Exophthalmos and eyelid retraction are typical symptoms of many orbital or systemic diseases, Graves' orbitopathy being the commonest. Independently from the cause, both may increase evaporation with drying of the ocular surfaces resulting in pain, tearing, and photophobia. The structural integrity of the cornea may also be damaged with possible compromise of the visual function. Acute onset of exophthalmos and/or eyelid retraction deserves maximum attention. In order to avoid corneal decompensation and waiting for a more definitive treatment, eye lubricants, moisture chambers, swimming goggle…

Exophthalmos may be due to an inflammatory process or to tumor formation. Inflammatory processes are most likely to occur in children and young adults. Tumors are the most common cause of exophthalmos in adults.Since the advent of chemotherapy and the antibiotics, rarely does orbital cellulitis develop from sinal infection. Tumors causing exophthalmos are likely to be benign if they arise from the frontal sinus and malignant if they arise from the maxillary and ethmoid sinuses.

INTRODUCTION: Proptosis due to intraorbital process is frequent and secondary to various aetiologies. Its findings in ENT practice is the sign of a serious complication. The purpose of this study is to review a series of patients who presented an exophtalmy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 15 patients with exophthalmos complicating a rhinosinusal benign disease, diagnosed and treated in our department between January 2003 and December 2010. As their management is different, we excluded all cases of orbital cellulitis.
RESULTS: Average age of presentation was 38…

We report the rare case of a term newborn with an excessively large congenital, intracranial teratoma expanding into the right orbita and maxilla. The main symptoms were a total unilateral exophthalmos, a tumorous mass in the right cheek, macrocephaly with wide sutures, and a bulging fontanel. The diagnosis was confirmed by sonography, computed tomography and an exploratory excision from the retromaxillary region.

Malignant exophthalmos or the ophthalmic component of Graves' disease is a functionally impairing and cosmetically deforming disorder of orbital tissue, separate from the sympathetic effects of thyrotoxicosis. The deposition of immune complexes of thyroglobulin and its antibodies within orbital muscles results in progressive exophthalmos, ophthalmoplegia, chemosis, and lid fullness. Increasing intraorbital edema and optic nerve tension may produce irreversible retinal ischemia. If unresponsive to medical treatment, patients exhibiting increasing loss of visual acuity are therefore candidates f…
