Semiconducting hematite facilitates microbial and abiotic reduction of chromium.

Semi-conducting Fe oxide minerals, such as hematite, are well known to influence the fate of contaminants and nutrients in many environmental settings through sorption and release of Fe(II) resulting from microbial or abiotic reduction. Studies of Fe oxide reduction by adsorbed Fe(II) have demonstrated that reduction of Fe(III) at one mineral surface can result in the release of Fe(II) on a different one. This process is termed "Fe(II) catalyzed recrystallization" and is believed to be the result of electron transfer through semi-conducting Fe (hydr)oxides. While it is well understood that Fe(

Iron from complex salts and its bioavailability to rats.

Complex iron compounds are being used as iron suppliers. Bioavailability of their iron was tested through several parameters. A biological iron prophylactic study in rats was simultaneously carried out with three of these iron complexes products: ferric orthophosphate, iron sodium EDTA and iron glycine chelate. Their iron biodisponibility was compared to that of ferrous sulfate. Five low iron diets were prepared according to AOAC method. Four of them were enriched to a level of 20 mg Fe/kg, with ferrous sulfate and the 3 iron complexes salts under study. These diets were offered to 5 groups of

Extradiol oxidative cleavage of catechols by ferrous and ferric complexes of 1,4,7-triazacyclononane: insight into the mechanism of the extradiol catechol dioxygenases.

The major oxygenation product of catechol by dioxygen in the presence of FeCl(2) or FeCl(3), 1,4,7-triazacyclononane (TACN), and pyridine in methanol is the extradiol cleavage product 2-hydroxymuconic semi-aldehyde methyl ester (Lin, G.; Reid, G.; Bugg, T. D. H. J. Chem. Soc. Chem. Commun. 2000, 1119--1120). Under these conditions, extradiol cleavage of a range of 3- and 4-substituted catechols with electron-donating substituents is observed. The reaction shows a preference in selectivity and rate for iron(II) rather than iron(III) for the extradiol cleavage, which parallels the selectivity of

Inhibitor of Clostridium perfringens formed by heating sodium nitrite in a chemically defined medium.

An inhibitor of Clostridium perfringens formed when low levels of nitrite were autoclaved with a defined chemical medium. A systematic study of the medium revealed that only amino acids and mineral salts were involved in the production of this inhibitor, which was proven to be a toxic compound formed from cysteine, ferrous sulfate, and sodium nitrite. The inhibitor was compared to several known compounds. S-nitrosocysteine inhibited the test organism, but would not form in the test system in amounts large enough to explain the observed inhibition. Roussin red salt was unstable in the test syst

The potential of Angeli's salt to decrease nitric oxide scavenging by plasma hemoglobin.

Release of hemoglobin from the erythrocyte during intravascular hemolysis contributes to the pathology of a variety of diseased states. This effect is partially due to the enhanced ability of cell-free plasma hemoglobin, which is primarily found in the ferrous, oxygenated state, to scavenge nitric oxide. Oxidation of the cell-free hemoglobin to methemoglobin, which does not effectively scavenge nitric oxide, using inhaled nitric oxide has been shown to be effective in limiting pulmonary and systemic vasoconstriction. However, the ferric heme species may be reduced back to ferrous hemoglobin in

A Nonheme Iron(III) Superoxide Complex Leads to Sulfur Oxygenation.

A new alkylthiolate-ligated nonheme iron complex, FeII(BNPAMe2S)Br (1), is reported. Reaction of 1 with O2 at -40 °C, or reaction of the ferric form with O2•- at -80 °C, gives a rare iron(III)-superoxide intermediate, [FeIII(O2)(BNPAMe2S)]+ (2), characterized by UV-vis, 57Fe Mössbauer, ATR-FTIR, EPR, and CSIMS. Metastable 2 then converts to an S-oxygenated FeII(sulfinate) product via a sequential O atom transfer mechanism involving an iron-sulfenate intermediate. These results provide evidence for the feasibility of proposed intermediates in thiol dioxygenases.

Self-Organization of Iron Sulfide Nanoparticles into Complex Multicompartment Supraparticles.

Self-assembled compartments from nanoscale components are found in all life forms. Their characteristic dimensions are in 50-1000 nm scale, typically assembled from a variety of bioorganic "building blocks". Among the various functions that these mesoscale compartments carry out, protection of the content from the environment is central. Finding synthetic pathways to similarly complex and functional particles from technologically friendly inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is needed for a multitude of biomedical, biochemical, and biotechnological processes. Here, it is shown that FeS2 NPs stabilize

Direct Reduction of NO to N2O by a Mononuclear Nonheme Thiolate Ligated Iron(II) Complex via Formation of a Metastable {FeNO}7 Complex.

Addition of NO to a nonheme dithiolate-ligated iron(II) complex, FeII(Me3TACN)(S2SiMe2) (1), results in the generation of N2O. Low-temperature spectroscopic studies reveal a metastable six-coordinate {FeNO}7 intermediate (S = 3/2) that was trapped at -135 °C and was characterized by low-temperature UV-vis, resonance Raman, EPR, Mössbauer, XAS, and DFT studies. Thermal decay of the {FeNO}7 species leads to the evolution of N2O, providing a rare example of a mononuclear thiolate-ligated {FeNO}7 that mediates NO reduction to N2O without the requirement of any exogenous electron or proton sources.

Electron Correlation in the Iron(II) Porphyrin by Natural Orbital Functional Approximations.

