Subcutaneous fat necrosis, a type of panniculitis, is a rare entity that is manifested by painless or painful subcutaneous nodules on the legs, buttocks, or trunk and is associated with pancreatitis or carcinoma of the pancreas, either of which may be asymptomatic. The histopathological findings are pathognomonic and consist of subcutaneous focal fat necrosis and "ghost-like" cells with thick, shadowy walls and no nuclei. Arthritis, particularly of the ankles, is a commonly associated finding. Distant foci of fat necrosis in pancreatic disease are probably due to the local action of hematogeno…

BACKGROUND: Epipericardial fat necrosis (EFN) is a rare disease in which local inflammation and necrosis occur in the adipose tissue surrounding the heart, particularly epicardial fat. Few cases of EFN in which surgical resection was performed have been reported. We report a case of EFN after surgical resection of a right extrapulmonary tumor, in which a malignant disease could not be excluded.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 75-year-old male patient presented with fever and chest pain. A contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan of the chest revealed a lesion, 53 × 48 mm in size, with mixed fatty dens…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is an uncommon, benign process in full-term infants or postmature neonates who experienced a perinatal distress. It is a transient condition of unknown origin; however, hypercalcemia may be a potentially life-threatening complication of this otherwise self-healing process. We report two cases of subcutaneous fat necrosis and discuss the clinical features, etiology, and complications of the disease.

Three cases of nodular-cystic fat necrosis presenting with focal lipomembranous changes are reported. The lesions consisted of solitary (cases 1 and 3) or multiple (case 2) subcutaneous nodules on the upper (case 1) or lower (cases 2 and 3) extremities which had evolved over weeks to years. At surgical excision, solitary or multiple, freely mobile nodules within a cystic cavity were observed. Histologically, encapsulated fat nodules showing variable amounts of necrosis without marked inflammatory changes were present. Focal lipomembranous changes were observed in some nodules. Our observations…

We present two patients with subcutaneous fat necroses (SCFN) in whom endocrinologic studies revealed an association with elevated prostaglandin E (PGE) levels. A boy born after prolonged labor complicated by meconium aspiration developed erythematous, indurated plaques over the back, arms, buttocks, and cheeks at 4 days of age. A biopsy specimen of involved skin showed panniculitis with foci of necrotic adipocytes containing radially arranged, needle-shaped clefts and a granulomatous infiltrate in the septae. Laboratory studies revealed hypercalcemia of 13.6 mg/dl (normal 8.8-10.1 mg/dl), ele

OBJECTIVE: To review the diagnosis and management of fat necrosis after autologous fat transplantation of breast.
METHODS: Based on the latest related literature, the pathology, clinical and radiographic examinations, influence factors, as well as the management of fat necrosis after autologous fat transplantation for breast augmentation and reconstruction were summarized.
RESULTS: Fat necrosis after breast autologous fat transplantation is histologically manifested as hyaline degeneration, fibrosis, and calcification. The diagnosis of fat necrosis includes clinical examination, imaging exam…

We examined 152 aortic valves (AVs), which included 82 postmortem non-dysfunctional AVs (nd-AVs) and 70 surgically removed dysfunctional AVs showing aortic stenosis (AS), aortic regurgitation (AR), or combined AS and AR (AS-R). Fat cells, membranous fat necrosis (MFN), and fat-MFN-related lesions composed of fat cells and/or MFN were found in 127 (83.6%), 110 (72.4%), and 140 (92.1%) of 152 AVs, respectively, and all were associated with older age (P = 0.010, P = 0.022, and P = 0.003, respectively). MFN was associated with fibrous thickening and calcification (both, P = 0.001). Nd-AV fat cells…

Autologous fat grafting is a widely used soft tissue filling technique for facial rejuvenation, favored for its high biocompatibility and long-lasting effects. However, the long-term risk of infection due to alterations in local tissue structure remains unclear. This article reports a case of perforating cellulitis in the frontotemporal region of a 39-year-old female patient 3 years after multiple autologous fat grafting procedures. The patient, with no significant prior medical history or immune compromise, developed sudden redness and swelling in the right temporal region, which rapidly spre

Cellulitis, a diffuse inflammation of connective tissue with severe inflammation of dermal and subcutaneous layers of the skin, is a common lesion in children, usually responsive to systemic antibiotic therapy. However, an unusual course of healing or some nontypical features should call the treating physician to consider and investigate for other diagnoses that might prevent unnecessary treatment and alleviate parental stress. We present a case of posttraumatic fat necrosis, demonstrating some pitfalls in the process of diagnosis.

This study describes the ultrasonographic findings in 14 cows with abdominal fat necrosis. Ultrasonography of the abdomen revealed the presence of heterogeneous hyperechoic masses and hyperechoic omentum with localized masses floating in a hypoechoic peritoneal fluid. A hyperechogenic rim was imaged around both kidneys. The intestines were coated with hyperechoic capsules and the intestinal lumens were constricted. Ultrasonographic examination of the pancreatic parenchyma showed an overall increased echogenicity which was homogenously distributed in 3 cases. A diagnosis of abdominal fat necros…

Subcutaneous fat necrosis (SFN) of the newborn is a variant of lobular panniculitis characterized by focal areas of fat necrosis and a granulomatous infiltrate composed of lymphocytes, histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells. Lipocytes and histiocytes contain needle-shaped clefts in a radial arrangement. Needle-shaped clefts may also be seen within the cytoplasm of multinucleated giant cells.(1-3) We present an unusual example of SFN showing multinucleated giant cells laced with eosinophilic granules. These eosinophilic granules are believed to be released from surrounding degranulating eos…
