The fathers of children with spina bifida.

Health, employment, marital outcome and involvement with the child, of fathers with spina bifida (IF) and with "normal" controls (CF), were analysed at intervals from birth to 18 years. By 10 years IF had poorer reported health than did CF. By 18 years IF had more specific health problems, many being psychosomatic in nature, than CF or index and control mothers. This pattern was also reflected in the GHQ scores; IF had a significantly higher incidence of symptoms than CF. Practical involvement of IF and CF was generally little different but at 18 years 30% of IF were still involved in their ch…

Profiles of Father Involvement among Unmarried Black Fathers and Child Social-Emotional Functioning.

This study examined patterns of father involvement among 2,040 unmarried non-Hispanic Black fathers (M = 25.27 years; SD = 6.51 years) with low income, and their associations with young children's (age 3 years; 50.34% girls) social-emotional functioning. Latent profile analysis revealed four father involvement profiles: high involvement (50.60%); non-resident, moderate involvement (18.09%); highly engaged, but low cognitive stimulation (25.49%); and non-resident, very low involvement (3.82%). Children of highly involved Black fathers exhibited optimal social-emotional functioning compared to c…

Including the fathers' perspective in holistic care. Part 1: Findings on the fathers' experience with childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia.

There is scant work completed on the fathers' experience with the treatment for childhood cancer. The present discussion seeks to make a contribution to deepening our holistic understanding of paediatric treatment for leukaemia by presenting findings on the paternal involvement in, and experience of, treatment for paediatric acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). The understanding will be extended in Part 2 by a detailed examination of specific issues associated with the fathers' hospital experience and in particular, the difficulties they face with restraining their child-patient for treatment.

Fathers' preconception smoking and offspring DNA methylation.

BACKGROUND: Experimental studies suggest that exposures may impact respiratory health across generations via epigenetic changes transmitted specifically through male germ cells. Studies in humans are, however, limited. We aim to identify epigenetic marks in offspring associated with father's preconception smoking. METHODS: We conducted epigenome-wide association studies (EWAS) in the RHINESSA cohort (7-50 years) on father's any preconception smoking (n = 875 offspring) and father's pubertal onset smoking < 15 years (n = 304), using Infinium MethylationEPIC Beadchip arrays, adjusting for offsp

Fathers' Imprisonment and Mothers' Multiple-Partner Fertility.

We consider the intersection between two striking U.S. trends: dramatic increases in the imprisonment of fathers and increases in the proportion of mothers who have children with more than one partner (multiple-partner fertility, or MPF). Using matched longitudinal administrative data that provide unusually comprehensive and accurate information about the occurrence and timing of imprisonment, fertility, and MPF for the population of the state of Wisconsin, we consider the relationship between paternal imprisonment and MPF among unwed mothers. Employing discrete-time event history analysis wit…

Low-income fathers' access to health insurance.

We examine the prevalence and correlates of health insurance status among low-income fathers, a group not previously studied in this context. In a sample of 1,653 low-income fathers from a national urban birth cohort study, 29% had private, 14% had public, and 58% had no insurance. Privately insured fathers had greater levels of human capital than did publicly insured fathers; the latter more closely resembled uninsured fathers than they did privately insured fathers. Multinomial logistic regression analysis indicates that being older, being employed, being married, and having a job offering h…

The occurrence of symptoms in expectant fathers.

A longitudinal study of 91 expectant fathers was done during early, middle, and late pregnancy to determine (a) which fathers were most likely to experience symptoms and (b) the relationship of the symptoms to emotional state. Men who were working-class, black, or who reported that pregnancy was not planned experienced more symptoms during pregnancy. White expectant fathers reported an increase in somatic symptoms as pregnancy progressed; black expectant fathers indicated a decrease. However, black expectant fathers consistently reported more symptoms than white expectant fathers. Symptom mani…

Father involvement in pregnancy and attachment to their baby: Depression and partner relationships in a sample of Black fathers.

Black fathers, particularly those who are low-income, unmarried, and from minoritized communities, face significant barriers to full participation in their children's lives. Prenatal challenges include scheduling conflicts, living arrangements, and relationship dynamics with the child's mother. These factors critically impact early paternal involvement and infant bonding. Despite the importance of father involvement, research on Black fathers' prenatal involvement and infant attachment remains limited. This study examines 75 Black fathers in the United States, investigating how relationship qu…

The total cost of father desertion.

OBJECTIVES: The benefits of paternal investment have long been explored by assessing the impact of father's presence on child wellbeing. Previous studies, however, have only examined the average effect of father's presence on child survivorship. Here we assess the total fitness cost to men of deserting (or the benefit of staying), by considering effects on the entire progeny. We estimate the total number of children that a deserting father can expect to lose due to reduced survivorship over the life course in five populations, and compare this loss to the benefit gains from remarrying a younge

["Disruptive births" and Father representation.].

The following reflection deals with Father representations and their evolution after Disruptive births. It is part of a much wider study tak … he burden of the evolution of the mother-child relationship. At this point we discuss solely of the fathers, their trials, and also the resources they can bring to bear in the work of the maternal psyche when they are well supported.

Three physiological responses in fathers and non-fathers' to vocalizations of typically developing infants and infants with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Children with ASD, even before receiving a formal diagnosis, express atypical patterns of distress vocalizations (namely, episodes of crying). Their cries have higher fundamental frequencies, shorter inter-bout pauses, and fewer utterances. Cries of children with ASD are also perceived differently from other cries, and these perceptual differences may alter parent-infant interaction. This study assessed multiple physiological responses in fathers and non-fathers to atypical distress vocalizations (cries of children with ASD), acoustically matched typical distress vocalizations (cries of typica…

Report of a Father With Congenital Bilateral Absence of the Vas Deferens Fathering a Child With Beare-Stevenson Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Apert, Pfeiffer, and Crouzon syndromes are autosomal dominant diseases characterized by craniosynostosis. They are paternal age … he pathogenic FGFR2 variant c.1124A > G p.Tyr375Cys. By reviewing the literature, we found that BSS fathers are older than BSS mothers (mean age in years: 39 ± 10 vs 30 ± 6, p = 0.006). Male age greater than 34 years and CBAVD are both factors associated with poor spermogram parameters, which may represent an additional selective pressure to sperm carryin …

Father's parenting and father-child relationship among children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Western literature documents impaired father-child interactions in addition to strong evidence of impaired mother-child interactions in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the parenting process of fathers and their engagement in the Asian family with children with ADHD remain unexplored. The authors compared fathering and father-child relationships between children with ADHD and those without ADHD and identified the correlates of these paternal measures. METHODS: Fathering and father-child relationships were compared between 296 children with att…
