Feather in Wharton's Duct: A Case Report.

This report highlights a remarkable case of a 12-year-old boy with a suspected foreign body obstructing Wharton's duct. The patient came to the clinic complaining of pain and swelling in the right submandibular area, as well as a history of using a feather to floss his teeth. The CT scan failed to detect the foreign body so, based on the detailed history the patient provided, surgical exploration was performed under general anesthesia and a 2 cm feather shaft was successfully retrieved from the duct. This case underscores the limitations of imaging techniques in certain scenarios and highlight

Duodenal perforation caused by a bird feather.

Ingestion of gastrointestinal (GI) foreign bodies represents a challenging clinical scenario. The greater risk is at extremes of age, in those wearing dentures, alcoholics and mentally handicapped. We present a case of duodenal perforation caused by a bird feather. A 64-year-old man was presented with abdominal pain for 4 days. Abdominal examination showed signs of peritonitis. The erect abdominal x-ray showed free gas under diaphragm. Exploratory laparotomy showed purulent fluid, but no definite site of perforation could be found. So the abdomen was closed with a drain in Morison's pouch. The

The terminal structures of feather keratin mRNA.

Terminal labeling of embryonic feather keratin mRNA with [3H]KBH4 followed by digestion with ribonuclease T1 and T2, alkaline phosphatase, snake venom phosphodiesterase, and nucleotide pyrophosphatase and analysis of the products by high voltage paper electrophoresis, indicated the presence of the sequence m7G(5')ppp(5')N at the 5'-end of the mRNA. Ribonuclease T1 and A digests of the terminally labeled, and also of unlabeled mRNA followed by fractionation on denaturing polyacrylamide gels indicated the presence of polyadenylate tracts ranging in size from 45 to 165 nucleotide at the 3'-end of

Postauricular feather foreign body in an infant.

A male infant presented with reduced oral intake, low-grade fever and postauricular erythema. Clinical examination revealed a soft, tender swelling posteroinferior to the mastoid tip with a dull tympanic membrane on otoscopy. Cross-sectional imaging did not show any evidence of middle ear infection or mastoiditis. However, there was minimal change in clinical status despite trialling various intravenous antibiotics. One week after admission, a thin, white foreign body self-extruded from the upper part of the postauricular skin, recognised by the child's parents as a feather from their sofa cus

Paediatric feather duvet hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

A previously well 12-year-old boy was admitted with a second insidious episode of dyspnoea, dry cough, anorexia, weight loss and chest pain. At admission, he had an oxygen requirement, significantly impaired lung function and reduced exercise tolerance. Initial forced expiratory volume in 1 s was 26%; a 3 min exercise test stopped at 1 min 50 when saturations dropped to 85%. CT scan showed ground-glass nodularity with lymphadenopathy. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) for Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and viruses were negative, and microbiology results for the BAL were reported in the absence of h

Presenting features of feather duvet lung.

BACKGROUND: Feather duvet lung (FDL) is a rare subgroup of bird fancier's lung. It is caused by inhalation of organic dust due to goose or duck feathers in duvets or pillows. METHODS: A retrospective review of the medical records of 13 patients with FDL was performed to assess the specific history and review clinical characteristics of patients with this disease. RESULTS: All patients were female with a mean age of 53 years (26-71). They were recently exposed to feather duvets (6), pillows (1) or both (6). Specific histories were duvets or pillows filled with raw goose feathers from their ow…

Comparison of gamithromycin residue depletion in yellow-feather and white-feather broilers after one single subcutaneous injection.

This study aimed to compare the residue depletion of gamithromycin in yellow-feather and white-feather broilers, using Sanhuang and Arbor Acres chickens as typical examples, respectively. Each breed (54 chickens) received a single subcutaneous dose of gamithromycin at 7.5 mg/kg bodyweight (BW). Tissues, including muscle, skin + fat, liver, kidney, and injection site, were collected at 6 h, 3, 5, 7, 10, 14, 21, 28, and 35 d postdrug administration. Gamithromycin concentrations in these tissues were determined using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). T

Origin of feathers: Feather beta (beta) keratins are expressed in discrete epidermal cell populations of embryonic scutate scales.

The feathers of birds develop from embryonic epidermal lineages that differentiate during outgrowth of the feather germ. Independent cell populations also form an embryonic epidermis on scutate scales, which consists of peridermal layers, a subperiderm, and an alpha stratum. Using an antiserum (anti-FbetaK) developed to react specifically with the beta (beta) keratins of feathers, we find that the feather-type beta keratins are expressed in the subperiderm cells of embryonic scutate scales, as well as the barb ridge lineages of the feather. However, unlike the subperiderm of scales, which is l…

Research Progress on the Pre-Treatment of Chicken Feathers for Biogas Production.

