During a 15-month period, 47 elderly female patients admitted to hospital with a fractured neck of femur were studied immediately prior to discharge, in comparison with 34 elderly female control patients undergoing elective surgery who had been admitted over the same period to the same orthopaedic wards. The principal differences between the two populations were that the fracture patients had a lower forearm trabecular bone density, with lower bodyweight (both lower muscle mass and lower fat content), increased body sway, worse eyesight and reduced mental acuity. The serum biochemistry of the

In order to obtain an early prediction for segmental collapse of the femoral head after femoral neck fracture, we have studied in 53 cases of the femoral neck fracture using 99mTC-MDP scintimetry. According to the radionuclide uptake ratio of the femoral heads, we can estimate the gravity of the avascular necrosis of the femoral head after fracture and recognize the repair process in the necrotic head. Fifty-three cases of fresh fracture were examined by sequential scintigraphy before operation and during follow up examinations after operation. The radionuclide uptake were all increased in 3 t

Eleven ipsilateral neck and shaft fractures of the femur in 11 patients (4 females, 7 males) were treated between May 1987 and December 1990 at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. University of Louisville, Trauma center level one. The mean age was 34.5 (16-60) years. All patients sustained their injuries from high energy trauma (8 traffic accidents, 3 falls). All neck fractures were closed and there were 8 closed and 3 open (grade I, grade II, grade IIIA = one each) shaft fractures. All fractures were operated on the fracture table and all were stabilized with the Russell-Taylor reconstructi

Intracapsular femoral neck fractures of patients younger than 65 should be treated by open or closed reduction and internal fixation with two to four lag screws. Garden I fractures should also be treated by percutaneous screw fixation to prevent a delayed dislocation. If the fracture is dislocated (Garden II-IV) immediate reduction and internal fixation is mandatory to improve the blood flow by "unkinking" of the supporting vessels. The rate of femoral head necrosis is about ten to fifty percent, according to the grade of posttraumatic dislocation. Early stages of total or partial femoral head

Bilateral simultaneous fracture of the neck of the femur is an extremely rare injury; out of the reported cases, 50% are caused by electrical shock. We reported a rare case of simultaneous bilateral femur neck fracture caused by electrical shock as a part of spiritual therapy. The patient underwent bilateral open reduction and internal fixation with cannulated screws. Unfortunately, the fixation failed, and the patient underwent bilateral total hip arthroplasty. The patient was satisfied with the outcome at the final follow-up.

Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant and could decrease bone mineral density. So patients with Marfan syndrome could vulnerable to trauma in old ages. We present the first report, to the best of our knowledge, of a rare fracture of the femoral neck with a minor traumatic history in a juvenile Marfan syndrome patient whose physis is still open. Although the patient is young, her bone mineral density was low and the geometry of femur is changed like old ages. The femur neck fracture in children is very rare and only caused by high energy trauma, we concluded that the Marfan syndrome makes th…

Non-traumatic fractures mostly present a diagnostic dilemma. Fracture risk is less reported in non-epileptic seizures. Various metabolic conditions leading to a decrease in bone mineral density may also cause fractures. The authors report the case of non-traumatic fracture of an old woman who presented with fever, shortness of breath and right shoulder pain without any history of epilepsy. Episode of seizures was noted prior to admission. The patient had poorly controlled diabetes mellitus and severe hypoglycaemia was noted at the time of admission. She was admitted to a medical ward for a sev

AIM: We aim to assess post-operative CRP serum values in a cohort of patients who underwent surgical treatment for neck of femur fracture (NOF#), and whether CRP is a valid tool for the assessment of these patients post-operatively.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Retrospective analysis was carried out on all NOF#'s admitted for surgical fixation between August 2015 and July 2016 in a district general hospital. Primary analysis included serum CRP levels until day 7 post-operatively, with secondary analysis of any documented evidence of post-operative complications (medical and surgical) within 30 d
