In orthopaedic clinical research, as in other fields, sex and gender-specific analyses are not consistently performed, despite evidence of sex differences in outcomes. Both institutional review boards (IRBs) and journal editors have a role in impacting the rate at which such analyses are performed and reported. The authority, responsibilities, and potential actions of IRBs are discussed herein, with the aim of setting investigator expectations and propelling changes to the study plan before the research is initiated.

Researchers and research participants increasingly support returning clinically actionable genetic research findings to participants, but researchers may lack the skills and resources to do so. In response, a genetic counsellor-led program to facilitate the return of clinically actionable findings to research participants was developed to fill the identified gap in research practice and meet Australian research guidelines. A steering committee of experts reviewed relevant published literature and liaised with researchers, research participants and clinicians to determine the scope of the progr

The purpose of this column is to consider if research using only an interview should be evaluated by an institutional review board (IRB) or if it may be considered exempt. A review of atrocities committed by researchers both in the biomedical and psychosocial domains will be considered as a backdrop to the discussion. Issues that plague IRBs will be examined including lack of transparency, overreach of the process, and stipulations that change the nature of research. Finally, recommendations for reform will be entertained.

BACKGROUND: The validation of measurement instruments requires not only psychometric rigor but also transparent reporting of ethical principles to ensure the protection of human participants and research integrity. However, the extent to which ethical aspects are adequately reported in validation studies conducted in Peru remains unknown.
METHODS: A descriptive study was conducted including validation studies published between 2021 and 2024 by authors affiliated with Peruvian institutions and indexed in Scopus. Reporting of ethics committee approval, informed consent, assent, data confidentia

BACKGROUND: The ethics committee has the responsibility to comply with the rules and guidelines regarding oversight of all human research activities, particularly when the research study involves vulnerable people. It also has the role of educating researchers on ethical issues, scientific truthfulness, preventing misconduct and conflicts of interest. In our study we evaluate and benchmark the function of the local ethical committees across the country from the researchers point-of-view.
METHODS: We employed an online IRB-RAT survey to measure perspectives of investigators towards IRB functio

During a consensus conference in Lugano, Switzerland, 175 statements on controlled clinical trials were drafted by 47 representatives from academia, governmental registration agencies and industry in nine countries. Their opinion on these statements was similar to that of 47 'matched pairs' who did not attend the conference. Thus, the opinion of participants and non-participants appears to reflect the general opinion of those currently involved in designing, conducting and analysing controlled clinical trials. The Lugano statements give answers to the following questions: Is the controlled cli

BACKGROUND: As there is little Indian data about severity, frequency and types of research related injuries, costs involved and policies regarding compensation, this study was conducted to review the present Indian scenario.
METHODS: The study was carried out in three parts; a questionnaire-based survey, in-depth interviews, and a review of informed consent and insurance documents of projects submitted to three ethics committees.
RESULTS: 47% of investigators were either unaware of, or had not understood, the legal requirements and depended on sponsors to manage these issues, whereas 74% of

OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify and characterize barriers faced by researchers studying abortion in academic medical centers in the United States. We specifically focused on regulatory restrictions on abortion research related to institutional review board (IRB) or research ethics committee interpretations of Subpart B of the 2001 Code of Federal Regulations, which states that researchers cannot take part in decisions involving the timing, method, or procedures used to terminate a pregnancy. We aimed to document investigators' experiences obtaining approval from their IRBs and to identify obs

INTRODUCTION: Volunteer support for patients and families at the end of life provides many benefits for the beneficiaries. New technologies could be a necessary resource in the accompaniment although, if there is little literature on palliative care volunteering in general, specifically on volunteering and new technologies, we find little information on the subject. Therefore, the aim of this study is to implement and evaluate a training program for palliative care volunteers using new technologies in order to begin accompanying patients and families in hospital or at home.

Academic journal publications may be retracted following institutional investigations that confirm allegations of research misconduct. Retraction notices can provide insight into the role institutional investigations play in the decision to retract a publication. Through a content analysis of 7,318 retraction notices published between 1927 and 2019 and indexed by the Web of Science, we found that most retraction notices (73.7%) provided no information about institutional investigations that may have led to retractions. A minority of the retraction notices (26.3%) mentioned an institutional inv

BACKGROUND: This paper discusses the contentious issue of reuse of stored biological samples and data obtained from research participants in past clinical research to answer future ethical and scientifically valid research questions. Many countries have regulations and guidelines that guide the use and exportation of stored biological samples and data. However, there are variations in regulations and guidelines governing the reuse of stored biological samples and data in Sub-Saharan Africa including Malawi.
DISCUSSION: The current research ethics regulations and guidelines in Malawi do not al

Ethical human subjects research must have an acceptable risk-benefit ratio, which requires that the net risks participants face be proportionate to the research's social value. Yet existing scholarship does not explain what makes risks proportionate to social value. Here, I distinguish internal and external senses of proportionality and argue that it is internal proportionality that is the proper object of IRB/REC review. I propose understanding internal proportionality in terms of a literal ratio of expected health effects; I also argue against the alternative of attempting to assess proporti

In the context of clinical research, the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), as required by Article 35 of the GDPR 2016/679, is an essential tool to ensure the compliant and responsible processing of personal data, particularly health and genetic data. The adoption of the DPIA addresses the need to safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms of data subjects in high-risk scenarios, such as multicenter studies and the use of innovative technologies. This article analyzes the ethical, regulatory, and organizational value of the DPIA in clinical trials, highlighting operational challenges

OBJECTIVES: To assess the process involved in obtaining ethical approval for a single-centre study involving geographically dispersed subjects with an uncommon genetic disorder.
DESIGN: Observational data of the application process to 53 local research ethics committees (LRECs) throughout Wales, England and Scotland. The Multicentre Research Ethics Committee (MREC) for Wales had already granted approval.
RESULTS: Application to the 53 LRECs required 24,552 sheets of paper and took two months of the researcher's time. The median time taken for approval was 39 days with only seven (13%) of com
