Reports on conditions of chronic fatigue associated with other somatopsychic symptoms after acute viral infections have led to the hypothesis of a "chronic fatigue syndrome" (CFS). Historical disease descriptions, like e.g. "myalgic encephalomyelitits", were updated by means of modern virological diagnostic techniques and data analysis. Several viral agents like enteroviruses, Epstein-Barr virus, Human-Herpesvirus 6 and other herpesviruses have been implicated for possible underlying infections. A preliminary disease definition by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) seeks to provide a rationa…

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or post-viral fatigue syndrome is a common disorder, which has been known previously under a variety of different names, i.e., Iceland disease or Royal Free disease. It may occur in epidemics or sporadically. The cause is unknown, with patients complaining of exhaustion, fatigue, muscle aches and pains, and invariable psychiatric symptoms such as emotional lability, poor memory/concentration, and depression. Present-day research points to the cause as a metabolic disorder secondary to persistent viral infection.

Cancer-related fatigue (CRF) is a major clinical problem. This paper integrates the evidence-based literature and professional guidelines to support a proposed systematic approach to CRF diagnosis and management. This approach includes four diagnostic criteria, six steps for routine care and two major evidence-based treatment modalities. These comprise non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions. This approach can reduce CRF management barriers while highlighting the illness trajectory phase when specific interventions will be most effective.

Consider a coffeemaker that offers 12 drink options, a car with more than 700 features on the dashboard, and a mouse pad that's also a clock, calculator, and FM radio. All are examples of "feature bloat", or "featuritis", the result of an almost irresistible temptation to load products with lots of bells and whistles. The problem is that the more features a product boasts, the harder it is to use. Manufacturers that increase a product's capability--the number of useful functions it can perform--at the expense of its usability are exposing their customers to feature fatigue. The authors have co…

Radiotherapy-induced fatigue is a common early and chronic side-effect of irradiation, reported in up to 80 and 30% of patients during radiation therapy and at follow-up visits, respectively. It is frequently underestimated by medical and nursing staff, only about 50% of patients discuss it with a physician and in one fourth of cases any intervention is proposed to the patient. The patients rarely expect fatigue to be a side-effect of treatment. The etiology of this common symptom, its correlates and prevalence are poorly understood. In numerous studies the level and time course of fatigue was…