Keratin is an abundant, recalcitrant structural protein that constitutes the primary component of several animal wastes, particularly chicken feathers. Because of their potential and availability, various technologies, such as anaerobic biodigestion, have been used to degrade keratin and transform feathers into biogas and other value-added products. However, due to their fibrous architecture and rigid structure, keratinous materials are elastic, water-insoluble, and enzymatically resistant, which makes natural degradation difficult. In this sense, before using chicken feathers as feedstock in …

The color of greater flamingo feathers fades when no cosmetics are applied.

Greater flamingos use cosmetic coloration by spreading uropygial secretions pigmented with carotenoids over their feathers, which makes the plumage redder. Because flamingos inhabit open environments that receive direct solar radiation during daytime, and carotenoids bleach when exposed to solar radiation, we expected that the plumage color would fade if there is no maintenance for cosmetic purposes. Here, we show that the concentrations of pigments inside feathers and on the surface of feathers were correlated, as well as that there was a correlation between the concentrations of pigments in …

Monitoring the uptake of live avian vaccines by their detection in feathers.

Protection against diseases caused by the avian viruses, Marek's disease, Infectious laryngotracheitis, chicken anemia and turkey meningoencephalitis is achieved by live vaccines. The application quality is important to assure proper uptake in commercial flocks. We describe a novel evaluation method for the vaccination process by sequential monitoring the vaccine viruses in feathers. Feather collection is easy, non-invasive and non-lethal for the birds, therefore advantageous for monitoring purposes. To demonstrate the vaccine virus presence, an innovative assay of nested real-time amplificati…

Using ptilochronology to determine daily mercury deposition in feathers of nestling waterbirds.

Feathers are commonly used biomarkers of mercury (Hg) contamination in waterbird species. Most studies that analyze waterbird feathers for Hg content report concentrations on a per-unit mass basis. While this is appropriate for intraspecific comparisons, we suggest a more effective method for studies comparing multiple species of similar size and with similar foraging habits. Ptilochronology is a technique for determining the rate of feather growth in individuals based on their nutritional condition. When paired with Hg analysis, feather growth rates can be used to calculate the average daily …

Shh-Bmp2 signaling module and the evolutionary origin and diversification of feathers.

To examine the role of development in the origin of evolutionary novelties, we investigated the developmental mechanisms involved in the formation of a complex morphological novelty-branched feathers. We demonstrate that the anterior-posterior expression polarity of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) and Bone morphogenetic protein 2 (Bmp2) in the primordia of feathers, avian scales, and alligator scales is conserved and phylogenetically primitive to archosaurian integumentary appendages. In feather development, derived patterns of Shh-Bmp2 signaling are associated with the development of evolutionarily nove…

Sequins, satin, feathers and fur - collaborative costume and the ageing burlesque body.

This article explores the efficacy of costume within the context of new or neo-burlesque performance and examines what costume 'does' on stage for older performers. It brings together scholarship on burlesque performance and female ageing and introduces a third theoretical dimension, that of critical costume. The article investigates the role costume plays in burlesque performances and the extent to which it partners with the bodies of older performers both during the creative process and on stage. Adopting object-oriented storytelling as methodology, interviews with professional and semi-prof

We present a method for AHR1 genotyping using plucked feathers as a source of RNA. The method is extremely robust, requires minimal sample processing and handling, and eliminates the need for blood sampling or tissue collection from the species of interest. Developmental genetics and psychopathology: some new feathers for a fine old hat.

Without even knowing of their existence, Mendel discovered how genes operate when they are completely penetrant, although they rarely are, at least with respect to human personality and psychopathology; yet quantitative genetics results have conclusively demonstrated their substantial macrolevel influence. Now we need to understand just how incompletely penetrant genes make their contributions to psychopathology. Exciting new developments in molecular genetics and epigenetics provide new insight into gene action in principle but have been of limited value so far in understanding the emergence

Case Report on the Management of Bird Feathers and Droplet Infection in Lungs.

Birds can carry most of the diseases. The few diseases are people's bird feathers and droplets infection in the lungs. Because it occurs due to very close and regular contact with the birds, it affects the human immune system. It is believed that pollutants affect lung function by causing airway inflammation. At least in some circumstances, many common infections can spread through the air. A male patient, age 20, was brought to AVBR Hospital, complaining of cough, runny nose, dyspnea, etc. A diagnostic thoracic CT scan and chest X-ray were performed, along with a blood investigation. Medical …