The relative stability of the singlet, triplet, and quintet spin states of iron(II) porphyrin (FeP) represents a challenging problem for electronic structure methods. While it is currently accepted that the ground state is a triplet, multiconfigurational wave function-based methods predict a quintet, and density functional approximations vary between triplet and quintet states, leading to a prediction that highly depends on the features of the method employed. The recently proposed Global Natural Orbital Functional (GNOF) aims to provide a balanced treatment between static and dynamic correlat

Organic matter affects phosphorus recovery during vivianite crystallization.

Vivianite crystallization is a promising route for phosphorus (P) recovery from P-rich wastewater. However, organic matter (OM) in wastewater may influence vivianite formation. In this study, the effects of four representative OMs, glucose, bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA) and sodium alginate (SA), on P recovery by vivianite were investigated. The results showed that P recovery efficiency was inhibited by HA and SA, declining by 3.7% and 12.1% under HA (100 mg/L) and SA (800 mg/L), respectively. BSA, HA and SA affected the aggregated form of vivianite crystals. Vivianite particle si

Biosynthesis of vivianite from microbial extracellular electron transfer and environmental application.

Vivianite (Fe3(PO4)2·8H2O) is a common hydrous ferrous phosphate mineral which often occurs in reductive conditions, especially anoxic non-sulfide environment containing high concentrations of ferrous iron (Fe2+) and orthophosphate (PO43-). Vivianite is an important product of dissimilatory iron reduction and a promising route for phosphorus recovery from wastewater. Its formation is closely related to the extracellular electron transfer (EET), a key mechanism for microbial respiration and a crucial explanation for the reduction of metal oxides in soil and sediments. Despite of the natural ubi

Oxygen-driven shift from Pb(II) lattice incorporation to reversible surface complexation: Exploiting hydrothermal sludge DOM for high-purity vivianite recovery.

Recovering phosphorus from sewage sludge hydrolysate via vivianite crystallization is a promising route for resource recovery, yet Pb(II) enrichment can undermine product purity and stability. Here we reveal a ligand-directed mechanism by which sludge dissolved organic matter (DOM) regulates Pb(II) partitioning between mineral lattices and interfacial complexes. Increasing the hydrothermal temperature to 220 °C promoted the transformation of DOM toward oxygen-rich aromatic components, including highly oxidized carboxyl-rich alicyclic molecules and polyphenolic species, which preferentially bin

Vivianite-induced peroxymonosulfate activation for containment removal under dark conditions: Performance, mechanism and regeneration.

The performance and intrinsic mechanism of vivianite, a natural mineral containing structural Fe(II), for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutant degradation under dark conditions were comprehensively explored in this study. It was found that vivianite was able to efficiently activate PMS to degrade various pharmaceutical pollutants under dark conditions, in which the corresponding reaction rate constant of ciprofloxacin (CIP) degradation was 47- and 32-fold higher than that of magnetite and siderite, respectively. SO4·-, ·OH, Fe(IV) and electron-transfer processes were found in the v

Dynamics and Mechanisms of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) Sorption onto Green Rust Sulfate.

Batch kinetic experiments are combined with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to compare the sorption of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), and Cd(II) with sulfated green rust (GR) in anoxic pre-equilibrated suspensions at pH 8 over a timespan of 1 h to 1 week. The XAS data suggest that all five divalent metals coordinate at Fe(II) sites of the GR sorbent, whereas the batch results show that GR exhibits bimodal sorption behavior, with fast but limited uptake of Mn(II) and Cd(II) and much more extensive sorption of Co(II), Ni(II), and Zn(II) that continues throughout the entire experimental time

Phosphorus Competition in Bioinduced Vivianite Recovery from Wastewater.

Phosphorus undergoes a one-way flow from minerals to soil to water, which creates a phosphorus crisis as well as aquatic eutrophication. Dissimilatory metal reduction bacterial (DMRB)-induced vivianite recovery from wastewater is a promising route to solve these problems synthetically. In this study, phosphorus competition between biomass growth and bioinduced vivianite mineralization was investigated at the batch scale. Biomass growth leads to phosphorus utilization over vivianite mineralization. Geobacter was selected as the main functional microorganism and presented higher vivianite recove

P=N bond formation via incomplete N-atom transfer from a ferrous amide precursor.

Incomplete N-atom transfer from Fe to P is observed when the ferrous amide complex (PNP)Fe(dbabh) (PNP-=N[2-P(iPr)2-4-methylphenyl]2, dbabh=2,3:5,6-dibenzo-7-azabicyclo[2.2.1]hepta-2,5-diene), prepared from salt metathesis of (PNP)FeCl and Li(dbabh), is thermolyzed at 70 degrees C over 48 h in C6D6. Several plausible reaction pathways resulting from the transformation of (PNP)Fe(dbabh) are discussed, including the possibility of an Fe(IV) nitride as an intermediate.

Facet-dependent electron transfer induces distinct arsenic reallocations on hematite.

The interfacial electron transfer (ET) between electron shuttling compounds and iron (Fe) oxyhydroxides plays a crucial role in the reductive dissolution of Fe minerals and the fate of surface-bound arsenic (As). However, the impact of exposed facets of highly crystalline hematite on reductive dissolution and As immobilization is poorly understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the interfacial processes of the electron shuttling compound cysteine (Cys) on various facets of hematite and the reallocations of surface-bound As(III) or As(V) on the respective surfaces. Our results d
