After some patients were exposed to a blood product from a donor with Creutzfeld-Jakob disease, Winnipeg hospitals had to decide whether to inform them of the possibly minuscule health risk. The Salvation Army Grace Hospital decided to inform its patients, citing their fundamental right to facts regarding their own health; their need to make a responsible, informed decision regarding donation of their own blood or organs; and the need to maintain the trust and confidence of the public in the wake of the Krever inquiry.

The term 'security hospital' is used for a variety of facilities including forensic hospitals and prison hospitals, which, because of their mission, the nature of their work, and the populations they serve-or because of the authority under which they operate-place the staff at considerable risk of ethical violations related to either clinical care or to forensic activities. The problem of divided loyalties is of special concern in security hospitals. Ethics principles particularly at risk are confidentiality and informed consent. Where there are cultural disparities between the staff and the p

BACKGROUND: Medical ethics is an applied branch of ethics that addresses the moral issues and challenges encountered in clinical practice. M … e with clinical practice, pre-service orientation on medical ethics, in-service training on medical ethics, institutional ethics committee, clinical communication skills, clinical leadership skills, knowledge of medical ethics, and attitude towards medical ethics were significantly associated with adherence to medical ethics. Therefore, the implementation of various st …

Sometimes medical errors should not be disclosed. We report a case of semen samples exchange, during a homologous artificial insemination procedure, where a bioethics consultation was required. The bioethics consultation addressed ethical and legal elements in play, supporting non-disclosure to some of the subjects involved. Through a proper methodology, gathering factual and juridical elements, a consultant can show when a moral dilemma between values and rights-privacy versus fatherhood, in our case-is unsubstantial, in a given context, because of the groundlessness of the value or the right

Ethics education in biomedical research in India is frequently limited to regulatory compliance, with inadequate emphasis on ethical reasoning, contextual vulnerability, and deliberative review processes. As part of the Silver Jubilee of the Institutional Ethics Committee of St John's Medical College Hospital, a one-day preconference workshop titled "Responsible Researchers and Reviewers: Ethics of Good Clinical Practice" was conducted during the 13th International Conference of Ethics Education. The workshop employed case-based, interdisciplinary discussions focusing on vulnerability, ethics

Contemporary biomedical ethics has been shaped largely by principle-based and outcome-oriented frameworks, yet these approaches insufficiently account for the role of character in clinical judgement and professional formation on which their fruitful use depends. This paper develops a systems-aware virtue-ethical framework for medical education in which professionalism is understood as a sustained mode of professional agency arising from the coordinated exercise of cultivated moral and epistemic character, clinical competence, and practical wisdom within institutional conditions. Drawing on neo

Academic journal publications may be retracted following institutional investigations that confirm allegations of research misconduct. Retraction notices can provide insight into the role institutional investigations play in the decision to retract a publication. Through a content analysis of 7,318 retraction notices published between 1927 and 2019 and indexed by the Web of Science, we found that most retraction notices (73.7%) provided no information about institutional investigations that may have led to retractions. A minority of the retraction notices (26.3%) mentioned an institutional inv

INTRODUCTION: The surgical intervention approach to insulinomas in proximity to the main pancreatic duct remains controversial. Standard pancreatic resection is recommended by several guidelines; however, enucleation (EN) still attracts surgeons with less risk of late exocrine/endocrine insufficiency, despite a higher postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) rate. Recently, the efficacy and safety of preoperative pancreatic stent placement before the EN have been demonstrated. Thus, a multicentre open-label study is being conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of stent placement in impro

Does it make sense to teach ethics in an unethical setting? Should teachers who work in morally compromised institutions make an effort to introduce biomedical ethics to the curriculum? Using the medical establishment in contemporary India as a window to understanding the challenge of teaching ethics in an unethical setting, this article attempts to discuss issues pertaining to ethics education in institutions with a weak ethical climate. Putting ethics into practice is the essence of ethics education and in this the integrity of the teacher and the moral environment of the institution play si

Patients, families, and health care providers have a right to expect that ethics consultants can deal competently with the complex issues that they are asked to address. The Society for Health and Human Values-Society for Bioethics Consultation Task Force on Standards for Bioethics Consultation explored core competencies and related issues in ethics consultation. This position paper summarizes the content of the resulting Task Force Report, which included nine general conclusions: 1) U.S. societal context makes "ethics facilitation" an appropriate approach to ethics consultation; 2) ethics fac

INTRODUCTION: A major change in the ethics framework for preventive HIV vaccine trials worldwide is the release of the UNAIDS 2021 ethical considerations in HIV prevention trials. This new guidance comes at an exciting time when there are multiple HIV vaccine efficacy trials in the field. Research Ethics Committees (RECs) or Institutional Review Boards are a most likely audience for these guidelines. Our objective is to highlight shifts in ethics recommendations from the earlier 2012 UNAIDS guidance.
DISCUSSION: We review recommendations related to four key issues, namely standard of preventi

INTRODUCTION: Air pollution is a significant global health concern, with studies from the USA and Europe linking long-term exposure to respiratory issues and poor school attendance in children. While Indian cities experience much higher pollution levels, the impact on lung development in Indian children remains unclear. This study aims to assess the burden of impaired lung function in Indian children and identify key factors contributing to pollution-induced lung injury.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This longitudinal, prospective cohort study is conducted in four cities categorised by particulate ma

Research integrity underpins credible scientific research. Whistleblowing on research fraud, including data falsification, fabrication, and plagiarism, is critical for identifying flawed publications. Here, we investigated whistleblowers' roles in the retraction of Iran-affiliated, medically related publications between 2014 and 2024 and documented whistleblowers' motives and journal editors' perspectives. We used a structured questionnaire to interview 18 whistleblowers, 10 members of editorial boards, and four editors-in-chief. We identified three dominant whistleblower motives: commitment t

As pediatric hematology/oncology (PHO) becomes more complex and sub-subspecialized, dedicated PHO ethicists have emerged as sub-subspecialists focused on addressing ethical issues encountered in clinical and research practices. PHO physicians and other clinicians with advanced training in bioethics contribute to the field through ethics research, education, and ethics consultation services. Furthermore, there exists a newer generation of PHO trainees interested in bioethics. This review details the experiences of current PHO ethicists, providing a blueprint for future educational, research and
