Seven patients had occult malignant neoplasms either originating in or extending to the infratemporal fossa. Common symptoms were facial pain centered over the temporomandibular joint and facial numbness. These symptoms were sometimes associated with middle ear effusion and trismus. Multiple biopsies are often necessary to establish the diagnosis. The average delay in diagnosis from first symptom was 14 months. Infratemporal fossa neoplasia belongs in the differential diagnosis of facial pain.

Salivary gland neoplasms are a relatively uncommon disease, with nearly one case per 100.000 adults estimated per year and an overall incidence of 1% of all neoplasms. The benign neoplasms are majority and the prognosis depends on the histologic type, grade, localization, soft tissue infiltration, regional and distant metastasis. The main treatment is surgery with caution to facial nerve in the major salivary glands, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy in selected cases. The objective of this review is to provide the lector an historic approach about salivary gland diseases treatment, wi

Most neoplasms arising in the parotid gland are benign. Patients with cancer of the parotid gland usually present with normal facial nerve function. In these patients, findings at the time of surgery will guide the management of the facial nerve, with most surgeons preserving the nerve unless it is adherent to, or imbedded in, a malignant tumor. In cases where the margins of resection are close to the facial nerve, adjuvant radiotherapy administered postoperatively has significantly improved local control of disease. The minority of patients with parotid cancer who present with facial nerve pa

OBJECTIVE: To compare the trends and specific outcomes of patients treated surgically for parotid neoplasms between 1994 and 2005 with those of patients who were treated between 1985 and 1993 at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto and to identify preoperative indicators of malignancy.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed that included all patients who received treatment from 1994 to 2005 at Mount Sinai Hospital. The results of this review was compared with those of another group at the same institution.
RESULTS: The study included 242 patients. Of these patients, 183 (75.6%) had b

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical and radiographic characteristics of vascular loops occupying the internal auditory canal.
STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: A retrospective review of patients with lesions initially suggestive of neoplasm, such as acoustic neuroma, who were subsequently found to have vascular compression of the facial and/or cochleovestibular nerves. The symptoms suggestive of this retrocochlear pathology, including vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, hemifacial spasm, and facial paralysis, were assessed. Subsequent evaluation with MRI revealed findings suggestive of intracannalicular neo

SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Facial nerve schwannoma is extremely uncommon. Despite its rarity, it is considered the most common facial nerve tumor and potentially affects any segment of the nerve. Presenting symptoms vary depending on the location of the neoplasm. Tumors pertaining to the extratemporal course of the nerve mainly appear as an asymptomatic parotid mass. We present a rare case of schwannoma of the zygomatic branch of the right facial nerve that was surgically resected, without facial nerve injury.

Persistent idiopathic facial pain, once called atypical facial pain, rarely anticipates the detection of a lung carcinoma. Thirty-six cases of intractable facial pain secondary to lung neoplasm are described in the literature. The onset of facial pain usually precedes the onset of symptoms and signs due to lung cancer by several months and therefore it should be considered, when present, as a possible marker for an early diagnosis of tumour. We report a case of intractable facial pain associated with metastatic lung cancer in a non-smoker.

Facial numbness and dysesthesia have not been emphasized as presenting features in spontaneous internal carotid artery dissection. Progressive facial pain, accompanied by oculosympathetic paresis, altered taste, and facial numbness suggest the possibility of basal skull neoplasm. We describe a patient, with previously undiscovered fibromuscular dysplasia, who presented with severe neck and face pain, dysgeusia, oculosympathetic paresis, and markedly reduced facial sensation due to a spontaneous vascular dissection. Altered facial sensation should now be included in the symptomatology of intern

Generally, typical symptoms are significant for malignant parotid tumours: The infiltration of surrounding structures and facial paralysis. A case is reported where a benign parotid tumour (lymphadenitis) caused facial paralysis. Parotidectomy and the removal of the lymph node near the stylomastoid foramen led to complete restitution. A review of the literature of the past 40 years mentions 16 cases of benign neoplasms of the parotid gland that caused facial paralysis, such as pleomorphic adenoma, Warthin's tumour, oncocytoma, benign parotid cysts, chronic parotitis, lymphadenitis and parotid

