Elizabethkingia Infections - An Important Emerging Cause of Sepsis and Meningitis in Neonates and Infants: Case Series from North Batinah Region, Oman, and literature review.

Elizabethkingia species, particularly E. anophelis and E. meningoseptica, are gram negative bacilli known to be associated with neonatal infections. Although these bacteria are rare, they are highly concerning pathogens associated with severe sepsis, bacteraemia and meningitis in neonates and immunocompromised individuals. Managing Elizabethkingia infections presents significant challenges because of their multidrug resistance, including resistance to most β-lactam agents. They have been implicated in both nosocomial and community outbreaks worldwide, often with high mortality rates. In Oman,

Computational characterization and analysis of molecular sequence data of Elizabethkingia meningoseptica.

OBJECTIVE: Elizabethkingia meningoseptica is a multidrug resistance strain which primarily causes meningitis in neonates and immunocompromised patients. Being a nosocomial infection causing agent, less information is available in literature, specifically, about its genomic makeup and associated features. An attempt is made to study them through bioinformatics tools with respect to compositions, embedded periodicities, open reading frames, origin of replication, phylogeny, orthologous gene clusters analysis and pathways. RESULTS: Complete DNA and protein sequence pertaining to E. meningoseptic

Awake VV-ECMO for severe pneumonia caused by Elizabethkingia anophelis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia anophelis is phenotypically similar to E. meningoseptica and is often misidentified by conventional methods, delaying appropriate therapy. Awake venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) avoids complications of deep sedation and mechanical ventilation, but its role in severe pulmonary infection with rare pathogens remains underexplored. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 62-year-old male with chronic hepatitis B who developed type I respiratory failure and septic shock unresponsive to conventional support. VV-ECMO was initiated on January 23, and awake E

Myroides odoratimimus soft tissue infection in an immunocompetent child following a pig bite: case report and literature review.

Members of the genus Myroides are aerobic Gram-negative bacteria that are common in environmental sources, but are not components of the normal human microflora. Myroides organisms behave as low-grade opportunistic pathogens, causing infections in severely immunocompromised patients and rarely, in immunocompetent hosts. A case of Myroides odoratimimus cellulitis following a pig bite in an immunocompetent child is presented, and the medical literature on Myroides spp. soft tissue infections is reviewed.

Immune Activation and Inflammatory Response Mediated by the NOD/Toll-like Receptor Signaling Pathway-The Potential Mechanism of Bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeiana) Meningitis Caused by Elizabethkingia miricola.

Elizabethkingia miricola is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that is highly pathogenic in both immunocompromised humans and animals. Once the disease occurs, treatment can be very difficult. Therefore, a deep understanding of the pathological mechanism of Elizabethkingia miricola is the key to the prevention and control of the disease. In this study, we isolated the pathogenic bacteria from bullfrogs with dark skin color, weak limbs, wryneck, and cataracts. Via subsequent morphological observations and a 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the pathogen was identified as Elizabethkingia miricola

Blood stream infection due to Franconibacter pulvaris in an immunocompetent patient: A rare occurrence.

Blood stream infection (BSI) due to Franconibacter pulvaris is quite rare in immunocompetent host. Here we report a 36-year-old male, case of acute necrotising pancreatitis, presenting as a rare occurrence of BSI caused by Franconibacter pulvaris. He was managed with intravenous antibiotics as per the sensitivity pattern, however, he succumbed to his illness. New multidrug-resistant strains of Enterobacterales in intensive care unit patients are a growing concern. A high index of suspicion with timely identification and appropriate treatment can improve the outcome.

Septicemia caused by an emerging pathogen, Elizabethkingia miricola, in a laboratory colony of African dwarf frogs (Hymenochirus curtipes).

An outbreak of morbidity and mortality in an African dwarf frog (Hymenochirus curtipes) colony was reported following arrival at an animal research facility. Animals were found dead on arrival or became moribund shortly thereafter, and additional animals showed clinical signs of lethargy, weight loss, and anorexia over the following 3 weeks. Externally, some affected animals presented with multifocal areas of hyperemia in the inguinal and axillary areas and on the limbs, and mottled tan discoloration along the ventral abdomen. Histologically, lesions were consistent with generalized septicemia

Identification of a mobilizable, multidrug-resistant genomic island in Myroides odoratimimus isolated from Tibetan pasture.

Strains of the environmental bacterium Myroides odoratimimus can cause human infections. However, treating M. odoratimimus infections can be difficult because of multidrug resistance in this organism. In this study, we isolated strain M. odoratimimus G13 from pastureland in Tibet, China. The minimum inhibitory concentration analysis suggested that strain G13 has resistance to multiple antibiotics, with an MIC for tetracycline of 168 mg/L. Whole-genome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis revealed that the genome of G13 was rich in virulence factor-encoding genes and antibiotic resistance gene

Identification of Elizabethkingia species by MALDI-TOF MS proteotyping.

UNLABELLED: Elizabethkingia species, isolated from clinical and environmental samples, are emerging opportunistic bacterial pathogens with a high mortality rate in clinical settings worldwide. Taxonomically, Elizabethkingia comprises seven species: E. anophelis, E. argenteiflava, E. bruuniana, E. meningoseptica, E. miricola, E. ursingii, and E. occulta. In this study, we identified useful biomarker proteins, including ribosomal L29, L30, S21, and the YtxH domain-containing proteins, for distinguishing Elizabethkingia species using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass

Candidate Animal Disease Model of Elizabethkingia Spp. Infection in Humans, Based on the Systematic Pathology and Oxidative Damage Caused by E. miricola in Pelophylax nigromaculatus.

Most species of the genus Elizabethkingia are pathogenic to humans and animals, most commonly causing meningitis. However, our understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms involved is poor and there have been few pathological studies of Elizabethkingia spp. in animals. To understand the host injury induced by Elizabethkingia spp., we established a model of E. miricola infection in the black-spotted frog (Pelophylax nigromaculatus). The systematic pathology in and oxidative damage in the infection model were investigated. Our results show that recently isolated E. miricola is a bacterium that mai

Mini review: New pathogen profiles: Elizabethkingia anophelis.

Within a little more than 5 years since its taxonomic description in 2011, from the midgut of mosquitoes, Elizabethkingia anophelis has emerged as an important causes of sepsis in adults and children and in cases of neonatal meningitis. At least 3 moderate- to large-scale outbreaks of disease have been caused by this bacterium, the largest 2 occurring in the Midwest United States in 2015-2016. Several studies suggest that E. anophelis, and not E. meningoseptica, is the predominant human pathogen of this genus; identification to species is difficult. Little is presently known regarding its epid
