Autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) is an idiopathic epilepsy, with a spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from brief, stereotyped, sudden arousals to more complex dystonic-dyskinetic seizures. Video-polysomnography allows a correct differential diagnosis. There is no difference between sporadic nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (NFLE) and ADNFLE in the clinical and neurophysiological findings. ADNFLE is the first idiopathic epilepsy for which a genetic basis has been identified. Mutations have been found in two genes (CHRNA4 and CHRNB2) coding for neuronal nicoti

Frontal lobe epilepsy is an episodic neurological disorder characterised by recurrent seizures arising from one or both frontal lobes. Seizures may appear atypical and are easily misdiagnosed in the emergency department as nonepileptic attacks (psychological episodes) or parasomnias (sleep disorders). Given the multiple connections and functions of the frontal lobes, Frontal lobe epilepsy presentations are highly variable, including motor, psychic, behavioral or cognitive changes, with a wide differential diagnosis. Prompt diagnosis in the busy emergency department may be difficult, because of

When performing pre-surgical evaluation of patients with refractory epilepsy, the analysis of seizure semiology is one of the key elements used to generate a hypothesis about the location of the epileptogenic zone. Ictal kissing is a very rarely observed ictal automatism described in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. We present a 62-year-old man who was referred to our epilepsy centre for comprehensive evaluation. During prolonged video-EEG monitoring, six focal-onset hyperkinetic seizures were registered. In five seizures, the patient repeatedly produced sonorous kisses "into the air". In

BACKGROUND: Frontal Lobe Epilepsy (FLE) is the second most frequent type of partial epilepsy and its onset is generally in childhood. Though cognitive and behavioural impairments have been described as co-morbid disorders in epilepsy, their extent in FLE, particularly in children, remains unknown.
AIMS: In this study, we assess cognitive skills and behaviour in a cohort of paediatric FLE patients.
METHODS: We measured the performance of 71 children with cryptogenic FLE on intelligence tests, neuropsychological tests, and behavioural questionnaires. Age-dependent normative values were used fo

A case history is presented in which acute periodic catatonia was caused by frontal lobe epilepsy. This manifestation of frontal lobe epilepsy has not, to the authors' knowledge, been described before. The authors mention the problems of diagnosis and discuss a possible pathogenetic mechanism for the capricious presentation in this patient.

PURPOSE: This study was aimed to evaluate the impact of frontal (FLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) on graphic creativity.
METHODS: A hundred and six patients with FLE (n = 32) or TLE (n = 74) and 38 healthy subjects underwent a design fluency (DF) test constituted by a free and a fixed condition. For each condition, the number of correct designs, as an index of creativity, and unacceptable nonperseveration or perseveration designs were calculated. The participants also underwent a comprehensive neuropsychological battery.
RESULTS: The number of novel correct designs significantly differe

There is controversy in the literature as to how dissociable frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) are in terms of memory deficits. Some researchers have demonstrated that FLE is associated with greater executive dysfunction including working memory, whereas TLE is associated with greater memory impairment. Others have found the two groups to be comparable in memory functioning. Hence, we examined this question in children with FLE and TLE versus typically developing controls. We found most of the expected effects when the groups with focal onset epilepsy were compared t

UNLABELLED: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a critical healthcare challenge due to its ability to cause persistent infections and the acquisition of antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Lack of preventive vaccines and rampant drug resistance phenomenon has rendered patients vulnerable. As new antimicrobials are in the preclinical stages of development, mining for the unexploited drug targets is also crucial. In the present study, we designed a B- and T-cell multi-epitope vaccine against P. aeruginosa using a subtractive proteomics and immunoinformatics approach. A total of five proteins

Pre-surgical assessment and surgical management of frontal epilepsy with normal MRI is often challenging. We present a case of a 33-year-old, right-handed, educated male. During childhood, his seizures presented with mandibular myoclonus and no particular trigger. As a young adult, he developed seizures with a startle component, triggered by unexpected noises. During his ictal episodes, he felt fear and grimaced with sudden head flexion and tonic axial posturing. Similar seizures also occurred without startle. Neuropsychological assessment showed executive dysfunction and verbal memory deficit

