistent with interictal epileptiform discharges in the right temporal region on e

PURPOSE: Complex partial status epilepticus (CPSE) is often under-diagnosed, especially in children. The aim of this study was to clarify the characteristics and pathophysiology of CPSE in children with epilepsy.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records and EEGs of 17 children with epilepsy who were diagnosed as having CPSE by ictal or postictal EEGs to investigate clinical and EEG features.
RESULTS: The ages at diagnosis of CPSE ranged from 3 months to 17 years. At the time of diagnosis of CPSE, 13 patients had symptomatic localization-related epilepsy, two had

PURPOSE: Benign partial epilepsy in infancy (BPEI) was first described by Watanabe in 1987. The aim of this study is to describe a series of infants from the United States to characterize this entity further.
METHODS: Among patients with the diagnosis of epilepsy followed up at our institution between 2002 and 2004, those satisfying the criteria for BPEI were included in a retrospective study.
RESULTS: Sixteen (10.2%) of 150 patients with new onset of epilepsy younger than 2 years were identified. The mean age at seizure onset was 8 months. Four (25%) infants had a family history of benign s

In the human body, IGF-I circulates in the blood bound to a binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), which regulates the delivery of IGF-I to target tissues, and particular proteases clip them apart in response to stresses and release IGF-I as needed. Although it is currently known that sleep can influence epilepsy and epilepsy can influence sleep organization, few data have been published on this mutual interaction concerning the pediatric population. The objective of this study was to verify the eventual presence of sleep alterations in children with partial refractory epilepsy. Seventeen patients with partial refractory epilepsy were submitted to whole-night polysomnography as part of their epilepsy investigation. Polysomnographic recordings were performed on a digital video-electroencephalography (EEG) system and consisted of the regist

It has previously been reported that benign partial epilepsy in infancy constitutes up to 29% of the epilepsies presenting in the first 2 years of life. To determine the proportion of benign partial epilepsy in our epilepsy population, we retrospectively reviewed 331 patients with greater than two afebrile seizures in the first 2 years of life between 1993 and 2000. Inclusion criteria were (1) partial seizures with or without secondary generalization, (2) normal development, (3) no other neurologic abnormalities, (4) normal interictal electroencephalograms (EEGs), and (5) good response to trea

A four-generation family with nine individuals with temporal partial epilepsy was studied. Detailed epilepsy history was investigated by structured interview. All putatively affected family members underwent a standardized electroencephalographic examination. The phenotype in the family was characterized by a short acoustic aura followed by rapid secondary generalization. To examine if the trait is linked to a region on 10q (interval D10S185-D10S1671), which has been reported in two other epilepsy families with similar phenotypes, linkage analysis was performed using nine markers covering the

Idiopathic localization-related epilepsies are summarized according to the current classification of the International League Against Epilepsy. The recognition of a distinctive idiopathic epileptic syndrome occurring in children and featuring ictal vomiting, partial motor seizures, and occipital spikes is emphasized. Atypical evolutions of benign partial epilepsy of childhood and status of BPECS. Acquired epileptic aphasia has also been correlated to BPECS, and all these syndrome (CSWS). Childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms may also evolve into CSWS and into clinical and EEG status. Dif