INTRODUCTION: Parotid gland tumours comprise 3% of all head and neck tumours. Although uncommon they are a histologically diverse group of tumors. The WHO classification of salivary gland tumours from 2005 recognizes 24 different malignant subtypes. They present different clinical courses and varying prognoses. Nearly 80% of salivary gland tumours are located in the parotid gland.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our study evaluated retrospectively 445 patients with parotid gland tumours treated in our hospital in the period between 2007 and 2014. We analyzed surgical treatment and histological diagnosi

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to report the incidence and clinical course of a series of patients who were misdiagnosed with Bell's palsy and were eventually proven to have occult neoplasms.
METHODS: Two hundred forty patients with unilateral facial paralysis who were assessed at the facial nerve reanimation clinic, Victoria Hospital, London Health Science Centre, from 2008 through 2017 were reviewed. Persistent paralysis without recovery was the presenting complaint.
RESULTS: Nine patients (3.8%) who were proven to have occult neoplasms initially presented with a diagnosis of Bell's

Facial edema is a relatively frequent clinical presentation encountered in patients seen in allergology and dermatology clinics. The differential diagnosis is broad, and sometimes the definitive diagnosis can be a challenge for the clinician. Facial angioedema itself encompasses different etiopathologies (histaminergic, bradykinergic, etc.) that must be distinguished from other causes of facial edema, such as allergic contact dermatitis, granulomatous conditions, inflammatory causes, infections, neoplasms or paraneoplastic syndromes, autoimmune diseases, among other entities hereby referred as

Various types of parotid gland tumors are discussed from nonneoplastic to both benign and malignant neoplasms. The anatomic relationship of the facial nerve is discussed as it exits the stylomastoid foramen and courses through the parotid gland. The effect of certain tumors on facial nerve function is also characterized. Details on which types of parotid tumors are more likely to affect facial nerve function and different prognostic predictors of return to function are evaluated. In addition, the prognostic value of tumor size and histologic type of parotid tumor is included.

A 74-year-old man was diagnosed with thymic carcinoid metastatic to the mediastinum. Two years later, he developed left and then right facial palsy. Four additional episodes of facial palsy developed within 2 years, followed by an occurrence of nonarteritic ischemic optic neuropathy. While recurrent facial palsy is uncommon, it may occur in the presence of various systemic conditions such as carcinoid, diabetes, infection, and neoplasm. The presence of recurrent facial palsy logically warrants an evaluation for systemic disease.

The individual with a progressive (weeks to months) facial weakness should be considered to have a tumor involving the facial nerve until proved otherwise. All individuals experiencing a facial paralysis must undergo a thorough neurotologic evaluation to establish the etiology. Bell's palsy is a diagnosis by exclusion. While computerized axial tomography (CAT) scans, polytomography and arteriograms are extremely helpful, these studies very often fail to demonstrate intrinsic tumors involving the facial nerve. For this reason all individuals experiencing a progressive facial paralysis should ha

Intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma is a rare benign neoplasm. Due to its rarity, it is not usually a prioritized diagnosis before surgery and may therefore lead to an unintentional treatment error. In this article, we report a single case of intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma. We were able to make a diagnosis with frozen biopsy. A complete resection of the mass while preserving the facial nerve was performed. Herein we present our clinical experience with regards to the treatment process of intraparotid facial nerve schwannoma.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical techniques for parotid gland neoplasm removal have been shaped over the years by the importance of the gland's relationship with the facial nerve, histologic behavior of parotid tumors, and recurrence rates from specific techniques. Parotidectomy with facial nerve dissection has become the procedure of choice in removal of parotid gland neoplasms because of the resulting low recurrence rate. However, these more comprehensive dissections can cause significant postoperative complications, some cosmetically devastating. We propose that a more limited dissection yields a simila

Facial nerve palsy with a parotid mass is usually associated with malignant neoplasm of parotid gland. Its occurrence as a complication of parotid abscess is extremely rare. A literature review revealed only 16 cases of facial nerve palsy associated with suppurative parotitis or parotid abscess were reported. We present a case of deep parotid abscess which is complicated by facial nerve dysfunction. Underlying neoplasia was excluded.

Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common neoplasm of the salivary glands. Though a benign lesion, proper recognition and management of this process is needed to avoid increasing enlargement of the mass, facial nerve impairment, risk of malignant degeneration, and recurrence after surgical resection. The epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment options for this neoplasm are discussed.