OBJECTIVES: Cognitive impairment is frequent in children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). Its etiology remains unknown. With diffusion tensor imaging, we have studied cerebral white matter properties and associations with cognitive functioning in children with FLE and healthy controls.
METHODS: Thirty children aged 8-13 years with FLE of unknown cause and 39 healthy age-matched controls underwent neuropsychological assessment, structural and diffusion-weighted brain MRI. Patients were grouped as cognitively impaired or unimpaired, and their white matter diffusion properties were compared wit

The disorder of autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy has recently been identified, and is now delineated in detail. A phenotypically homogeneous group of five families from Australia, Britain and Canada, containing 47 affected individuals, was studied. The largest family contained 25 affected individuals spanning six generations. This disorder is characterized by clusters of brief nocturnal motor seizures, with hyperkinetic or tonic manifestations. Subjects often experienced an aura, and remained aware throughout the attacks. Seizures occurred in clusters (mean eight attacks/nigh

PURPOSE: Decision-making is crucial to daily life and can impact our society as well as economic conditions. Although the frontal lobes have been identified as important for decision-making, this capacity has only been studied to a limited extent in frontal lobe epilepsy and not at all after frontal lobe resection (FLR) for epilepsy. This study aimed to explore decision-making under ambiguity after FLR for epilepsy.
METHODS: Fourteen patients having undergone FLR for epilepsy completed the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) which is a widely used tool to measure decision-making under ambiguity. Iowa Ga

OBJECTIVES: Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) surgery is the second most common focal resective surgery for drug-resistant epilepsy. Not many studies are available regarding the long-term surgical outcome of FLE. We studied the longitudinal outcome and predictors of seizure outcome following FLE surgery in a sizeable cohort of patients.
MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 73 consecutive patients who underwent FLE surgery between January 1997 and May 2015 with a minimum follow-up of 1 year (range 1-16 years) were studied. Primary outcome was seizure freedom at last follow-up (Engel Class IA). "Seizure f

We report a patient with frontal lobe epilepsy due to a right frontal astrocytoma (WHO Grade III) in whom two ictal SPECTs (single photon emission tomography) were performed during two seizures with different semiology and different EEG seizure patterns. Subtraction of ictal and interictal SPECT showed right lateral frontal hyperperfusion during a left face clonic seizure, and right mesial fronto-polar hyperperfusion during a subclinical seizure. This report demonstrates that ictal SPECT may reflect different seizure semiology from the frontal lobe of the same individual and that simultaneous

In 1999, Hirose et al. reported a Japanese family with autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy (ADNFLE) associated with a neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α4 subunit mutation (S252L). We followed the siblings of this family, and found that the elder brother had Asperger's disorder without mental retardation (MR) and the younger brother had autistic disorder with profound MR. The clinical epileptic features of the siblings were very similar, and both had deficits in socialization, but their cognitive development differed markedly. It thus seems that epilepsy is the direct ph

Frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) surgery is the second most common surgery performed to treat pharmacoresistant epilepsy. Yet, little is known about long-term seizure outcome following frontal lobectomy. The aim of this study is to investigate the trends in longitudinal outcome and identify potential prognostic indicators in a cohort of FLE patients investigated using modern diagnostic techniques. We reviewed 70 patients who underwent a frontal lobectomy between 1995 and 2003 (mean follow-up 4.1 +/- 3 years). Data were analysed using survival analysis and multivariate regression with Cox proportion

There have been few studies of the psychopathology of patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). The majority of studies of both inter-ictal and post-ictal psychoses have strongly suggested the influence of temporal lobe disturbance on psychoses. Patients with organic brain damage or schizophrenia, however, sometimes show frontal lobe dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to better understand the effect, if any, of frontal lobe disturbance and seizure on psychopathology. Patients were divided into four groups based on epilepsy type and preceding seizures; 8 with FLE/inter-ictal psychosis,
